Ugg Sixfg biabciab dfffinnsaofa :Student Jvuuss, cgaaociaiion Lozganizsa Since March 16, 1948, Minnesota student nurses have been organized on a state level. At that time the main purpose of the association was to stimulate interest among student nurses in the organizations of the professional graduate nurse and to prepare the student for active participation in these organizations. The pur- pose has extended with the growth of the organ- ization and one of the primary purposes now of the Minnesota Student Nursing Association is to encourage and assist districts and schools in the formation of local student associations. The years 1953 and 1954 marked another milestone for M S N A when the Sixth District Minnesota Student Nurses Association was formed in Rochester. The members are students from the Methodist-Kahler and St. Mary's Schools of Nursing and affiliates from the Roches- ter State Hospital. Advisors to the Sixth District Minnesota Student Nurses Association are Miss jo Anne Ripple, Nursing Education Supervisor at Rochester State Hospital, Miss Myrl Peterson, instructor at Methodist-Kahler School, and Mrs. William Leiferman, instructor at St. Mary's School of Nursing. It was late in 1953 when the students from the two schools in Rochester met together and discussed the formation of a local branch of the M S N A. At this meeting Mary Hotger from Methodist-Kahler School was elected as temp- orary chairman. Assisting as members of the organizing committee were Wilma Haarsma and Maureen Reinken of Methodist-Kahler and Rita Berg and Donna Swartz of St. Mary's. After this first meeting many small soap box sessions were held in all the dormitories explaining the purposes and benefits of a student organization on the district level. In February, 1954, the Sixth District Minne- sota Student Nurses Association was officially born. The constitution and by-laws were pre- sented and adopted and the following officers from Methodist-Kahler School were elected: Carolyn Swenson, president, Gordon Eng, first vice-president, Darlene Granberg Husband, sec- retaryg Gerald Tegen, treasurerg and Maureen Reinken, member of executive council. One month after becoming officially organ- ized the Sixth District Minnesota Student Nurses Association was host for the semiannual Minnesota Student Nurses Association. The newly formed district also sent two delegates to Chicago to the second annual convention of the National Student Nurses Association held during the week of April 26 in conjunction with the convention of the American Nurses Association. The delegates were Gerald Tegen of Methodist-Kahlerand MariettaShevlon of St. Mary's School of Nursing. We who are seniors are proud of the fact that we assisted in laying the foundation for the Sixth District Minnesota Student Nurses Association and we wish to extend our best wishes for future success to the M S N A.
