C8611 One of the social events of the commence- ment week was the tea, given at the Mayo Foun- dation House, on May 17, for the graduating classes of the Methodist-Kahler and St. Marys Schools of Nursing. At the door each guest was presented with a rose. Everyone was invited to wander through this historic house and the beautiful gardens. Tea was served in Balfour Hall. The famous stained glass window, in which the salient events in the history of medi- cine are presented, was particularly interesting. The tea in the quiet, sedate atmosphere of the Mayo Foundation House, with its historical significance, will forever linger in the minds of the 1955 seniors as one of the memorable events of our commencement. Marilyn Erickson Class of '55 ecceptiioin On the afternoon of commencement day, May 21, a reception was given in honor of the graduating class, their families and friends, by the Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing. The reception was held in the parlors of the First Methodist Church. Bouquets of spring flowers were used for decorating the coffee and punch tables. Approximately 425 people attended. With full co-operation from the weatherman the Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing celebrated its thirty-fourth annual commencement on May 21. For the first time in the history of the school the pins and diplomas carried our new name, The Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing. The processional, Pomp and Ciircumstancef' played by Mr. Harold Sweitzer, organist of the liirst Methodist Church, signaled the beginning of this ceremony. The seniors, in their new graduation uniforms, made a dignified picture as they marched down the aisles and took their places. Mr. llarold C Mickey, administrator of the Rochester Methodist Hospital presided and the Reverend Raymond B. Spurlock, chaplain of the Rochester Methodist Hospital, gave the invocation. The Choir, directed by Mr. Harold Cooke, sang two selections Recessional by lie lioven, with Patricia Issendorf, '57, as the soloist and You'll Never Walk Alone by Rodgers and l-lammerstein. Richard Bestor, '57, was the accompanist. The commencement address was delivered by IJr. Phillip S. Hench, Senior Consultant of a Section of Medicine ol the Mayo Clinic and a Nobel Prize winner in 1950. His address was thought provoking and filled with tributes to nurses. The candidates for diplomas were presented by Miss Gilberta Durland, director of the school, and Mr. li. l-l. Weld, member of the Section of Administration of the Mayo Clinic and a memher ol the board of directors of the Rochester Methodist Hospital, awarded the diplomas. The presentation of awards was made by Dr. 0. T. Clagett, a member of the Section of Surgery of the Mayo Clinic. Recipients of the ul. H. Kahler Memorial Scholarships were Miss Clarine Grefe, Truman, Minnesota and Miss Marjorie Minger, Fayette, Iowa. Miss liloise Schuler. Granada, Minnesota and Miss Marjorie Helmen, Milaca, Minnesota, were chosen as alternates. The Edith Graham Mayo Award was presented to Miss Gayle Gunder- son, Twin Lakes, Minnesota. The Mayo Association Graduate Nurse Awards for 1954 and 1055 were presented to Miss Joanne Skinner, '54, VVells, Minnesota, assistant night supervisor at the Rochester Methodist Hospital, and Miss Eleanor Smith, '36, Decorah Iowa associate director of the Methodist-liahler School of Nursing. i i The recessional, March Pontificalen by Lemmens, completed the program. Vlliilace lliiaaili Bacealaureate The baccalaureate service for the Class of 1955 was held at the First Methodist Church on May 15. The 98 seniors, attired in their white uniforms and blue and red capes, participated in the processional. Dr. Olin D. jackson led the order of worship, and Mr. Harold I. Sweitzer was the organist. Miss Patricia Issendorf, a freshman student, sang the beautiful St. Francis Prayer by H. Gifford Bull. The Reverend Truman XV. Potter, Pastor of Central Methodist Church, XVinona, delivered the baccalaureate sermon. He challenged the members ofthe graduating class to join the ranks of outstanding people who, having also begun their life's work at this age, had the ambition, determination and spiritual strength to Go the Second Mile. The recessional to Triumphal March , by Tschaikowsky, was a fitting finale to an inspiring evening of worship. jean INillms Class of '55 all-S lliibainqiuiet aindl Vllqlheateir' party The I-S banquet was held on May 14, in the Royal Coach Room of the Kahler Hotel. The theme of the banquet was in keeping with the colonial design of the room and the decora- tions accented the colonial atmosphere. On the wall directly behind the speaker's table was a golden royal coach, carrying a roll call of the senior class, with the class adviser sitting in the driver's seatg the coach was drawn by six White horses whose names were those of the class officers. Miss Wlinnifred Huff presided as toastmis- tress for the banquet. Miss Pauline Knopp, president of the junior class, gave the formal welcome. Miss JoAnn Carr, president of the senior class, gave the response. Miss Gilberta Durland presented a few comments on the Na- tional League for Nursing convention which she had attended the previous week. The principal speaker of the evening was Dr. Robert Brandenburg, cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic. In addition to several very hum- orous anecdotes he stressed that kindness and thoughtfulness to patients are still two of the prime factors for success in nursing. An original resume of the seniors' activities and life during the past 3 years, written by Miss joann Freese, was read by Miss Marilyn XN7ick- ler. The musical portion of the program con- sisted of group singing led by Miss Prudence johnson and Mr. Harold Cooke. After the banquet the guests were taken to the Rochester Civic Theater where they were entertained at a dress rehearsal of the play Three Little Angels presented by the Little Theater Group of Rochester. L Wfayne Kreykes of Sheldon Iowa, a junior at the Method- ist-Kahler School of Nursing, was e.ected to the office of treasurer for the National Stu- dent Nurses' Association at the annual convention in St. Louis last May. Mr. Kreykes also is serving as treasurer of the Sixth Dis- trict Minnesota Student Nurs- es Association, and he was a delegate to the State conven- 7 tion held in Duluth last March. Before coming to Methodist-Kahler he served in the armed forces for 2 years as a medical technician. For 14 months he was with the 171st Station Evacuation Hospital in Korea. The National Student Nurses' Association is a federation of state and territorial student- nurse associations. The purpose of this organ- ization is to provide a closer bond and a more unified spirit among student nurses through dis- trict, state and national activities. This organ- ization is also designed to acquaint students with the graduate professional nursing organizations and to prepare them for active participation as graduates in these organizations.
