GEJIIIIIQIIIQ lRllE5GlIllIllRllEBS Miss Mary Gill, R.N., who retired from Desk F-1 at the Mayo Clinic in March, 1948, has given us permission to share with our readers the fol- lowing significant information which has a great deal of meaning and is of interest to all Kahler graduates. Miss Gill was grad- uated from the nurs- ing school at St. Joseph's in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1905. After managing a hos- pital near Hinckley, Minnesota, she came to Rochester and was supervisor of nurses at the Chute Hospital, Cnow Parkside Hotelj for five years. In 1906 she accepted a posi- tion as the first nurse MARY J' GH-L at the Colonial Hotel- Hospital for convalescent patients. A year later when the Colonial was expanded and began to function exclusively as a hospital, Miss Gill be- came the superintendent of nurses. An article in the june issue of The Link, 1925, written by Lyla Olson and Roy VVatson Sr., and entitled History of the Kahler School of Nurs- ing described Miss Gill as one of the key people who had a part in the founding of the school. We quote as follows: At the outbreak of the VVorld VVar I., a great many of the Colonial nurses enlisted in govern- ment service. In fact the nurses throughout the land rallied to the country's call, making it difficult to secure nurses to take the places they had left in the hospitals. It was at this time that Dr. M. S. Henderson of the Mayo Clinic, Chief of Staff of the Colonial Hospital, and Miss Mary Gill, R.N., Superintendent of Nurses at the Colonial, recommended the establishment of a Training School to meet the emergency. The recommendation was accepted and the school was started under the name of the Colonial Training School. The first class was made up of thirty-five who entered for one year training for war service. Thus it might be said that the Kahler School of Nursing, fathered by Dr. Henderson and mothered by Miss Gill, was born in Rochester, Minnesota, at the Colonial Hos- pital, in September of 1918. . . . Miss Gill left the Colonial in August of 1919 to accept a responsible position at the Mayo Clinic. Beautiful formals of soft pastel shades blended into the colorful setting. The events of the evening were preceded by a gorgeous sunset beyond the rich, green lawn of the Country Club. Colored lights and silver stars above the banquet tables added gaiety to the occasion. The Alumni president, Miss Irene Doty, '34, welcomed the guests. Miss Doris Freitag, presi- dent of the senior class, responded in behalf of the graduating class, and announced the gift presented by the class .to the school: a Hash bulb camera. Miss Dorothy Struve, '49, Toastmis- tress, then introduced the honored guests among whom were Miss Lulu Saunders, Miss Gilberta Durland, Ethel Doyle Watson, '33g Gwendolyn Hopkins Twentyman, '33 and Jeanette Bjorgo Hogenson, '28. Miss Lulu Coutier, '30, and Lorraine Erie Wilson, '40, speakers for the reunion classes, informed us about their respective classes. Each introduced the members of her class who had returned for the banquet. Miss Alice Hitchcock continued the program by singing Golden Days and Sympathy, accompanied by Miss Maxine Hayden. ' The guest speaker, Dr. E. H. Rynearson, member of the staff of the Mayo Clinic, spoke in his usual humorous style, but left with us a sound theory for balancing our lives with relig- ion, love, work and play in order that we might become worthwhile members of society. He used Dr. Phillip Hench as an example of a man with true enjoyment and faith in his work. Kahler Alma Mater, the school song, com- posed by Ethel Lyermann, '30, was sung at the conclusion of the dinner program.
