Crane The second 21ll1lll2ll Lectureshipl' series to be sponsored jointly by the M-K School, Ro- chester Methodist Hospital, and The First Methodist Church brought Dr. Henry Hitt Crane, pastor emeritus of the Central Methodist Church of Detroit, Michigan and one of the strongest voices in Christianity, to Rochester for 4 days d11ring Religious Emphasis VVeek, April 12-15 It is the hope of the combined Religious Emphasis Committee, representing the three sponsoring gro11ps, that some means of financing this type of lectureship will evolve and that an- nually one of the great leaders in religion today can be bro11ght to this community, where leaders of so many fields come to share their beliefs and services. He preceeded his lectureship at the school by preaching at both Sunday morning services of the First Methodist Church on the theme, A Matter of Life and Death,', and that evening spoke on world peace. D11ring the time he was here he gave 3 lectures at the school, the titles were VVhy Christ? , The Christian Style , and The Pur- pose and Power of God . He was also available during the day for counseling with students, and each noon had lunch with one of several of the student organizations, The Drawsheet , Stu- dent Co11nsel, and the Bible Study Group. Fol- lowing his last lecture, he was guest at a recep- tion. Dr. Crane was born in Danville, Illinois. He is a graduate of the Boston Latin School, the oldest ed11cational instit11tion in America. He took his under-graduate work at Harvard, and holds honorary doctorial degrees from De Pauw University, Florida Southern College, Wfesleyan and Boston Universities. During his academic career, he was inter- ested in various extra-curricular activities, was leader of a glee cl11b and dramatic society, man- ager of the football team, member of a tennis team, and an All-American basketball guard. He is interested in all phases of aviation and is a licensed private pilot. 42 Dr. Crane has held 3 pastorates, Central Methodist Church, Malden, Massach11setts, Elm Park Methodist Ch11rch, Scranton, Pennsyl- vania, and Central Methodist Church, Detroit, Michigan, from which he retired last year. He is welll known for his work on the college cam- DLISGS of the country, having lect11red at over 200 different ones, averaging better than 1. address a day. During VVorld Wfar I, he worked as a Y.M.C.A. secretary and gained such intimate knowledge of the fury and futility of war that he has become famed as one of the foremost world leaders in the peace movement. Dr. Crane has traveled around the world, studying internally the conditions in the coun- tries and talking with many people in all walks of life. He collaborated with his uncle, the late Dr. Frank Crane, in writing a book and more than 150 articles on Christianity and world peace. On his father's side of the family, he comes from 5 generations of Methodist ministers, and his son, Frank Crane II, is also a Methodist minister. Throughout his visit, Dr. Crane presented a fresh approach to the problems of life, living and the world. Most challenging and thought- producing were his lectures. VVhat we yet do not know and may never know is the contri- bution of the 1959 lectureship. But at least we will all remember that Dr. Crane's ideas were noticed. Along with her letter Mrs. Knowles enclosed an article which appeared in the Yakota, japan, Air Force Base newspaper, describing an R.N. The purpose of the club is To serve as a social and professional organization, to provide contacts with other Registered Nurses, and a means of bringing them current information about nursing and medicine. The article contained a picture of Mrs. Knowles, showing her conferring with one of the A.F.B. staff members while she was doing special duty nursing. She also served as Yakota's Red Cross chairman and received her Red Cross Nurse pin, membership, and service bar. Many of the nurses in the club volunteer their professional services whenever needed in a hospital or in com- munity health programs.
