METH ACT ONI AN 1971 Methacton Jr. and Sr. High Schools Fairview Village, Pennsylvania Volume VIII What is freedom? Are we free to speak as we feel, to say as we please, or to believe as an individual? Do we ex- press ourselves honestly or are there hidden thoughts, mental blocks obstructing the way? What roles do the government, the administration, and our own beliefs play in our realization of liberty? We, the staff of the 1971 Methactonian, have tried to present a few facts, a few opinions, and a few thoughts. Read on and find the answers to the questions in your own mind. The ideals upon which our na- tion is based were strong enough to carry the in- spired through their battles and to weather the ages so that they exist today. They are the fundamental princi- ples of liberty, equality, justice, and democracy. everywhere he is in chains. The men of 1777 — did they bleed and suffer and die for a dream that became a reality or did they die in vain for a false hope that will never be realized. Or maybe it was a step along the way — maybe men must never stop fighting for It. 6 The only freedom which deserves the name, is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it. -J L Some men say that to love is to be tied down: to be free is to have no one to care for. I say it is the other way around. We can love and be free if we are honest. Yes, I think honesty is freedom. I think honesty is love. The days I am lonely I am locked within. My smile cannot escape. But when I have friends My spirit is released And I live again. Deny them this participation of freedom and you break that sole bond, . . . the unity of the empire. My world isn't here for me yet But 1 live it still . . . And if you should tell me, with your eyes. You can't live my world I would say neither. And if you should leave and I not aware, Your eyes won't know mine to cry. My world is unknown unseen untouched. And I search for it in every smile and cloud I meet. I searched for it in you. The world moves on and I go along looking for mine, I hoped I could do it .. . with you. MLW 19 My mind's just a question And exhausted soon I'll be What is life and love If we say not what we feel. I'll give you a kingdom with geese and gold and fiery dragons and knights of old but that's not me. I live in a meadow with hair down to here There's room for you if you want it. MLW When the wind blows free Men draw their coats closer. They must conform To the dictates of nature. When the sun is warm and men Are released from the wind's grasp, Then they are liberated And movement is free. Why must it be one or the other? Why can't mankind be nature's brother? No one can be perfectly free until all are free. LEFT: Bill Beideman concentrates on fixing an electric toaster in Appliance Repair Shop. ABOVE RIGHT: Okay, everything's in place. Spirit was the theme of the 1971 sports season. Surely it was well carried out, for it was during this year that we be- came eligible for the Spirit Award sponsored by the WFIL radio station. Disc jockey George Michaels made an appearance during a pep rally in which the students displayed an overwhelming amount of spirit. Within a few months, word was sent to us that we had won. George Michaels returned to award us the trophy and we proudly accepted it, knowing we had lived up to our name. It was truly the Year of the Warrior . Meeting s in session; everybody waits to participate in the events of the day. The President presides and he sets out to ac- complish as much as possible in the meeting. He calls upon his faithful committee leaders who organize and instigate the activities of the class. So this is where it all begins, students actively joined together in a common cause to promote their class into becoming the best there s ever been. This is the year! At last the juniors have a place in school citizenship. Congress allows its members to voice fellow students' ideas. Congress is students' ideas. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS ROW 1: C. A junior is a substantial underclassman who has obtained new respon- sibilities and opportunities. By helping to originate and by participating in class-sponsored activities he has contributed a great deal towards a unified class. He must now evaluate himself and decide whether he is capable of carrying out his previous plans or whether he must change them due to the lack of perseverance. Opportunity has knocked and he must be prepared. He may also look back and learn from past mistakes. Thus he becomes able to think for himself and form more intelligent ideas. In being responsible, active classwise, and learning from mis- takes, the junior has reached a level of maturity which enables him to cope with the burdens of the upcoming senior year. Vo-Tech It's only our second year, yet we've learned so much that we feel that we know everything. There are even more difficult ideas to perceive than last year. Are we able to stride with the pace? We're not so sure that we can, but we will try. With this need to carry out our goals to the greatest abil- ity, our futures will become more meaningful and clear to us. It's all so new and different. No one expected it to be this way, but it's wonderful. Every- thing is ahead of us, a special trade which must be mastered by our own individual abili- ties. It looks so fascinating to see everyone busy about their work which they will carry on throughout their lives. I too, am one, and I will put forth all my knowledge; I will share it with my peers; together we shall make our world a better place to live in. HOMEROOM 124 ROW 1: D Adamson, C. Bean, R. Bean. Tenth Grade I am an inbetweener. I have no real significance among the other classes of the school. What should I do to feel a part? I suppose I should start by getting ac- tive and making plans for my two most important years ahead. If I want my class to be outstanding, I should find the faults of others and then I will be prepared or perhaps avoid such errors. Although I'm at the bottom, someday I'll be at the top. It's up to me to instigate new ideas. I can even save some for when my turn comes just so we have the best. I don't feel so inbetween now. I'm proud that I have such a great thing to look forward to. Eighth Grade I have been in school eight years now And it seems to me just the other day, That I could not understand how You added and multiplied that way. And I remember that day clearly When I wrote my first composition; Though the words do not come back to me, I ended each sentence with a preposition. They come to me now in this eighth year, The things behind and the things ahead. I have my friends to help me here; I look to the future without fear or dread. SECTION 8A1. ROW 1: T. Cragoe, A. Seventh Grade In this transition into a high school atmo- sphere, our seventh graders find themselves in crowded halls with ringing bells and classes filled with new faces. They are con- fronted with a whole new system. They have more teachers from whom they will learn new ideas. These new ideas will help a seventh grader to express himself in his own way. As the uncertain newcomer is walking through the halls, he will soon come to real- ize how much more freedom he has in mak- ing decisions for himself than previously. At first, the seventh grader may shy away from these privileges, but as time goes on he will learn to appreciate them and to use them to their fullest. SECTION 7A1 ROW 1: P. Maher, S. Connelly, D. Friday's performance went well, lots of laughter and applause. Now all we have to do is survive Saturday. A Midsummer Night It was Friday, May 22, and as juniors we were gathered at the ballroom of George Washington Country Club. The music by Guy Greco and the Four Saints filled the room as gowns swished by. Outside the sky was clear and the air refreshing. Our Midsummer Night had finally come after months of preparation by the various busy committees. It had been hectic, but now the reward was here and the big night was almost over. No, not quite! Lights were lit far into the night at the many Post Prom Parties that were held. It was really just the beginning! I hope you enjoyed May 22 23, because I did. 161 November 7 dawned as a beautiful day for Meth- acton's 1970 Homecoming events. In the morning our varsity hockey and soccer teams played a vigorous game with the alumni. As game time approached, multicolored floats with streamers started rolling into Methacton with just last minute touch-ups to be made, for the halftime events. In the afternoon the excit- ment grew. Pre-game start- ed out with the senior high band and was soon joined by the junior high band. As the game began the ex- citment reached it's peak. But soon died down by a look at the score board. By halftime things looked grim. But at the announce- ment of the queen, things looked brighter than ever. It stayed that way to the end. We may have lost a game, but we gained a beautiful Homecoming Queen. The dance that evening, sponsored by the class of 1971, brought together many graduates who came back to share their adven- tures with friends. It was a beautiful day that served it's purpose. Homecoming 1970 TOP: Doreen Rhoads receives the crown of roses from Peggy Arena, after the announcement that Doreen had been voted Homecoming Queen. CENTER: The queen and her escort, Russ Ressler, smile happi- ly at the Homecoming crowd, at the peak of the day's activities. RIGHT: The former Homecoming Queen, Peggy Arena, seems just as excited as Doreen Rhoads, the 1970 Queen, as they are displayed on the Student Council float with their escorts. LEFT: Senior members of the Court, Lynn Ambler and Laurie Zander, and their escorts, Brant Keyser and David Hausner, ride on the senior float underneath the dauntless mascot, the Pink Panther. CENTER: A warm smile can be seen on the face of the junior representative, Robin Robbins, and her escort, Don Parker, as they enjoy the excitement of Homecoming Day. BELOW: Janice Minnich and her escort, Tom Sawyer, follow the queen on their festive soph- omore float, extending hearty hellos to fellow classmates. February 6th was a night seniors will remember for a long time. It was the evening of our Senior Banquet. The meal consisted of several courses; and therefore it continued on into the evening. At the conclusion of the meal. Presi- dent Fitzgerald read our class prophecy, which gave us a humorous look into the future. Several of the senior wills were read, and then many senior awards were given out to various seniors. When the band arrived, dancing started both on the main dance floor and the balcony that sur- rounded the ballroom. The lights were dim, and the atmo- sphere entertaining, but all good things must come to an end. The evening closed as beautifully as it began. 169 Look at those teachers! ... could you see it if they came to school like that? . . . 1 like that flappy bird . . . no, 1 think the mouse is better — who IS it? . those dancers' legs aren't even . . . Mrs. McGinniss is the only person in this whole show who can dance .. Oh! I get it . . that mouse keeps eating green cheese . that's why it's getting so fat . . . those teachers in their bathrobes have hairy legs when is intermission? . .. some of those jokes are pretty sad ... oh! ... is it over? ... I liked it. Vincent F. Farina Chief School Ad- ministrator and Supervising Principal. Dear Graduates: Each year, at your request, I have attempted to leave with you a message from my own heart. This year I want to give you some excerpts from an author whom I have always respected and enjoyed, James A. Michener, as he writes in The Quality of Life . One of the reasons why life today seems more complex than it did half a century ago is the speed with which bad news communicates. We pay a fearfully high price for freedom. I fear that if certain disruptive forces continue to threaten our civil peace, the average citizen will find himself so repelled that he will flee to any strong type of central government which promises con- trol and discipline. Thus we could lose our freedom. The disruptive forces are these: crime; gunfighting; revolutionary student activity which insults and outrages the pub- lic. By continued irresponsibility our dissidents can call into being the very thing they oppose: a dictatorship. To make protest through viligying our army, or flaunting enemy flags, or inviting assault by the police is an in- flammatory game that ensures retaliation. What we require is a balance between protest and stability. If through indifference we lose our liberties, we shall not regain them in this century. Above all we must have courageous leadership, and this we deserve. We are intelligent enough to restore control; we must do so because we are fighting for the continuance of a great de- mocracy — one worth saving. Lest you get the wrong picture let me say emphatically, I am very hopeful about you, our students of Methacton, as I see you in a variety of situations. I am not a primitivist. I do not automatically think that old ways are best. I am for change, and when it also represents progress, I am happy. I see the future as a combination of the constructive work of the stable joined with the proliferating ideas of the other leadership. In the years ahead of you, it will be the young leaders of today, sobered by responsibility, who will give this nation much of its direction, and this is necessary for the development of a strong society. Every major question or suggestion originating in the community or school must be brought to the School Board and decided upon there. A big renovation in the regulations this year concerned the school dress code. Girls are now permitted to wear slacks as a result of the proposal of Stu- dent Council, the approval of Mr. Byrne and the confirmation of the School Board. Many other decisions are reached concerning school mat- ters; some are routine, but they must be made. Most of the Board's work is done in committee but open meetings are held on the 1st Tuesday of every month. Ralph j. Cissono, Administrative Assistant for Business Affairs Alpheus P. So it is with ideals. Listen to all approaches with an open mind, even if you disagree with them. Weigh them carefully. During your days at Methacton we sincerely hope we have given you the foundation to carry forth your every aspiration. May I wish each and everyone of the Class of 1971 a strong and last- ing future. Through the course of the year, guidance counselors have been working to find ways of lessening the burdens on students. Confer- ences are held in order to acquaint us with our counselor. Together they search for the possi- ble opportunities that we may obtain through the scheduling of classes and offering means of outside help. Students who want to be informed, or simply want to enjoy the pleasure of reading, have only to thank the friendly librarians here at our school. There is an amazing amount of work in- volved in keeping the library in working condi- tion. There would be chaos in one of the most important rooms in the school if literature were not properly catalogued and stored. Fortunately, this does not happen because of the efficiency and hard work of the librarians. SENIOR HIGH LIBRARY STAFF. Suzanne Mecke, Clerk-Typist, Newart Kaplan, Librarian.
