The Senior Class of 1961 Presents The Meteor Metamora High School Metamora, Ohio Fifty years ago the first graduating class of Metamora High School completed twelve years of education, passed through the portals of learning, and went on to adult life. The seven graduates of 1911 are pictured above. HAROLD OTTGEN took up farming and in later years has been a self-employed painter. BERT MITCHELL, a World War I veteran, was employed by the Toledo and Western Railway for a number of years. He returned to Metamora as a clerk in the Sanders Grocery Store, later purchasing the business. He served as a Metamora School bus driver for several years. CARL MITCHELL entered World War I and chose this field as a career. At the present time he is a resident of the Soldiers' Home at Sandusky. HAZEL OTTGEN was married to Arthur Schlatter after graduation and now lives in North Street, Michigan. CHARLES MALONE started his career as cashier in the Metamora Home Savings Bank. He established the Biehl-Malone Funeral Home and the Malone-Insurance Agency. At present he is president of the Metamora State Bank; treasurer of the Swanton Savings and Loanj director of the Community Savings, Sylvanla; clerk of the Town- ship Trustees; vice president of the State of Ohio CKO; chairman of the Fulton County Republican Executive Com- mittee, and a trustee of the Metamora Public Library, being one of its original organizers. He has been an active member of the American Legion for 40 years and holds a life membership. He is a member of the Metamora Fire Department and has devoted a great deal of time to the Fulton County Red Cross. HARRY TREDW AY was employed at the Metamora Home Savings Bank until he entered service in World War I. He is now cashier at the Lyons Bank and also clerk of the Lyons Borad of Education, a position which he has held for 40 years. HAROLD HEFFRON enrolled at the University of Michigan where he studied medicine. He entered practice in Metamora with his father and is now located in Adrian, Michigan. He is a World War I veteran. Their chosen paths varied, but they all became successful citizens, building their lives on the foundation laid in the elementary and secondary schools and climazed by graduation day. The 1961 Meteor tries to show some of the activities, work, and spirit of this foundation being built fifty years later as the present-day students, from kindergarten through the twelfth grade, work and strive for the same goals--graduation and worthy citizenship. The Meteor staff wishes to honor those 1911 graduates for achieving their goals and living successful lives based on the knowledge and ideals gained while students of the Metamora School. In addition, the staff extends to the present Metamora students best wishes in their efforts to attain results which will etch their names, too, in the rolls of outstanding Metamora High School graduates. Dedicated to Mr. Bitter To the one who has opened up to us a path of clearer understanding by his patience and guidance as a teacher, his kind tolerant ways, his understanding of our problems, and most of all, his friendship for each of us, we, the seniors of the class of 1961, do hereby dedicate this ed- ition of the Meteor to Mr. Julius Bitter. Appreciation We, the Meteor staff, would like to show our appreciation to Miss Ruth Nachtrieb for the devoted help she has given us on the 1961 Meteor. However, the members of the Meteor staff are not the only ones to be thankful. Each high school student at M. H. S. has benefited from the knowledge she has given and the examples which she has set. All the past graduates of her classes will agree that the knowledge which they received from her has helped them to obtain their jobs. Words cannot really express our appreciation, so we will close with a mere Thank you. Miss Nach- trieb. Administration Superintendent O. J. PIFER A.B. Neither of us had anything else to do so we decided to take a trip and see if we could find some of our old class- mates. We decided to visit the capital first, so we boarded an airplane where Janet Fuller, the stewardess, showed us to our seats. She informed us that Richard Stasa was our pilot. He made a safe flight even though he was one of Whirley Birds instead of a pilot of a passenger plane. While in Washington we visited President Kennedy and found out that Floyd Brand was writing his speeches. Richard promised us a ride in his helicopter, so our next stop was New York City. There were posters all over the airport saying that Mary Bettinger was the star at the Metropolitan Opera. We looked around at some of the other advertisements and found John Hudik a ventriloquist on Broadway. Of course, his dummy was Sandy Barrett. We visited the Empire State Building. It was too much of a temptation not to look down. We got quite a shock when we saw Janice Nichols washing the window we were trying to look out of. We said good-bye to all our friends in New York and boarded a jet bound for France. As we were flying over the English Channel, we were informed that we just missed Larry Crossman. He is now swimming the Channel just for kicks and is nationally known. Paris was our next stop. We visited Audrey Vershum first. She told us she was a French teacher. She also told us that just a few blocks away Peggy Woodward had started a Jewel Tea Company and Lynda Clendenin, now Mrs. Richard Pifer, is running a greenhouse. Next on the agenda were the deep dark jungles of Africa. We ran for cover because it sounded as if a herd of elephants was coming. False alarm. It was Bill Simon, John Gleckler, and Barney Steiner on elephants. Right behind them came Margaret Adair who is now a veterinarian in case one of the animals gets sick or in case Barney gets sick. Africa was a little too wild for us so we visited China. We toured the country in a rickshaw driven by Dale Pinkelman. SANITARY DRY CLEANING CO. 1331 Conant Street Maumee, Ohio -- TW 3-3319 JOHN SEXTON CO. National Wholesale Grocers Detroit 32, Michigan prophecy From rickshaw to airplane, we went to Hawaii to see Sue Ann Donahue hula. Really, she’s a good dancer. Since Hawaii is a new state, we thought it would be nice to see Alaska, too. There we found Ronnie Komon’s secret to success. He was digging his own gold. Our trip was just about ended but we had a few more stops. Las Vegas, Nevada, was very inviting. Here we found Rosie Eisel working in the Sands Hotel which is now run by the former Janet Duncan, who is now Mrs. Fred Beck. On our way home we stopped in Chicago to see Phyllis Fike polka on ice skates to the music of Jim Studenka’s polka band, and also while in Chicago we stopped at Marshall Field’s where we saw Rita Miller modeling a beautiful dress which was designed by Becky Gordon. By the way, if you would like a dress designed just for you, Becky's telephone number is WAtermelon 812 green. We ran out of gas and had to land in a field a few miles southwest of Metamora. It just happened to belong to none other than Mr. and Mrs. Joe Horak. Must be Carol Langenderfer finally got Joe to the altar. Carol, along with nine little Horaks, gave us a ride to Metamora. On the way she told us that Metamora now has a university. This was quite a shock so we thought we'd better look into the matter. We found Judy Moore playing first chair trombone in the band. We always knew Judy would use her music ability. We couldn't pass up a chance to see the high school so that was our final stop. We talked to the superintend- ent, John Hassen, and the principal, Lynn Ott. Not all the class left old M.H.S. Jonathan Foreman and Charlie Houttekier were the new cooks in the cafeteria. As we were leaving the school, we noticed Suzie Pinkelman sitting on a chair by the office. We had to look into this matter, too. Well, Suzie, don’t feel too bad. Those jokes we told through high school weren't very funny anyway. After our big trip we were quite tired so we hopped in our little old car and headed back to our office where we resumed our positions as President and Vice President of our Advice to Lost Lovers Club.
