Text from Pages 1 - 224 of the 1978 volume:

Dreams are the stuff of which decisions a made It is in our imagination and our dreams that we become who we are Our image of ourselves Our dreams of who we want to be I have a dream . . . We who are young have wild dreams, beautiful dreams, impossible dreams But something happens - Where do our dreams go? Where do our images of ourselves as beautiful and brave go? When do we decide to let others tell us who we shall be? Where do we learn to believe that we are nobody, we are worthless? But always we admire the dreamers Those who refuse to let their dreams go The poets, the artists, the adventurers, the statesmen, The great teachers, the inventors, the lovers The real men and women Who know they are equal to their dreams. All the seniors leave behind a great tradition of spirit, leadership and winning for all the future teams at Methuen. The Girls Varsity Track Team finished the 1978 Spring season with the finest dual meet record ever recorded by the girls: 6-2. The team, still mainly competing with underclass girls, succeeded in placing five girls in the Class B State Meet. Methuen girls did extremely well in the League meet with Cheryl Grasso setting a meet record of 5 ' 1 in the high jump, Faith Kenyoh setting a league record in the discus, 110 ' 9V2 and Monique Wheeler and Maureen Castles winning the shot put and long jump respectively. Donna Kendall was the only girl on the team to place in the All-State Meet finishing fifth in the 880 with a excellent time of 2:18.6. Donna qualified as an alternate to the New England girls meet. Signed and attended to this 31st day of May, 1978. Gina DeMonaco Carlene Graham CLASS PROPHECY Good evening ladies and gentlemen. From the crowd here, I can see that a lot of our class of 78 has made it to our tenth reunion. I ' m sure most of you are dying to find out what has happened to us over the years and we will try to tell you as much as we have found out about every- body. But first, I ' d like to tell you of those who, unfortu- nately, couldn ' t make it tonight. First there is Bill Drury. Bill is studying aquatic life in Bermuda and sent us his regrets telling us he had some late tests he had to make on a beautiful specimen he found lying on the beach. Alison Flemings, head coach of the 1988 Olympic track team, has a meet in East Germany tomorrow and couldn ' t make it. to Mr. Klimas and Mr. Fuller which brings the total to 473 coaches now. He was supposed to be here, but from what I ' ve heard, he has gotten himself and boys lost running around the block. The new Arabian leader, Sheik Jimmy Abdul Ventre, will be here a little later on. He sent us a telegram telling us he will fly in from his palace in Arabia as soon as he takes care of his fifty-girl harem. Marty Mason is off to Hollywood as the aging John Wayne ' s protege. Keith Ardizzone and Patty Augeri will be here as soon as they find a baby-sitter with enough patience to take care of their 26 children. Terry Oleferowicz and Michele Lavoie are in Paris now designing what they call their line of Conehead Origi- nals . Irene Bagdoian is in jail because of much more than a few slanderous remarks toward the famed political leader Richard Lacroix. Frank Riley is throwing smoke for the Cincinatti Reds tonight in a game at the Astrodome. Don Desantis, our most talkative boy of 78, is teaching classes at Harvard University on how to stop talking in ten short, easy lessons. One of his students phones us to say that their first class had been going on for 75 hours and they didn ' t think Professor Don would be through lecturing on time. After that it is said that he must visit Judy L ' ltalian in the hospital. It seems that Judy, the pro- fessor ' s personal dental hygenist had a slight accident concerning her hands while trying to clean the professor ' s teeth. Ricky Cameron has since become assistant track coach Erin Cronin enjoyed being in the Senior Class Play of 78 so much that she has changed her name to Mary Campbell, thinks she is a high school teacher, thinks she is the president of the United States, and insists that Sheik Jimmy Abdul Ventre is her son. Those who wish to contact Miss Cronin, alias Miss Campbell may call on her at her permanent residence at Danvers. They all leave their condolences for not being here and hope they can make it next time. We do have a couple of celebrities with us tonight. Jim Driscoll has recently become host of the Tonight Show after the late Johnny whatever-his-name-was passed away, and has graciously taken time out to see his classmates of ten years ago. And, Steve Collopy, the fam- ous impressionist from Vegas, has also given up some of his precious time to be with us. Steve is not married now, but has just had his twentieth divorce. Karen Hailson is now the owner of The Gap with Donna Raymond as her executive secretary. Many of our classmates have become teachers in these ten years. Geralyn Hart is a kindergarten teacher; Janet Paris is teaching the deaf in elementary school; Cheryl Bowden has been teaching art in the famous art schools of Europe; and Diane Schruender is a first grade teacher in Kentucky. Greg Favreau is the father of seven pygmy children. Marie Bocsi is an interior decorator and has been work- ing on Burt Reynolds ' bedroom for three years. The hours can be rough, the room still looks the same, but Marie says the fringe benefits are well worth everything. Mark Labreque has become a world-renowned psychologist and has almost cured his own unique psychosis. Donna Mellor is married to a professional baseball player and is not too concerned about playing the field. Brian Daley is a staff sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Judy Dallon is a professional ski bum and is keeping herself busy flirting with all the cute ski instructors. Actor dancer Steve D ' Orto has been credited with hav- ing just finishing a movie called Friday Night Chills. He and Dickie Neel, co-stars of the movie, are in process of traveling the world ' s discotecques trying to catch up on all the latest moves. Jane Tuminowski, our own world- traveling photographer, is following Dickie and Steve, helping them catch up on the moves. Margaret Jacobs has won the Nobel Prize of Medicine for discovering the cure to the common cold. As Mr. David Isadore lies quietly in his room at the condemned Woodland Nursing Home, Pam St. Louis and Karen Townsend have taken over the Methuen High School Band and are state champs. MaryAnne Frechette and Billy Gould own and operate their own dancing school. Famed attorney Cheryl A. Manning hasn ' t quite made it to her position along with F. Lee Bailey yet. However, she seems quite satisfied in filling the role as head coach of the boys ' football and track teams at her old Almama- ter. Paul O ' Donnell is a truant officer for the Methuen School System. Colleen Cumerford is the proprietress of the Deceased Methuen Rangers Funeral Home. Frank Ferrara is the smiling undertaker at the funeral home. Rosine Ace Hatem owns her own karate studio in California. On her days off from the karate studio, she works for Universal Studios as a stuntwoman. Mike Ward is living quite happily in his beach house in Long Beach California, working hard, but playing a lot harder. Mary Campbell and Karen Fitzpatrick are in business together as fashion merchandisers to Saks Fifth. Rhonda Eddy and Sheila Larson are both special ed. teachers and are currently trying to rehabilitate Bob Parker and Jay O ' Hanian. Bob McEneaney has been working at the Anhauser Busch Brewery as a taste inspector forNthe past ten years. After a hard days work, he is driven home by his private chauffeur Frank Cochrane. John Joyal is a multi-millionaire in the Amway Corpo- ration. His Executive secretaries are Kathy Donahue, Josephine Golio, Marie Koralishn, and Janice Pellitier. Gina Bonanno as you may well remember as our sweet little old lady in the play is now dancing her way to fame and fortune. When asked for her secret of looking so young, she said she takes her Geritol every day. Paula Hadley is married to an oil Company President and is the first musical special needs teacher. She has her own combination music school and physical therapy center. Sue Hammer is an accountant and Debbie Lawrence is a graphic designer. Bill Arcidiacono has gotten into ladies hosery and says If you ' ve seen one pair, you ' ve seen them all. The new hospital which has been opened last year in the valley, was dedicated to the boys of the valley, who are responsible for much of the hospital ' s business. We have many of our classmates working at the hospital. De- nise Beliveau and Sandy Lafrenier are the top physical therapists, Mary Imielkowski is chief X-ray technician, Mary Korizis is executive secretary, and Faith Sunderland and Maureen Jackson are head nurses. By the way, when Maureen isn ' t attending to the needs of her patients, she is home caring for husband Matt Gordon ' s needs. Sandy DiFrancesco and Tony Piro have become perma- nent residents of our famous McDonalds. They have learned to live with all the messes, the hassles, the fights, the spitballs, the stinkbombs, and the locked bathrooms. Before we leave, I have a few announcements to make. First, I would like to say that professional bookie, Jeff Getchell, better known as Jimmy the Getch , would like to have a few of his closest friends over for a little get- together later on tonight. He contemplated using the Goodrich Blimp to announce this party, but quickly dropped the idea when he remembered police officers Tony Piro, Rich Kenney, and Bob Kamal. He was quoted as saying after all, you remember what happened the last time the police were invited. His mother heartily agreed. And the last thing we would like to say is that all of you who skipped school and went to the beach on Friday, May 12 of 1978, are asked to remain here for a few mi- nutes. Mr. Nicholson has taken time out from his duties at Maine University to clear up this little matter which has been bothering him for the past ten years. 188 CLASS HISTORY 1978 As our days at Methuen Junior came to and end, we looked forward to starting our sophomore year in the new high school. Although 1975 got off to a slow start, we quickly became familiar with our new surroundings. The largeness of the school separated many of us from our friends, yet the open concept allowed us to make new friends easily. Although we were constantly ridiculed by the upperclassmen, we felt proud that we were finally part of the high school scene. Once the thrill of the new high school passed, we finally got down to business and elected our class officers. Most of our sports teams fared well and with the help of our many young athletes, Rick Cameron, Jim Ventre, Greg Favoreau, Frank Riley, Mike Hovnanian, Rosine Hatem, Beth Donovan and Maureen Castles, looked promising for our future years. It seemed as though the new sound of the fire alarms intrigued many students who took every available opportunity to make sure they were in operating condition, even if it meant pulling them during final exams. With the ordering of class rings and the prospect of becoming upperclassmen, our sophomore year came to a close. At last we were juniors! Upperclassmen! This was proven by our high school rings, which were expertly flaunted towards the under classmen. At the sound of the first time tone we found ourselves bestowed with a new principal. It seems as though Mr. Timothy held a special place in his heart for our class and had followed us to the new building. Along with our new principal came the election of our class officers, who were: President — Donna Mellor, Vice-President — Lisa Griskevich, Secretary — Brenda Lee and Treasurer — Beth Donovan. Our sports teams continued to progress with a championship in Cross Country helped by our juniors, Rich Cameron and Mike Kowal, and a championship in tennis aided by junior, Jean Begley. Other sports such as hockey and volleyball qualified for states. During this year many of our cafeteria athletes displayed their talent in the art of food fighting. Little did we know that this practice was to be halted as extra troops from our Nation ' s Civil Defense were called in. Our Junior year was to be graced with the presence of two outstanding figures. One of which was Lord Methuen, and the other Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. The realization of the end of our junior year came about with the ordering of our class pictures. In the anticipation of becoming seniors, it didn ' t seem possible that the year had passed and our ambitions were becoming a reality. In the fall of 77 W e returned to Methuen High as seniors. The year started quickly with the election of class officers who were once again: President — Donna Mellor, Vice-President — Lisa Griskevitch, Secretary — Brenda Lee, Treasurer — Beth Donovan. With the help of Sandy DiFrancesco, Rhonda Eddy, Carlene Graham, Debbie Wrobel and Gerri Hart, — our Superb Powder-Puff Football team was not to be beaten. This was because of the tremendous sideline support given by those outstanding cheerleaders, namely: Jim Ventre, Bob McEaney, Bill Gould and Steve D ' Orto. Because many of our cheerleaders wore skirts on this day, it turned out to be quite a hairy situation. The game came to a close with the crowning of Steve Collopy as Football King. For the second consecutive year seniors continued to enjoy special privileges, and surprisingly enough they lasted throughout the year. 189 There were many social events that occurred during senior year, one of which was the Army Navy Band — Free Fall, which by popular demand was hired to play at our prom. Another was the excellent performance of the Pocket Mime, whose skits amazed and intrigued many of us. One of our most successful events of the year, was our senior class play, Who ' s That Lady in the President ' s Bed, which was considered to be one of the best plays ever presented. The success of the play can be attributed to the hard work of the entire cast. Some standouts were Erin Cronin, Jim Ventre, Marty Mason, Sue Jackson, Donna Gilbert, Gina Bonanno, Jimmy Driscoll, Lynn Vaiknoras, Eric Ehramjian and Kory Sirmaian. Another enjoyable performance in which many of our classmates displayed talent was the Dance Club ' s presentation of Boogie Night. Some of our better dancers were Carlene Graham, Dickie Neil, Erin Cronin, Steve D ' Orto and Jim Driscoll. In the sports scene Methuen ' s teams had begun to reach their potential. Despite the efforts of many of our seniors, the football team had not done as well as planned. The cross-country team aided by Rick Cameron, Mike Kowal and the many other seniors had a victorious season. With the help of Marcia Wermers, Sue Raitt and Gina Demonaco, the Field Hockey team was able to have a winning season. The soccer team did well with seniors, John Freeman, Steve Collopy and Mike Scammons. The volleyball team with help from Maureen Castles and Lee Delaney became MVC Co-Champs for the first time. The boys ' basketball team was helped by Greg Favoreau, Bill Arcidiacono and Jeff Getchell, while the girls ' basketball team had a successful season with Beth Donovan and Sandy DeFranciso helping them. The Ice Hockey team with Mike Hovnanian, Jim Cassidy, and Jeff Bellorado, skated their way through a good season. The boys ' Gymnastics team aided by Paul Chenard and Marty Mason did very well. The girls ' Gymnastic team had a championship season. The boys ' winter track team aided equally well with a championship helped by Rick Rumore, Mike Ward, Bill Drury and Jeff Saffie. The girls ' Winter Track team with help from Ace Hatem, Alison Fleming, and Gina DeMonaco had an excellent season. With the help from Bob Kamal and Mark Davidson the wrestling team did well. The boys ' spring Track team captured the Title of Division B co-champs with help from Jim Ventre, Mark Grasso, Mike Hovnanian, Rick Rumore, Sam Panto, and the Mullins brothers. The baseball team became MVC champs with much help from Frank Riley, Frank Slater, Mike Scammons, and Jim Cassidy. The girls ' Tennis Team fared well and became MVC co-champs with Jean Begley, Sheila Larson helping out. The boys ' Tennis team did well with help from Matt Gordon. Our Methuen High School Band had four good years and topped it off this year with a 1st place win in Washington, and also placed 3rd in the State Competition. Some of the seniors that helped out are: Eric Ehramjian, Roy Schwartzenburg, Carol Palumbo, Kathy Sullivan, Wendy Garabidian, Willard Farrel, Sue Hammer, Lynn Vaiknoras, Judy Hajjar, and Lynn Hajjar. With the arrival of spring, came our teachers worst enemy, the onset of senioritis. Thi s contagious disease was not arrested until classes finally ended on May 19. Our spring season, however, was officially opened in the traditional manner once again. At last it may be revealed that the two shining examples that frequent the McDonald area are none other than Jim Ventre and Bob McEaney. These unselfish young men have given us a view of their best attributes in the most unusual and interesting ways. Many events that occurred during these four years have been omitted (TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT), but we know they have not been forgotten; for as our high school years come to a close, the memories we have created and shared will live forever. 190 FROM OUR FRIENDS BEST WISHES, MUSKET ' S SANDWICH SHOP BEST WISHES TO THE CLASS OF 78, CAPT.
