This is Phyllis-Phyllis Cummins. Better hurry, Sue, Whataman and Superman are picking us up at eight. That's right. they're coming in the Rocket Ship. Guess what-oh! l'm so thrilled! They're taking us to their hldeout on Mt. Illohmet to see a telefuture program. What's telefuture? Oh, it's a machine G. W. Wilcox invented. lt projects onto a screen the images of people you know . . , shows what happens to them in the next decade. Superman has prom- ised to tune in on the '52 MCHS senior class. Isn't that something? Just think: we'll know what happens to all the kids when they graduate. Our Rocket Ship swished through the air and before you can say Johnny Del Kreuter iand we so love to say ith we were seated before the teleluture set. Superman turned a lot of dials and knobs and a picture flashed on the screen. It was-guess what? Hal Lee Rush still blowing a whistle! This time, however, he was refereeing a basket- ball game between two chimpanzee teams at the St. Louis Zoo. Henry Neicamp was coaching one team and Joe Pergande the other. Mooney Shaw was swaggering around in a turtle-neck sweater marked trainer. Neil Smith was off in one corner showing baby chimps how to shoot baskets, and Jane Smith was teaching two girl monkeys how to be cheerleaders. Say, whats this? A wrestling match . . . Peggy Bow- man i Miss Grunt l and Nadine Cagle t Miss Groan l are competing for the heavyweight championship of Massac County. Milledge Harmon is the promoter and Donald Chick is at the radio mike describing the big event. The sponsor is a champagne company, headed by Carol Sue Walker and Diane Nutty. Their product has a cute slogan: A 'hic' in every cup. The Royal theatre, it seems, has switched to live dramatic presentations. A play is in progress, starring Joyce Copeland as Minnie Ha Ha. the Indian squaw. A featured attraction is the Metrolettes, a popular quar- tette consisting of Ruby Jones, Alma Houston, Flora Neal and Clara Fitzpatrick. As the crowd left we saw the wealthy Mrs. Carl Fort. the former Carolyn Carroll, herding several little Forts toward an exit. Cleaning the box office windows was Merlene Kreuter, an usher, with her boss, Tom Fitch looking on and dodging an occasional stream of Windex. We now see the- White House, which at last has been moved to Metropolis. Neal Modglin, the new President. taking over Harry S. Truman's place is awarding the Congressional Medal of Honor to five-star General Billy tThe Kidi Williams, who led the l0th Division in a heroic charge that ended t.he war with Slabonia. With the gen- eral were his staff officers: Robert Anderson, Virgil Co- burn. Martin Sullivan. Jack James, Milledge Dieckman and Jackson Gilbert. Also present lat the general's re- questi were the following Wacs: Lois Teckenbrock, Janet Stokes, Gladys Bremer, Gloria Faughn and Verna Rose. There followed next a sort of newsreel. We saw radio songsters Kay Mittendorf and Joe Korte plugging Wrig- ley's Double-Bubble Gum . . . William Oliver playing basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters . . . Gene Miller as the second Charles Atlas . . . Janiece Corson as head of Boys' Town lbig boys, that isb . . . Robert Austin winning an award as the typical hen-peeked husband . . . Daisy Scurlock as the author of a best seller, Why Men Like Me . . . Harry McGhee as a prize-winning painter, mas- terpiece is Moonlight on the Lake tCity Lake that tsl and Betty Grimes as a famous hairdresser on Fifth Alley tNot Avenue!-her slogan: Dye, Dunk, and Dry 'Em. Walter Winchell, in his weekly newscast, said Miss Dorothy Laird uses Jergen's Lotion and advised his radio listeners that Gwendolyn Bormann is still the only girl in the U. S. who says, I don't know and I don't care to know. From Winchell we switched to a New York fashion show and saw Nancy Bumam modeling an atomic design bathing suit. The Commentator, Marie Bremer, pointed out that many old styles have been revived by Dori: Buldtman, who is now the wife of a millionaire playboy We were shown many beautiful dresses, all Doris Brown originals. Doris, it seems, has taken Cecil Chapman's place in fashion's spotlight. We next viewed a telefuture show titled Here's Looking at You. Jane Schneeman, the hostess, introduced a masked housewife who looked like Gravel Gertie. Beauty experts would take this frazzled housewife, Miss Schneeman explained, and turn her into a thing of beau- ty. In a moment our little housewife was back, unmasked. and she turned out to be Irene Butler. Irene, it developed, was the mother of six little girls, all named after the following classmates: lRuth Annl Huffman, twandal Kotter, tBettyi Sielbeck, tDoral Comer, tLolsl I-lorman and twandal Volle, all six former M. C. H. S. students now prominent in the movies. From this point we were whisked again to the sports world. The scene is a familiar one-Sportsman's Park, in St. Louis. A game is in progress between the Brown's and White Sox. Kenneth Searles and Johnnie Thomas are rival managers, and they are anything but buddies now. Bobby Jones is at bat for the Sox, and Charles Wells is playing second base for the Browns. Our picture fades out as Loren Wlndhorst, Brownie shortstop, catches an infield fly to end the inning. eniot J 'zofzgz-:cy The telefuture camera focuses for a moment on a section of the left tleld bleachers where a group of stud- ents from M. C. H. S. is huddled. They were brought to the game by James Shelton, head football coach. Among the students we see Bill Parmley who, apparently, is still trying to graduate from high school. We End ourselves now looking in on a meeting of the Business Women's Club. Calling the meeting to order is the club's president, Florence Meinders. The secretary. Betty Skees calls roll and flnds that high school teachers -Barbara Doyle, Geraldine Logeman--are absent twhat could they be doing?l In the back of the room the mayor's wife, Pat Teasley, and the dog catcher's wife, Geraldine Korte, were whisper- ing excitedly about Georgia Evers' latest escapade. Geor- gia, one of Metropolis' leading citizens, had hit the dog catcher with a broom when he attempted to take her pooch. Arrested by Paul McGinnis, the chief of police. she finally was freed after paying a S100 fine. Ah, here's a cozy scene-the interior of a business office. We see Charles Giltner and Clifford Kruger fthe big brassl talking over some kind of deal. Rosemary Har- ris, Clifford's secretary, is leaning on her typewriter and chatting with Jerry McBride and Oletha Kraper, the girls who married twin brothers and still can't tell them apart. In the conference room Dorothy Phillips and Rebecca Fuqua, who travel for Gilmer-Kruger Corporation, are listening earnestly to a beef from a couple of clients. Came then a series of scenes depicting a red hot politi- cal campaign, seemingly a primary. We know only that Lewis Shrum, Mlllege Bremer, Betty Riley and Beverly Rixie were all running for the office of state senator fthe many banners and placards told us that.J Active in the campaigning were both Elgie Rottmann and Barbara Williams. Superman yawned and asked Sue and me if we had seen enough. We agreed that we had and he turned off the telefuture machine. We all then climbed aboard the Rocket Ship and zoomed through space back to Metropolis. And that, guys and gals, is the story of what happened to the graduating class of '52! SCHOOLS ARE GOOD PROSPECTS The school market is well worth consideration-on the completion of the New .Junior high school. we are proud of the part we played, and want to thank that district for the privilege of serving you with the modern clean buckwheat stoker fuel for this lovely building their first heating season. This is new business and collectively represents con- siderable tonnage annually. The selection of buckwheat stoker by the boards of these various institutions is a further indication of the increasing interest in the knowledge of the value of buckwheat stoker fuel and the modern equipment available for its use. Fuel is a very important item to the average school heating plant. Up to a few years ago, wood was a favorite fuel. in all our country schools. The best grandfather ever had was a pot-bellied stove. But modern schools demand the higher comfort standards. The volume of business in the school is a good indicator of what is ahead. And the repeat orders among the schools in these areas certainly indicates customer satisfaction. CUSTOMERS LIKE PACKAGED PROCESSED ICE-NEW MARKETS FOR ICE A l'0Olll has been set aside in the plant for the sizing of ice. and a machine has been installed in this room for ice sizing. Customers headed for picnics buy a bag of crushed ice in preference to block ice, and this is another indication that proper packaging and availability of this premium-priced product will create a demand for it by the buying public. The ice industry still grows despite electric refrigeration. Increasingly wider ownership of automatic refrigerators hasn't chilled the ice industry. VVhile it has been losing some home-delivered sales. it has been increasing commercial sales for such purposes as truck icing, shipping perishables. Without artificially created ice, fresh vege- tables antl fruit would not be available in such a variety so frequently to so many people -08 percent of the perishable produce in this country is brought to the ultimate consumer under ice. ln fact. the national association of ice industries reports that ice sales are around 50,000,000 tons a year, compared to 25,000,000 tons in 1925.
