Roosevelt died of cerebral hemorrhage and Vice President Harry S. Truman took office. President Truman was widely quoted for saying The buck stops here and If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Atomic bombs were dropped on Japan's Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Marines storm Iwo Jima. World War II was over as Germany and Japan were forced to accept unconditional surrender. Peace is worldwide. The United Nations was established. RKO radio signs Boris Korloff for horror show parts. A loaf of bread cost 9 cents. A gallon of milk cost 31 cents delivered. A B-25 bomber crashed into the Empire State Building in New York. U.S. food rationing ended on all items except sugar. Bess Myerson was crowned Miss America. Ray Mil land wins Best Actor for 'The Lost Weekend. Joan Crawford wins Best Actress for Mildred Pierce. Cordell Hull, of the US, is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Mary Chase receives a Pulitzer Prize in Drama for Harvey. Inventions and discoveries from 1945 include Tupperware and an antibiotic salve. Bacitracin. Ball point pens went on sale. Animal Farm by George Orwell and Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor were published. Hit songs included Let it Snow and June is Bustin' Out All Over. The Detroit Tigers won the world series. Eddie Arcaro won the Kentucky Derby for the third time. Boxer Rocky Graziano scored 5 knockouts at Madison Square Garden. The Cleveland Rams beat the Washington Redskins, 15-14, to become the NFL championship winners. The Toronto Maple Leafs win hockey’s Stanley Cup. Southern California beats Tennessee 25-0 to win the Rose Bowl.
