Let her words be a reminder to those of you who curse the world . . . Live your life to the fullest and get done what you want ... to get done before it ' s too late. Always thank God for everything. Everything you have, thank Him for. 60 ? i M Director ' s Memo 220 ACADEMIC INTERNSHIP Levels % (Grades 11,12) 2 semester course 1 credit The Academic Internship Program believes that the community as well as the school should be involved in the education of its youth by providing real life learning situations. It believes that there are other legitimate places to learn, in addition to the formal classroom. Students, on release time, are individually placed in community agencies, with regard to their future occupational and educational goals. . . . Someone once asked Sigmund Freud what he thought a normal person should be able to do well. Expecting a lengthy reply, the person was surprised by Freud ' s concise answer: To love and to work. Many of the students who participated in the Internship this year, especially those who worked with young children, the elderly, and the handicapped, learned valuable lessons in both these areas that will last them a lifetime. I think it takes courage for these students to leave the relative safety of Methuen High for the uncertainty of hospitals, nursing homes, and day care centers out there in the ' real world ' . I know hey are to be commended for the love and committment they willingly gave. Larry Salmansohn Seniors โ€” Beth Baker, Wayne Barbin, Cathy Bell, Cheryl Bis- tany, Dana Bradbury, Diane Boragine, Donna Boragine, Debbie Brooks, Rose Chretien, Cindy Gagnon, Helen Gagnon, Jane Garabedian, Ros- anne Gingras, Lisa Grasso, Barbara Guzuski, Beth Hamel, Kathy Jones, Kelli King, Susan Leger, Kathy McDermott, Maureen Menihane, Cheryl Moriarty, Jo Ann Pappalardo, Kerri Ricci, Steve Stanganelli, Kathy Timony, Debbie Wilcock, Stephanie McCarthy, Sheilagh McGreevy, Donna Stott 61 Excuses, Excuses Excuses, excuses . . . the art of avoidance and deception; our weapons in the war against work and responsibility. Where would we be without them? Where have we been with them? (Probably in Mr. Nick ' s office) We have all found the need to use them at one time or another to ' ' rationally ' ' explain our tardiness or our incom- plete (i.e. never attempted) assignments to our classroom tyrants. For those of you who suffer pangs of guilt, don ' t think of them ' as lies but as mere elaborations of the truth. To those who say that our creativity has been stifled we offer the following Academy Award winning examples of (adolescent) imagination: I can ' t go to detention because . . . I have an appointment with my hairdresser. I have to work and my job is important My mother is getting married. I have to help my mother take the dog to the vet. 1 have no ride home and I can ' t walk in the snow with these heels. ... I have a dental appointment at 4:00 p.m. and have to go right home to brush my teeth. . . . I ' m allergic to Mr. Noiseux. . . . My dog is about to have puppies and I have to be there, just in case. . . . The gypsy moth caterpillars are defoliating my trees and 1 have to go home to spray them. . . . My parakeet is sick and needs me. . . . I ' m moving this afternoon and I want to say goodbye to my friends. ... I ' m getting ready for a Falkland Islands victory party. I don ' t have my homework because . . . My dog ate it. It ' s in my locker and my locker ' s jammed. I was absent. 1 had to go on a field trip. I had to go to a yearbook meeting. I had to go to Guidance. I had to go to the office. I had to go to the nurse. The homework mugger attacked me. This was one of the most well-balanced teams Methuen has ever fielded. The team was capably led by Tri-Captains Cindy Gagnon, Kathy McDermott, and Sheila ' Pepin. 105 Splish . The Girls ' Swim team finished third in the North Con- ference League. Five girls qualified for the Eastern Massachusetts Championship in Medford. The team completed its season with an impressive record of 8- 3. 106 . . . Splash! This season, the Boys ' Swim team belonged to the Commonwealth Conference. Although this year ' s team was small, all members exhibited great spirit and motiva- tion. They look forward to an even more successful sea- son next year when they will be in the Merrimack Valley Conference. 107 โ–  ย ' Courtm ' In Style 109 Hit ... or Miss The Girls ' Varsity Basketball team finished its season with a successful 8-7 record. Out- standing players included seniors such as Karyn Perusse, Most Valuable Player, and Kathy McDermott, Most Improved Player. 110 Ill Hotshots The Ice Hockey team played exciting hockey this past sea- son with Doug Boyle, Art Broadhurst, and Steve Boudreau being selected to the All Conference team. The highlight of the season was the game with Sir Wilfred Laurier High School from Ontario, Canada which ended with an 8-5 win. 112 113 In Search Of The Perfect 10 i i Eight Is Enough! The girls ' gymnastic team had an outstanding season with fine per- formances from seniors Cathy How- shan, Jane Sapia, and Karla Pattavi- na. Once again, Karla was a stand- out in the Merrimack Valley Confer- ence. 115 Mat-mates 1 B .- t k B ft frJL. _ l The varsity wrestling team finished with a 7-7-1 record. The schedule was the toughest ever and included some of the top teams in New England. Four wrestlers qualified for the state meet. 116 We Go I n Snow Senior members included Sean Bradley, Michael Gerardi, Tom Farrell, Donna Poulin, Debbie Brooks, Kelly Keough, Laureen Kinsella, David Catania, and Mike Torres. Despite a relatively small number of participants, this year ' s ski team was characterized by a number of outstand- ing individual performances. David Catania and Tom Farrell for the boys, and Laureen Kinsella, Debbie Brooks, and Donna Poulin for the girls, were outstanding. โ–  117 The Pacers Where ' s the bacon? League Meet champs. Led by captains Frank Lemieux, Steve Avede- sian, John Palazzo, and Dan Carpenito. 119 Ranger Fever โ€” Catch It After a poor start, the varsity baseball team finished strong winning 7 of its last 9 games including the last 5 in a row to finish with a 9-7 record. Paul Szostak led the team in hitting with a .395 batting average. Dave Manning went 4 and to lead the pitching staff, and Doug Boyle, who hit .333 but .400 in the clutch, was chosen the team ' s M.V.P. This season provided us with two state champions, Dave Colizzi in the shotput and Mark Murray in the discus. The team finished third in the M.V.C., fourth in Class B, fourth in the All-State, and second in State Relays. A great group of returning juniors will provide the nucleus of, hopefully, a championship team. The seniors included: co- captains Mark Murray and Frank Lemieux, John Palazzo, Jim Gregg, Tim Nartiff, Steve Avedesion, and Tom Grondine. 123 124 Net-wits 125 What a Racket The 1982 Season was one of rebuilding for the Methuen High Team. After opening with an upset win over Chelmsford, the Rang- ers lost a number of close matches including two to the State Class B tourna- ment winner Austin Prep. am 126 Up to Par This year ' s golf team won the M.V.C. Championship. The team was the first one in the conference to be completely undefeated throughout the season. Let ' s Hear It! This spirited squad included seniors Susan White, Kelly Keough.
