The 91 seniors and the faculty participated in the processional. Dr. Olin D. Jackson of the First Methodist Church led the Order of Worship and Mr. Harold Sweitzer was the organist. Mr. Charles Hill sang a tenor solo, If With All Your Hearts, from Mendelssohn. Bishop Stanley D. Coors of St. Paul delivered the baccalaureate sermon, and a respectful silence pervaded the sanctuary as Bishop Coors said, May these young people be ever mindful and proud of their chosen profession, for their field is truly C1od's Work. As the organ swelled to the notes of March Religioso by Gounod, the class and faculty recessed, enriched by the hour of united Worship. Patricia Rekstad Class of 1954 ,lvi-ICCll'lIllCCDlI clLii3JliCB UCCCCIHLSJICUJJIILS USG, One of the highlights of the commencement Week was the tea, given at the Mayo Foundation House, on Thursday afternoon, May 27, for the graduating classes and Faculty of the Methodist- Kahler and St. Mary's Schools of Nursing. On entrance to the home each student Was presented With a rose. For many of us it Was the first and probably the last time we Will have the honor of visiting the original home of Dr. William Mayo. J aaa P5012 On Saturday afternoon, May 29, the mem- bers of the graduating class, their relatives and friends were the honored guests of the Rochester Methodist Hospital at a reception held in the parlors of the First Methodist Church. Bouquets of lilacs and tulips decorated the coffee and punch tables. Approximately 400 people attended.

The seniors had awaited this particular exciting evening, May 29, for a long time. They would be graduating! This was the thirty-third annual commencement of the school- the first, under our new name, The Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing, and the last in which the diplomas would read The Kahler Hospitals School of Nursing! At 8:15 o'clock that Saturday evening the proud yet solemn seniors processed down the aisles of the Central School auditorium to the strains of Pomp and Circumstanceu played on the organ by Mr. Harold Sweitzer, organist of the First Methodist Church. Mr. Roy Watson, Jr., a member of the advisory committee of the school, presided. Dr. Olin D. jackson gave the invocation. The Methodist-Kahler choir under the direction of Mr. Harold Cooke sang Grant Me True Courage by Bach and America Gur Heritage by Steele. Dr. john J. Pemberton, emeritus member of the Section of Surgery of the Mayo Clinic, gave the commencement address. He outlined for the class the differences between wisdom and knowledge and stated that education never stops with a diploma. He urged the graduates to learn about fields of work other than nursing and hoped that they would each practice and enjoy their professional work to the fullest extent. Miss Gilberta Durland, director of the school, presented the candidates for grad- uation to Mr. E. H. Weld, a member of the Board of Directors of the Rochester Methodist Hospital, who awarded the diplomas. The announcement and presentation of the awards was made by Dr. C. W. Mayo. Recipients of the J. H. Kahler Memorial Scholarships were Miss janet Rice of Slayton, Minnesota, and Miss Carolyn Swenson of Winthrop, Minnesota. Miss Lenora Simpson, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Miss Wilma Haarsma, Maurice, Iowa, were the alternates. The Edith Graham Mayo Award, was presented to Miss Lenora Simpson. The Mayo Association Graduate Nurse Award was deferred this year. The commencement closed with the singing of the Kahler Alma Mater. The recessional was the Triumphal March by Wachs. ihlpink ,ffl m lllnniior' :f Senior' Banquet Alumni Dinner And The Rochester Country Club was the scene of the annual junior-Senior banquet and prom on May 21. The large dining room of the Country Club was beautifully decorated to carry out the theme Moonlight and Roses. The walls were covered with brick-wall paper and climbing roses, which were set aglow by the large full moon overhead. Miss Margie Kiser, presided as toastmis- tress. Miss jean Wilms, president of the junior class, gave the formal welcome and Miss Betty Graff, president of the senior class, gave the response. Miss Gilberta Durland, director of the school, congratulated the senior class on its achievements and encouraged the juniors to keep sight of their goals. The musical portion of the program consisted of a vocal duet by Miss Audrey Whitney and Betty Krafft ac- companied by Miss Joanna Ely. The highlight of the banquet was the humorous yet inspiring talk given by Dr. J. L. Emmett, guest speaker. His talk was centered around the nurse and the uniform. The theme for the banquet this centennial year was Put On Your Old Gray Bonnet. Miss Helen Popovich, '53, served as toast- mistress. Mrs. Edward Brackenbury CDonna Ihrke, '42j, president of the Alumni Association, gave the official welcome and introduced Mrs. L. L. Bronson QHelen Guyer, '47D, the newly elected president, to the group. The musical part of the program consisted of two vocal solos by janet Klindt, and a piano solo by Audrey Whitney, both freshmen students in the school. ' The main address was given by Mr. Harold C. Mickey, administrator of the Rochester Methodist Hospital. He presented an historical account of the reorganization of our hospitals and school and gave a sketch of the future plans for these institutions. Greetings and reports were given from the three reuinion classes. Mrs. William Cfreaber QLouise Pribbenowj, Tuscon, Arizona, spoke for the class of 19449 Mrs. Raymond Schroeder CMargaret Hedgesj, Rochester, for the class of 1934, and Mrs. M. B. Schomburg CMildred Wattsj, Rochester, for the class of 1924. Each reunion class was honored by the presence of its class advisor. The three advisors were Miss Lulu Saunders, 19243 Mrs. Walter Hogenson Cjeanette Bjorgo, '28j, 19345 and Mrs. Frederick Bynes QHazel De Jongl, 1944. The seniors of the class of 1954 and their escorts were invited to attend the formal dance.
