Erickson, Mr. Skillings, members of the Faculty, members of the School Committee, parents, rela- tives, and friends, we, the members of the class of 1953, cordially welcome you to the Forty-Ninth Class Day Kxercises of the Edward F. Searles High School. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy the program we are about to present. As we have the distinction of being the last high school graduating class to tread upon these grounds, it is our honor and privilege to voice the last farewell. For many years we have looked forward to this day of happiness and achievement, but now that the zenith of our high school career has been attained, we are doubtful as to what the ensuing years hold in store for all of us. Guided by our motto, By Faith and Courage, and with the assistance of our Lord, we will strive to make the best of our opportunities and thereby bring full credit to Edward F. Searles High School. Now I join with the rest of the graduates in thanking everyone for the assistance and encouragement which they have freely given us. A sincere thank you and heart felt good-bye to you, our teachers, to you, our fellow students, and to you, the ivy covered walls of Edward F. Searles High School. —ROBERT BAILLARGEON 46 19 5 3 CLASS HISTORY Q ODAY, on our Class Day, as we look forward to the future, it is 2£jJL only proper that we spend a few moments in reflecting upon the SaigSJ outstanding events of the past three years, here at Searles High Sdhool. In October of 1950, we held an election of unrealized im- portance; that is, we chose our most stable students to lead us as class officers and members of the Student Council. Our President was Robert Baillargeon; Vice President was Sally Lowe,; Secretary, Joyce Goudy; Treasurer, Carolyn Assaf ; and on the Student Council were Dorothy Giles and Paul Consentino. Following the election, almost as an installation of these officers, was a Sophomore reception, at which we were greeted and welcomed most heartily by the Senior President, Timothy O ' Neal. Making peace with the tradition that we Sophomores were babies, Robert Baillargeon proudly accepted a Yo-Yo. Soon afterward, as the result of a broken boiler, we were rewarded with an unexpected vacation. I believe that this was to begin our cam L paign for a badly needed new High School. At an open house, one eve- ning, all parents and interested towns people were invited to inspect our poor building conditions, and finally, on March 21st, the appropriation for the new school was passed. During this year, the three class parties, which had previously been annual events, were combined into one Talent Night — a definite success. In April, the Student Council received attractive pins, the giving of which was another first for the school. The Girls ' Athletic Association, unable to hold its usual exhibition, sponsored a dance with the well known disc-jockey, Bob Clayton. As the school year came to a close, our deserving classmate, Audrey Pickles, was presented with the Good Citizenship Medal by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Thereupon, as we watched the Seniors file past, we climbed one rung of the ladder, before leaving our established schedule for our summer vacation. With the gaiety of the beautiful autumn foliage which surrounds Searles High School, we students returned to classes to renew our search for knowledge in September of 1951. The only change in our class offic- ers was the position of Vice President, given to Carol Dennis, and we elected to the Student Council Norman Waites, Audrey Pickles and Rob- ert Clarke. The next event of exceptional importance to us all was the selection of our class rings by the ring committee. The monogram on these gold rings is a tower, superimposed by an M. This tower symbolizes the benefaction of the late Edward F. Searles. I know that most of us have worn these rings with a feeling of deep pride and distinction. 47 M H S The social whirl went on. First came the Military Ball, at which our girls were extremely proud of their fellow class-mates, so changed in their impressive Cadet uniforms. The grand march was led by Nicholas Buglione and Joan Ilaheeh, and Company I), headed by Donald Schmott- lach, won the prize drill. Next was the Hand Dance, at which our hand and majorettes gave their usual line performance. The remainder of our Junior year passed very much the same as our Sophomore year and Audrey Pickles once more received the Good Citi- zenship Medal. It was when graduation day came for the class of ' 52, that we, the class of ' 53, suddenly realized our position. We climbed the next rung of our success ladder and left forever the security of being Juniors for the honor of heing Seniors! In September of our senior year, we took over the school with a proprietary air. This year the group of class officers remained unaltered, hut we added both Joan Petrillo and Robert Hamblet to Student Council. The year seems to have passed without our realizing it. First, we welcomed the new sophomores at the Sophomore Reception, at which everyone was was startled by a black-out. The crowd was calmly irum- aged, however, by Philip Bamford, to whom we owe our thanks. Then, as the year book cmmittee began its tremendous task, the class voted that Loring Studio be engaged to take all the pictures. It w r as not long before members of the class began to think of more serious problems. Individuals sought guidance from the faculty in re- gard to the future. In two of the numerous elections which fdled the year, we chose Philip Bamford to represent us at Good Government Day in Boston, and Joan Petrillo to receive the Good Citizenship Medal. And in this, our last year of high school, as in all others, our classv mates earned our respect in their excellent display of sportsmanship on football, baseball, basketball, track, and golf teams. For the remainder of the year, the Talent Night, Military Ball, Girls ' A.A. and much anticipated, beautiful Senior Prom all passed smoothly. We hold the distinction of being the last class to graduate from Searles High School; and as we look back upon our three years here, we regard them as a brief, but happy interlude, crowded with recollections to be forever cherished. Now, we must look forward with an active faith to a promising future. — GAYLE WHITE 49 1 9 5 3 CLASS PROPHECY SETTING: Nominating Convention, New York City, N.Y. TIME: 1972 David: Excuse me, but aren ' t you Georgians Kachadorian ? Georgiana: Why, yes. . . .David Penkus! What are you doing here in New York? I thought you were in South America with the engineering firm of William Atkinson and Richard Allen. David: Yes, I ' m representing the company at the Convention. It ' s been quite a campaign for the nomination. The National Chairman, Ray Corey, has met with considerable difficulty trying to keep peace be- tween the businessmen ' s candidate, Robert Hamblet, managed by his manager, John Vartanian, and the favorite of the Barber ' s Union, Ercole Sideri, with his campaign manager, Ken Wilson. Georgiana: It was necessary to assign military escorts to both candi- dates. Clinton Hoffman, Steve Young, Dick Kelleher and Jack Donovan are serving as guards. David: They ' ve all been doing an enviable job. Have you seen any celebrities here at the convention? Patricia Derochers, the world-famous pop singer, and Marilyn Clark, who is touring the country doing concerts, are among the crowd. Georgiana: Isn ' t that Marlene Thornton, the noted authority on Japan, with her personal secretary, Harriet Paris, over there? David: Yes, and there ' s the newly-appointed Justice of the Supreme Court, Calvin Downs. I understand Gerry Lucchesi, Shirley Simonian and Joan Higton are working in the Justice Department, also. Georgiana: That ' s what I read in the Methuen Times. Have you seen a recent copy? Toby Gaunt has made quite a name for himself as the editor-in-chief. Barbara Moore is the fashion consultant. Around the Town is a popular column with Joan Jukins ' by-line. Gayle White, the society editor, interviewed the participants of the Teacher of the Year contest. Among those entered are Nancy Espinola, who is the head of the English department at Central High School. Grace Ataide, well known for her theories on teaching children, Joan Miele, the foremost authority in the country on the effects of acids and bases, Beatrice DiLavore, wide- ly known for her interpretations of modern jazz, and Jane Bistany, who has just written a book entitled The Importance of Hand Gestures in Public Speaking. David: The paper has certainly been making great strides. Its ace reporters, Dave Weinhold and Leo Potvin, are here covering the conven- tion. Dave was telling me about last Saturday ' s game. Coach Weepy Bamford ' s best player, Dick Stabile, was hurt, and the team hasn ' t won a game this season. The President of the Alumni Club, Arthur Clement, and Dean Charles Booth have been threatening to strip Bamford of his letter. 49 MHS Georgiana: Poor Coach. I saw the team down at Rickey Wholey ' s and Henry Fink ' s ice cream stand, The Greasy Scoop. They ' re spon- soring a contestant in the Miss Ice ( ' ream Cone competition this year. .loan Walsh has won a complete outfit from Josie Fisichella ' s Fifth Av- enue Slioppe for her nomination. Patricia McConaghy and Grace Antoian are the chief designers and Frances Botonnelli and Nancy Guglielmino are salesmanagers. David: I saw lovely actress Patricia Bartose, and the noted operatic star. Virginia Baldwin, leaving there yesterday. They ' re appearing on the same hill as Arthur Wermer ' s Symphony Five, with Jim Had field and Warren Bedard on drums, Jim Karos with his hot trumpet, and Dav- id Kalian and his blaring cornet, and featuring Dominic Norcia with his accordian. Georgiana: Arne ' t they wonderful! Shirley Calderone is singing with them now. Her latest record, Burning Lips or Kiss of Fire, sold over a million copies. David: Many stars have been appearing at Benny Giordano ' s Club 60 and Dick Conterelli ' s Beno night club. Bev. Christison is working as hat-check girl in Dick ' s club. Georgiana: So I heard when I was home last month. I saw Kay Man- ning and Peg Bizkallah at Francis Ward ' s amusement park. Kay has nine children now, and Peg has four. They were giving the childr en a ride on Dick LaPlante ' s miniature jalopies. Dick: Oh! There ' s General Charles Collins of the United States Marines. And isn ' t that Terry Iannalfo, who was chosen Miss Marine Corps of 72? Georgiana: Yes, Terry was always an ardent Marine hooster. And have you seen the Wave representative to the Convention, Eileen Robi- chaud and Joanna Garfii? David: I met them at the luncheon held in honor of the Ace jet pilot, Bob Baillargeon. Bussell Peate and Francis Cook were awarded service medals also by Chief of Police, Albert Medauer. City Treasurer, Carolyn Assaf, delivered a speech and presented the key to the city to the Air Force men. Georgiana: Wasn ' t the luncheon held at Arline Benjamin ' s home styled restaurant? Maureen Clark, Palma Bonanno and Lorraine Du- bois are working as hostesses there, you know. David: Yes, and Angie Ventimiglia is the cashier. The chief delegate from Canada, Larry Beauchesne, and his private secretary, Lorraine Bel- iveau were their, also. After the luncheon we went to see the ' Sportsi- men ' s Show Georgiana: It must have been wonderful. I understand the All-Star football player, Jim Stabile, and the great basketball star, Frank Bobi- chaud, were in the show along with the famous women ' s basketball coach Beverly Illingsworth and Olympic swimming star Lorraine Mansur. 50 19 5 3 David: Yes, and Joe Madden, who recently set a new record for run- ning the mile, was there sharing the spotlight with the twenty game win- ner of the Wet Sox, Pete Graham. Georgiana: Did you see the delegates to the convention from the Hair Stylists Union, Helen Narushef, Garole Booth and Helen Furnari? David: Yes, and I met their publicity agent, Martin Busta. With him were his corresponding secretaries, Ruth Topping, Doris Zenker, Eliza- heth Saab, and Georgina Burne. Georgiana: Really, here in the convention hall I noticed Peg Hepworth at tliQ telephone switchboard. The noted woman lawyer, Bertha Wein- hold, was trying to get a call into the office of the Methuen General Hos- pital. Mary Jane Jaskal, Angie Gissara and Dorine Lumb are working in the office, and Louise Dalldorf is the comptometer reader. Have you seen the new hospital? David: No, hut I heard the Byron Kennard, Winford Nowell Enter- prises drew up the plans and Norman Waites Construction Company won the building bid. Georgiana: Yes, a fine staff headed by director Robert True is doing a splendid job. Alan Jordan is the head pharmacist and Kathryn Espin- ola and Gerry Ferlito are the dieticians Heading the Social Service De- partment of the hospital is Marlene Golobski. David: Audrey Pickles, Joan Petrillo and Marilyn Dearden are on Pediatrics. And the Director of the Nursing School is JoAnne Maloney. Carolyn Call and Carol Dennis are nursing private patients. Peg Schaffer is the psysiotherapist. Gerogiana: And Joyce Goudy is doing dental surgery with one of the foremost dentists in the country. David: You ' re still nursing, aren ' t you? Georgiana: Yes. As a matter of fact, I just finished a course in Eu- rope. While I was in Paris I attended the annual fashion show sponsored by Terri creations. Modeling for Terri Terrazano are lovely Edith Culley and Jane Garfi. Barbara Voigt and Gerry Lees did a beautiful job as fashion co-ordinators for the show. David: Did you fiy back on the Demarco Airlines? Some of Jim ' s fine crew are Gabby Tutunjian, Speedy Kilcoyne, Casanova Rudis and Flash Marshman. Eddy Dowd abandoned the stage to accept the po- sition as President of the Airlines. Georgiana: Yes, the hostesses on the flight were Marilyn DiGiovanni and Evelyn Kurkjian They looked so smart in their uniforms. June Hajjar planned my trip. She ' s a reservationist assisted by three toprank- ing secretaries, Stacia Bogalski, Margaret Rickley and Shirley DeLucca. David: And Phil Picanso and Ed Zilinsky head the ground crew. Did you notice the ad in last week ' s paper fo ' Dick Martin ' s garage? He specializes in jalopies. Searles High School, the ivy that we plant today has a particularly significant meaning for all of us. Not only does it symholize our graduation; it also evokes the happy memories of the many class day exercises which have heen held by hundreds of students down through the years. i All walks of life have been enriched by the contributions of Searles ' graduates. The family, the community, the state, and the nation reflect the influence of our school. Science, government, labor, husiness, indus- try, religion, the liheral arts, the armed forces — every field of endeavor has felt the impress of our graduates. .... In this very audience gathered here today are many alumni. We in- vite them to renew their enthusiasm and to dedicate themselves once again to the ideals of their youth. Join us, if you will, in this, our last trihute to our high school. As for us, we few, we happy few, we band of brothers, the me ' m- hers of the forty-eighth class, it is true that we represent hut a small num- ber of men and women. Yet we hope that as the ivy flourishes, so will we grow in wisdom and courage. May the knowledge which we have! acquired here bear fruitful evidence of the teachings we have received. For as the ivy lends beauty and distinction to these walls, so may our performance in our chosen work bring credit and luster to the name of our school. Fellow graduates, let us accept with pride the challenge which pre- sents itself to us. The possibility of a better world lies within us. The human spirit, aided by divine guidance, is still the great force which can perform miracles. The past is gone. Today is ours. Yes, let us enjoy it with all the exuberance and laughter of youth. May we remember, how- ever, that the accomplishment of our task exacts generosity, humility, and perseverance. Edward F. Searles High School, we are grateful to you for the truths which you have imparted to us during our stay within your walls. We know that you have sought to bestow that precious spiritual and intel- lectual legacy which alone makes man free. You have urged us to real- ize that truth is the supreme need of mankind. In so doing, you have pointed the way to right and noble living. For in truth will be found the remedy for the ills which afflict the individual as well as the nations of the world. Edward F.
