In the course of our four years here, some of us felt the school should have taken on a more personal, lived-in look. The bathrooms and lockers, once unmarred, soon displayed catchy sayings and masterpieces of art. (We always knew there was talent in this class.) Thanks to our resident pyromaniac, the North House bathrooms were remodeled — finally. But back in 1 976, as naive and innocent freshmen, we were guided to our classes (usually the wrong ones) by the trusted upperclassmen. We soon learned our way around the school (with no help from them), but we weren ' t as naive as they thought. We finally realized that being freshmen was the perfect excuse for arriving late to classes. Some of us, especially Chris Haigh and Michelle Catania, became quite proficient in the art of being tardy to the point of absenteeism. Our class officers at the time were the following: Karen Murad, Paula Hynes, and Pegi Lever. With one year behind us, we adapted to the roll of sophomores very easily. Although we could no longer be classified as wet behind the ears, John Hadley proved to be wet all over after an unexpected shower in Biology lab. With the help of Dale Dimaggio, Paula Hynes, Gael Heggarty, and Pegi Lever, our class officers, we received our rings. Feeling as if we could do no wrong, we flaunted our new rings from Josten ' s under the nose of every underclassman we could find. Sophomore year sped by, and we were soon juniors. Though we wished to prove ourselves as upperclassmen, we were forced to be classified as underclassmen for the powderpuff football game — which we lost (We would have won if it weren ' t for the referees). We started to make regular trips to guidance as we looked ahead to our college years. SAT ' s, college fairs, and catalogue collecting was soon upon us. Our two formal events of the year, organized by our class officers Dale Dimaggio, John Fitzpatrick, Karen Waks and Pegi Lever, were the Holly Ball and The Junior Semi-Formal at DiBurro ' s in Bradford. Speaking of formal events, all the junior Honor Society inductees of the 1978-79 school year fondly remember how they all changed their names to Diane Moore for one day, the day of induction. Stevens Studio stopped by that year to snap pictures of our lovely faces for the yearbook, and they nearly succeeded. Then the day finally came, the day we walked through the doors of Methuen High School as seniors. But as we walked through those doors, we acquired more than just the title of seniors, we acquired a fatal and fun disease called senioritis. We were eager to find out just how much fun we could have and just how much we could get away with. Surely we all remember our favorite cheerleaders at the powderpuff football game, Mike DeChane, Jay Guzaj, Tim Haley, Ronnie Masucci, Mike Lorenzo, Bill Barry, Dave Marchand (who did some advertising for Burger King), John Poublon, Mark Machera, and Doug Moore to name a few. Our Football Team with its four captains Glenn Saba, Andy Baker, Tony Masucci, and Mike Carney was strongly supported by devoted fans who followed the team in many-a-car caravans. Shawn Morrissey and Chris Murray became very handy with a spray can (though they failed spelling) and Ronnie Masucci took a quickie course in turkey sitting at football games. Speaking of birds, Mr. Russell must have been thrilled to have an attentive student in his class the day the seagull made its visit, and we are sure the science department was also thrilled when they found some of their students showed an interest in nuclear power. By the way, complete plans to the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant may be obtained from Mike Carney, Bill Barry, Mark Machera, or Chris Murray who acquired them from first 180 4 V ■■■hand experience. To get back to birds, Gina Berthiaume, Janet Delucca, and Arthur Hagopian went to Cape Cod one school day in search of seagulls (probably the relatives of the ones that attended Mr. Russell ' s class) and to their surprise, they bumped into Methuen High School ' s Student Senate. They were almost bumped out of Methuen High School. The year flew by and before we knew it, the weather was getting warmer. Beach day became an often-used phrase and what better to do at the beach than play volleyball. Lisa DiPietro, Tom Beaulieu, and John Fitzpatrick would like to thank the Methuen High School Physical Education Department for the use of their volleyball poles. Kittery, Maine was also a favorite vacation spot. I hear the postcards from there are very nice. Not only has this year produced many great vacations, but it has also produced some great sports teams. The soccer team led by Dan Caraccio, Doug Moore, Dave Gemollaro, and Dave Collopy produced a successful season although Mr. Sorter learned how cold one ' s ears could get without any hair to cover them. The track teams had many stars during the course of the year, such as Mike DeChane, Andy Baker, Tim Haley, Cheryl Grasso, Faith Kenyon, and Donna Carbonneau. The team was also known for their trips to Dartmouth and New York where each team member was said to make friends quickly. Jeff Desrosiers became the constant companion to a bucket, every time his face turned green. Unlike 1978, when snow was in abundance, the ski team had one of its slower seasons. They did, however, enjoy every minute running the stairs. Thanks to the help of seniors like Debbie Brearly, Nancy Szostak, Ro Catteau, Nancy Rochefort and Sandy Ward, girl ' s basketball, softball, and field hockey had terrific seasons and captured many titles. But the year ' s activities were not yet over. The not-soon-to-be-outdone Senior Class Play, The Beverly Hillbillies made its debut in mid-March 1980. The play, starring Dave Collopy, Kathy Kenney, Matt Foderaro, and Jude Jennings was a big success. And Next time Big Jethro reaches into a paper shopping bag, he ' ll be more careful about what he pulls out. Mary Beth Manning, Kathi Welch, and Pegi Lever also made their presence known on the stage in more ways than one, Mary Beth with her bathing suit, Kathi with her voice, and Pegi with her ostrich feathers. Arthur Hagopian, Kathi Leger, Ralph Lorenza and Debbie Contarino also contributed great performances and their excellent humor to make the play a success. The parties afterwards were quite a hit, too, even if some of us had to sit under the table. And Arthur and Jay danced the last waltz divinely together during the play party Saturday night at Diburro ' s Restaurant. As the close of our senior year is now upon us, we have celebrated with parties, beach days, banquets, and awards and, of course, the Senior Prom, thanks to John Fitzpatrick, Scott Jenkins, Sandy Marcinkevich, and Jim Buco. Everyone who attended will not easily forget how Mary Jane Jennings and Arthur Hagopian sang their way into the hearts of millions that night. The Sheraton Rolling Green provided a pleasant atmosphere in which we could enjoy Labonza, Messenger, and the evening, but the Showcase Cinema, and the beach provided a better atmosphere in which we could enjoy the morning. With June 8th close at our heels, we would like to wish all of you a happy graduation, and we hope that the memories you have gathered at Methuen High School are ones you will cherish forever And that ' s the way it was.
