Landis, Mr. Paul Koons, Mr. William Yoh, Mr. Paul Swank, Mr. Oliver 20 TO THE CLASS OF 1968 Every generation of Americans must- somewhere, sometime, somehow - pay an installment in the currency of personal sacrifice for our fre8dOIT1. General Harold K.Johnson I have faith in the human race: I have faith in Americansg and I have a high regard for its youth - you, who to- morrow must lead a troubled and complex world in the cause of freedom. But I ask you to master yourself before you seek to master others: to have a heart and a mind which are clean, and high standards which are attainable. While you reach into an unknown future, never disregard the past- its errors as well as its successes - and be aware of your personal limitations without letting them stifle your ambition. Then you will fulfill your duty as an American patriot. When we think of patriotism, we think in terms of duty and honor, but never forget that there are other contrib- uting factors. Morality is a prerequisite of theselvirtues, for morality is the cement which holds man together as a human being. Moral principles are those rules in life which help us respect the other man, regardless of race, creed, color, or nationality. That respect is dictated by the silent voice of God in each of us - our conscience. If you heed that voice, your conscience will be strong. Closely allied with morality is religious faith. Belief in God will help you build strong character and will mold you for your role in life as an integral part of a family. That faith is the sort of thing that will make you strong enough to know when you are weak, brave enough to face reality when you are afraid, courageous enough to stand up in the storm of life, and human enough to have compassion on those who fall. Like religion, patriotism is glorified by most of us, but, unfortunately, is all too often misunderstood by some. No greater honor can be given to any man than the privilege of serving his fellowman, his God, his country - always something bigger than self. The rever- ing of such a privilege is patriotism. If you possess it, it will build courage when courage seems to fail you, it will give you something to cling to when the cause for faith seems nonexistentg it will create hope when hope seems to forsake you. And thus patriotism is the kind of virtue that rewards the man who possesses it. lf the going is sometimes difficult, remember the words of the great American Douglas A. lVlacArthu r: Duty - Honor - Country ... those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. 4 guna Vincent F. But when we have tasted its reality itwill mean to us birth, deliverance, a new creation of ourselves. ltwill be what health is to the sick man, what home is to the exile, what the loved one given back is to the be- reaved. As we draw near to it a solemn glad- ness should fill our hearts. lt is God's great morning lighting upthe sky. Ourfears are the terror of children in the night. The night with its terror, its darkness, its feverish dreams, is passing awayg and when we awake itwill beintothe sunlight of God. . -Fuller 105 CLASS OF 1969 Cut with the tools of experience CLASS OF 1970 108 Many faceted with knowledge I I CLASS OF 1971 the light of hope Unclouded by CLASS OF 1972 CLASS OF 1973 . ll4 O Uncertainty. 115 SPORTS W, G 5.2 , X ' V s O A 5 A - W- 'H ' - g - -,::,' - - ,J , 69' 1 ' XX, N BNC x s s u ! v X i Q Q 1 l 1 U S 1 I Q X Q Q I I 1 E E i X 1 i J Victories that are easy are cheap. ..
