VALEDICTORY 1987 fj Keith Kerman Fellow students, distinguished guests, faculty members, parents and friends, As I address this last meeting of the Methuen High School Class of 1987, 1 think not only of our past but also of our future. Today signifies not only the end of our high school career, but also the sheltering of our youth. - Until now, we have had our teachers, guidance counselors, athletic coaches, and most importantly, our families to guide and protect us in our daily lives. Yet, as we now look forward to colleges, trade schools, or full-time employment, we must build upon the foundation of education which we received at Methuen High School and the values and lessons engendered by our families and friends and begin to carry the burdens and responsibilities of adulthood. Shortly, we will be receiving our diplomas, symbolizing the successful completion of our high school education. It is an accomplishment in which we can all take pride, and I ' m sure we are all thankful that it is finally here. Yet, no longer will our success be measured by the creativity of our excuses for not arriving to class on time or our ability to complete a homework assignment while eating a doughnut and driving to school. Each of us will soon be measured by others and by ourselves through our future successes, whether it be in the development of careers or the raising of families. Yet, how does one achieve success? If I knew the answer to this age old question, I ' d write a best-selling book and then I would be a success. I do know that success takes hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I also know that we all have the ability to succeed. Yet, why does it seem inevitable that some of us will succeed and others not? Perhaps, the answer can be found in the writings of Emily Dickinson. She writes: Thine enemy may -.be thyself. — Thine enemy may be thyself. Could it be that we, as individuals, act as our fiercest enemy toward future success? Could it be that we allow our fears, our inhibitions, and our weaknesses, to diminish our enthusiasm, dampen our spirit, and limit our efforts? Could it be that our fear of failure too often prevents us from attempting to succeed? Could it be that while others sacrifice for their future, we too often sacrifice our futures through attempts to experience momentary pleasure? Could it be that we too often blame others for our own shortcomings rather than having the courage to look to ourselves? Yes, thine enemy may indeed be thyself. Yet, only by recognizing and acknowledging the enemy within ourselves can we know in which direction to wield the sword and clear our path to the future. I ' d just like to end on a personal note. I am the last of 6 children in my family to graduate from Methuen High School. On behalf of my family and myself, we would like to thank publicly the teachers of the Methuen Public Schools, and in particular, the teachers of Methuen High School, for 23 years of dedicated, diligent and outstanding instruction and assistance. Farewell class of 1987. Good luck and thank you. ! 157 SHARING THE GIFT Members of the faculty, administration, parents, friends, and classmates — Welcome to the graduating ceremonies for the Methuen High School Class of 1987. When I first began thinking about topics for my address, I had some problems. I wasn ' t sure exactly what I wanted to say. I then thought about the different experiences I have had in high school and the things I felt that were most important to remember. I realized that it is not so much the events of these days that are important, but the days themselves. The times of high school are important. They are important because of what they bring — the time spent, the lessons learned. These are things which we must take with us into our future. The doors close behind us, we must use what we have learned to open new doors. It is important that we never take for granted the things we have been given — the gift of an education, memo- ries of happy times, and of opportunities for the future. These can never be taken from us. We must learn to use these gifts every day of our lives. It is not so important that we be great people, but rather that we be good people. We must share our education and our opportunities. We must be bold in reaching out to the people around us, to know their needs, and to use everything we have been given to respond to them. The fact remains that without the support of other people, not one of us would be standing here today. We must in turn support those who need our help. We must learn to be a class of givers — striving for excellence in whatever we may choose to do, not only for ourselves, but for the benefit of those around us. We must give something back to the environment that helped us grow to the point at which we now stand. And so we say good-bye to high school — and although it may seem as if this is the end of a period of happiness and growth in our lives, as the modern day philosopher Yogi Berra says — It ain ' t over ' til the fat lady sings. Jonathan Mulrooney Salutatorian — 1987 ■■w HONOR ESSAY Members of the -faculty, administration, parents honored guests, friends, fellow classmates: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once wrote: ?s of great men all remind us can make our lives sublime And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sand of times. Each member of the graduating class of 1987 has left behind some footprints during his or her time spent a Methuen High School. Along with the achievements we may have made as scholars, athletes, or leaders, all of us have left behind even deeper impressions on one another. The memories and friendships we leave each other have to be the most meaningful type- of foot- print. ever made in the sand. ?lieve that we have learned a great deal from our classmates, and we have taug )ne an- ?r many valuable lessons about life. Loyalty, consideration, and trust are only a few z manyjfine experiences that the members of this graduating class have shared. Ideally, tn strength of character and the capacity for caring that we have developed through ' our frien d lips will carry over into our dealings with other people in the future. In a society where so rm :Ji emphasis is placed in succeeding in the sense of one ' s occupation or earnings, we must not ' ose sight of the fact that the most important thing in life is to be truly happy. Happi- ness is not such a difficult goal to achieve; to be happy we must simply be willing and Aare our success and failures, disappointments and expectations with other peopk successful but lonely eliminates a great part of joy. The friendships we have made here at Methuen High School have been some of the mos (enjoyable and rewarding aspects of the past four years. In a sense, today, as we graduate, we are [not exchanging farewells, but rather we are leaving behind the impressions, or, if you will, t [footprints that we have made on one another throughout the years. phank you.
