“There is a destiny that makes us brothers None goes his way alone. All that we send into the lives of others Comes back into our own.” Edwin Markham Over the past five years at Methacton you have learned that, as your abilities increase, so do vour responsibilities — to yourself and to others. This lesson — the “fourth R,” you might call it — is more important to you and to your country than all of the friendships and memories that you will carry away — as precious as they may be. The end of one venture is but the beginning of another adventure. Graduation from your Alma Mater is just one step toward another adventure — higher formal education or vour subsequent quest with the real challenge — Life itself. The demands of our society are numerous, complex, di- versified and ever changing. The continuing hope of our free way of life depends greatly on the quality of the vir- tues you have strengthened or acquired here. Perse- vereance, desire, and fortitude never go out of fashion among responsible adults. In our democratic society, you will have the freedom of choice to be either active or passive, a doer or an onlook- er, as you please. You may choose simply to stand and watch the world go by. But you do have an implied moral obligation to be a participant rather than a spectator. It is stimulating to be active in a worthwhile cause; it is morally paralyzing to make a virtue of noninvolvement. Life is action — do vour part and do vour best. Partici- pation is what counts. Whatever course in life you pursue, work diligently. Apply the intelligence, with which you have been blessed, along with the knowledge you have ac- quired. But remember also, that all of the knowledge in the world is useless without courage. It is not enough merely to know what is right. May the quality of your thinking be mighty; for then vour accomplishments can be mighty, too! For only as we are great can we serve, and only as we serve can we con- tinue to be great! Best wishes to each of you. Vincent F. Farina Supervising Principal 15
