VV. Harrington Retired On July 3, 1954, Dr. Stewart VV. Harrington, head of a section of surgery at the Mayo Clinic for 34 years and professor of surgery in the Mayo Foundation since 1936 retired from clinic prac- tice. Dr. Harrington came to Rochester in No- vember 1914, and became a fellow in surgery in the Mayo Foundation. In 1920, he became head of a section of surgery. Since 1925 he has devoted his attention to surgery of the thorax, and in this field he attained international recog- nition. He has contributed extensively to the literature in this field. He also has gained eminence for his operative treatment of diseases of the breast and lungs. He is a member of many national and international medical and surgical organizations. He is a charter member of the American Board of Surgery, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Southern Minnesota Medical Association, Minnesota State Medical Association, American Medical Association, served as president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, is a member of the American Surgical Association, Western Surgical Association, Southern Surgical Association, International Society of Surgery, Alumni Association of the Mayo Foundation, Pan Pacific Surgical Association, member of the Founders Group of the Board of Thoracic Surgery, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, academic fratern- ity, Society of Sigma Xi and the Phi Rho Sigma professional medical fraternity. During his years at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Harrington has been teacher, surgeon and friend to hundreds of Kahler nurses. The Kahler alumni who attended his classes will remember with esteem, with genuine affection, as they read this brief summary. The Link here adds its tribute, too. Miss Bremness at present is Superintendent of the Glenwood Community Hospital, Glenwood, Minnesota. Kalhller Graduate Receives Sclhollarslhiip Miss Harriet Gleason, '47, resigned from her position at the Clinic Health Service last August to attend Hartwick College, Oneonta, New York this year. Miss Gleason received a scholarship from the college and has been enrolled in a program leading to a degree of Science in Nursing. llaiittlle Links Miss Lois Bluemn, '52, is working as an office nurse for a ear, nose and throat specialist at the Western Clinic in Midland, Texas. Miss Joyce Siems, '53, Miss Doris Fiegel, '53 and Miss Donna Artese, '51, are working nights at the Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, and are attending San Diego State College. Mrs. Laurabel Reeve Haglund, '45, is supervisor of a post anesthetic unit in Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Miss Eva Mae Knight, '52, has been doing industrial nursing at a box factory in jacksonville, Florida. Mrs. Marjorie Hodorff Larsen, '48, is enrolled in the School of Public Health at the University of Minne- esota. Mrs. A. J. Aubuchon Ullelva Shanks, '45D is working as a nurse assistant to the surgical staff at Carle Memorial Foundation at Urbana, Illinois. Florence Ignatuck, '53, and Shirley Madsen, '53, are both working at Billings Hospital, University of Chicago. First Lt. Olive Palmer, '49, of Cando, North Dakota, made the Korean tour to army and air force installa- tions as companion and nurse to Mrs. joe Dimaggio Cnee Marilyn Monroeb. The newspaper item showed Lt. Palmer instructing Mrs. Dimaggio in the proper use of an oxygen mask aboard a C-54 Skymaster plane. Lt. Palmer described Mrs. Dimaggio as a very sweet and unassuming person. Donnabelle Casey, '46, has accepted a position as occupa- tional therapist with the California Elks Association at Lancaster, California. Miss Casey will operate a cerebral palsy mobile unit. The purpose of the mobile unit program is to give aid to cerebral palsied children and to educate and assist the parents to help these children. The mobile units consist of a physical and occupational therapist, each therapist is equipped with a station wagon stocked with all the necessary supplies. Miss Casey received her certificate in occupa- tional therapy from the University of Southern Cali- fornia. She has also attended Iowa State Teachers College, the St. Louis University and received her B. S. degree in nursing from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Three Kahler graduates received the degree of Bachelor of Science in nursing education last June from the University of Minnesota. They are Ruth Bushee, '48, Florence Schubert, '45, and Ruth Ekola, '51. The Division of Nursing Education of Indiana University informed us that last june Miss Ruth Erickson, '34, received the Bachelor of Science degree in education with a major in Nursing Education.
