Riedel at a party sponsored by the Home and School Association. ln the smaller picture above, lright to leftl are Father Riedel, former principal, Joe Dorsey, '42 lmaster of ceremoniesl, and Father Kuehn, newly-appointed principal. Pictured at the right are the guests of the evening: some of Father's clerical friends, his relatives, the Sisters, and present and former students of Messmer. From the family of '55 - The spirit of Messmer must always echo Father Riedel's name. His loyalty to MHS was the strength of our own personal spirit. Fifteen years of zealous, energetic labor will never be forgotten by the thousands of young people Father served. His kind word to anyone, a deep understanding of youth, his concern for the individual student, and the multitude of thoughtful deeds which were not duties have put Father in our hearts forever. The very things and many occasions which have become traditional at Messmer were inaugurated in large part by Father Riedel. To Father Riedel-our former principal, friend, counselor, teacher, priest of God-we promise a continued prayerful remembrance. We extend our best wishes for his happiness at St. Francis and wish him special blessings on his work as rector of the minor seminary. 7a543u'en1f'faaeJla.. There is another tribute we must pay before this year closes - to Sister Marella - who leaves Messmer after six years as Vice-Principal and Superior. Much of the credit for the smooth running of the school is due to Sister's method of planning ahead. Her capabilities have been proved in the early arrangement of classes and student programs, as a result, there has been no confusion on the first day of school. Known for her sense of humor, Sister could face the morning office rush with a big smile. One of the graduates remarked, You can always have a word with her. She is always willing to help. Sister can smooth out troubles. Many thanks to you, Sister Marella. Our prayers go with you for success and ioy in your next assignment. c,kX i' - i Reverend Vernon J. Kuehn Principal, Counselor The world is calling desperately to youth for leadership. Not prosaic, not ordinary, but living, dynamic, spiritual leadership. The problems of the day in labor, government, family, international relations, stagger the initiative and hope of even the stongest. An examination of the mistakes and failures of the past brings the realization that man cannot go it alone. He needs the help of God to face this struggle for life. Students of Messmer, you should be happy and grateful that the vision of God in daily life comes into the very atmosphere of your classrooms. What others must seek in Sunday school classes and Sunday sermons, what many search for and find so rarely in the secular press, you are taught as an integral part of school subiects. To the graduating seniors this philosophy of education gives hope and strength. May God grant you the courage to become the leaders that the times demand. Moy you never let God down. To the underclassmen it is a challenge. You will meet the problems of the future with the equipment you acquire today. May you never waste one moment in your training for leadership. 9 Mmwpwuhpuuummmbwwquhgmn Rev. Louis E. Zick St. Monica Parish Rev. Joseph Mueller St. Leo Parish Rev. John T. Stehling Financial Administrator Problems that would puzzle an- other man have become quite the routine for our financial man, Father Stehling. We are convinced that an exceptionally jovial spirit is Father's secret for balancing the seriousness of his position and making the two come out in a pleasant life for all of us at Messmer. Be warned: don't get in the way of Father's ready quip! Reverend James R. Daleke Teacher, Counselor Top honors for recording class activities go, without doubt, to Father Daleke. What was once a hobby has become the accepted thing in Father's English and speech classes. Many a student has over- come stage fright and hesitancy in speech because of Father's efforts and experiments. Father also teach- es classes in religion and is spiritual advisor of the Sodality. .X xi . gi WF lx , -XA my X X 5 A Reverend Ralph R. Schmit Teacher of Religion, Counselor, Director of Athletics With the welcoming of this school year, we also welcomed Father Schmit as a full-time faculty member. Messmer is by no means new to Father, he has been religion instruc- tor here since l946. Besides coun- seling and teaching, he assumed the numerous duties of atheletic director. ln this capacity Father has tried to unite the student audience with the student team members in an effort to show that both are important in this phase of devolping school spirit. We hope your stay at Messmer, Father, will be happier each year. Reverend Carroll A. Gunther Director of Religion, Teacher of Religion and Biology, Counselor A black cassock zipping through the corridor is almost surely to be that of Father Gunther, as he dashes off to one of his classes. Father's genuine interest in teaching is very evident in his excellent class work. The C.S.M.C. claims Father as its spiritual director. A man ot many accomplishments, he now gives many hours each week to his pastor- al duties as administrator of St. James parish in Mequon. There's never a dull moment in Father Gun- ther's week. 5 .Z ,f!lSister Marella . . STUDENT COUNCIL Many services are rendered the student body by the Student Council. Social ac- tivities, ticket-selling campaigns, elections, are discussed at semi-monthly meetings, and, if approved by the administration, they are presented for the support of the student body. The Latin Club meets monthly and is under the di- rection of Sister Antony Mary. All members par- ticipated in a nation-wide Latin examination. LANGUAGE CLUBS GERMAN CLUB Agnes Heinrich's authentic Bavarian costume aroused the interest of Antoinette Erz, Francis Eibl, Tom Lorsung, Caroline Hahn, and Joyce Maiewski lbelowl at one of the meetings of the German Club. Sister M. Frances Therese guided the club in its program of movies and panel dis- cussions on every phase of German life. In November, members attended the Mil- waukee Folk Fair. They also studied the music, art, and literature of the German masters. PAN-AMERICAN CLUB On April l4, when Mrs. Charles Stoffel lseated, leftl told the club about her trip to Mexico, she wore a beautiful china poblono cos- tume which was admired by Paul Raiski, Charles Stoffel, Barbara Schneider, Charles Beck, and Judy Smith. At other semi-monthly meetings, Pan- American Club members heard speakers from the Phillipines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. A Christmas party was highlighted by a Mexican piiata, an imitation animal filled with candy, prizes, and other good things. Sister M. Verola is the advisor of the club. Weske, Head Coach Bob Regent RIGHT OFF THE GRID Fifty-tive varsity candidates posed a problem when Coach Bob Regent and his assistants, Dick Romanski and Norm Domach, began pre-season drills. With spirits high, the Bishops looked for- ward to a prosperous season. In the first game, the Bishops lost a tough con- test to Notre Dame, while Pius and St. Catherine's also got the nod. Fighting for every yard on a slippery field was not enough when our team played the Junior Hilltoppers, who took the game at 31-0. Messmer picked on the Dons for one of their better games. After a quick touchdown by the Dons, Gene Kealty racked up an 89-yard iaunt and then scored from the 3-yard line, putting the score 7-6 in the Don's favor. The last six-and-a- half minutes proved to be fatal, four quick touch- downs provided the sudden victory for the Dons. Fumble-itis la disease which hits every team at some timel attacked the Bishops in the form of Waukesha Memorial, ending in a 19-O score. BISHOP'S BEST Picked as outstanding football players this season were lstandingl Gene Kealty and Bill Duquaine, honorable mentiong Jim Aehl, All-Conference, and lseatedl Terry Dineen, All-Conference. BULLET PASSES GIVE HOMECOMING CROWD FIRST WIN St. John Bob Weske passed for three touchdowns to give the Bishops Cl deserving victory. A sleeper play caught the Bishops off-guard and the Eagles scored their only touchdown, ending the game at 20-7. REVENGING REDWINGS SLIP BY MESSMER Notre Dame Gallops by Aehl and Murphy tied the score at T2-12, but the Redwings took advantage of a Bishop fumble in the last quarter and turned it into the game-win- ning touchdown. HARD DRIVING ANGELS PICK UP A WIN St. Catherine A 57-yard pass play to Gene Kealty gave the Bishops their tally, as the Angels ran for a quick win, 33-6. Fathers Kuehn and Schmif look over the field at an early fall game. ALERT DEFENSE KEEPS BISHOPS FROM SCORING Pius Second-half sprinting wore down the Bishop defense, leav- ing the Popes out on the long end of the score, 20-O. 'hem-1 Nw. Y.C.S. members are interested in student problems lknown as the Social lnquiryl and their consideration in the light of Christian principles. As proper motivation they read a selection from the Gospel and decide upon an act of service to perform the following week. Three groups in school work under the guidance of Sisters M. Monica, M. Janet, and Caroline Marie. CONFRATERNITY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE One of the newest clubs in school, this one follows directly the iniunction of the Holy Father. Every Saturday, two of the girls help Sister catechists by teaching prayers to public- school children at St. James, Lannon. The inserted picture shows lclockwisel Janet Stordeur, Karen Neuzerling, Ann Guzzonato, Mary Ann Haertl, and Carol Schmidt discuss- ing posters they make and use in their work. This is a heart-warming and fanciful high comedy in mod- ern setting and costume. Mrs. Savage is determined to put her fortune to a noble and unselfish use among social misfits in a sanatorium. Here she finds happiness, away from the realistic world where people do anything for money. The audience was left with the feeling that somehow the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty. TOP. Messmer's arch rival, Marquette, was no match for the Blue Wave as they crumbled under a 22-point spree in the fourth quarter. The Bishops showed fight in every game they played, taking a double victory from St. Bona- venture and a split win over Marquette and Catholic Memorial. Non-conference games were no trouble to the Bishops, as they posted successive wins over North, Boys' Tech, Riverside, and a close contest with King, leaving the sea- son with a record of 7 wins and I3 losses. Reviewing the tougher games, Bosco and Pius were the hardest fought of the season. Although the Bishops came out at the short end of the scene, they always retained their poise and spirit. The team play, this year, was marked by accurate shooting and aggressive rebounding, chiefly by .lim Wrob- bel who won himself an All-Conference berth. Bill Du- quaine, the holler guy, sparkplugging every play, the fancy dribbling of Gene Kealty and Tom Schramka, the push- shot artist, provided many a thrill. With Coach Regent directing the B-team and Mr. Romanski the Freshmen lthe first since '45l, the fans can look forward to a team alive with new talent. VARSITY. Standing: T. Schromka, T. Dineen, R. Hannon, 45 Girls' Sports To develop those sound minds, which depend so much on sound bodies, class periods in physical education in- clude many different features. Regular calisthenics may be strenuous, but tumbling can provide exercise along with a lot fun. Of course, there is the perennial favorite, basketball, for those who can take a more violent form of exercise. Several basketball teams were organized but seemed to peter out, without announcing champion- ships. ln February, eight seniors took part in the annual inter-school play day at St. Mary's Academy. The fine art of dancing finds its place in the program, too. One of the classes specialized in square dancing, studying the many types, forms, calls, etc. Bowling took a good deal of time from the female keglers. Underclassmen as well as upperclassmen were represented on teams. Mrs. Bartz and Lorelyn Kleiner lthe very active president of the groupl worked out a schedule which carried right through to loving cups. To wind up the swim program, a large group of girls presented a water ballet. Performing together to music, they made beautiful formations which were enhanced by colored lights. A few boys helped out in a clowning act. The nice weather of early spring found some of the girls preparing for the outdoor games - tennis and golf. While the number reporting for these was rather limited, competition was quite keen. lUp to the time of printing this book, no champions had been announced.l Mrs. Bartz's iob is a big one, but senior leaders per- formed a tremendous task this year again by assisting her in various ways. Taking roll call, keeping sports sup- plies available, helping beginners in swimming-these were the main tasks of a little group that did their work generously and graciously. Of course, this service gave the girls the opportunity to earn letters and numerals. GOLf. lDown: v. Piiaegef, A. nam, J. Roppert, J. wnidsfhmadi. prwdem K Corby, ,reaswer Standing. P. Murphy, D. An extra task they assumed this year was to publicize the pre-Christmas Benefit Sale for the new Motherhouse of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Self sacrifice and responsibility are the sup- ports on which the monitors base their excellent service. ACOLYTES Every Friday Holy Mass is offered in the audi- torium and in the gym. Thursday is Exposition Day, that means Exposition at 9 A.M. and Bene- diction at 2:30 P.M. October and May bring Benediction services daily. Serving at these re- ligious exercises makes up the regular assignments of the acolytes. All boys at Messmer have the opportunity to be acolytes. Those who serve at the altar of God experience a satisfaction that can be obtained only in the Divine Presence. Un- wittingly, too, they are a powerfully good example to other students. Out-of- town activities included a trip to Madison to visit the state capitol buildings. In the bus, ready to leave for Madison. CHEMISTRY CLUB A club that really bubbles ltest-tubes notwithstandingl with activity and pro- ducing very tangible results is the Chemis- try Club, The club's advisor, Sister M. Uncounted hours of watching and testing have brought members many coveted honors. On the second Wednesday of each month the members discussed scientists, presented scientific papers, watched scien- tific movies. TABB ENGLISH CLUB At a luncheon party of the Tabb English, members impersonated literary figures or authors. This was one of the social proiects which the club took as its focal point for the year. A Joel Chandler Harris Circle was formed and looked up that author's works and re-told his stories, in an attempt to recapture their charm. Their advisor, Sister M. JUNIOR AND SENIOR STUDENT COUNCIL The real work of the Student Council rests with the ideas of the seniors and Juniors. lt is they who most frequently inaugurate plans for school activities, head committees, and steer the many proiects that fill the busy life of each student. Even the general cleanliness of the school and the condition of the grounds become points of business which council members relay to their homerooms. With Sister Antony Mary guiding its decisions, the council renders the school an excellent service. , SENIOR STUCO. Front ww: R. M. Mimwsui qiozp, A. Dittl 1 lI09J, P. Mueller lII6l, C. SMOKING COURT After much discussion and hurdling of negative arguments, a long- awaited privilege was finally granted Messmer boys. The smoking com- mittee, headed by Tom Woiciechowski, first-semester school president, worked out a system of permits, behavior, and penalties. Boys may now obtain a permit to smoke on the court during their lunch period. Come snow and freezing weather, or pouring rain, or beautiful sunshine, those who puff, smoke, or drag are sure to be in their newest haunt, dubbed the Plaza Room. According to their coach, Sister M. Char- lotte, however, we can measure the club's suc- cess also by intangible things, namely, the desire for self-improvement and growth on the part of the members, coupled with hard work and a spirit of cooperation. This year's group has measured up to that standard. To the finals in Madison on April 16, Mess- mer sent the largest number in the district: six out of seven contestants. Two gold medals and four silver medals were carried off by the six finalists. M. Kramer, L. Siegrist, gold medal, J. McManus, gold medal, E. Malphy, silver medal, J. Doolan, silver medal, J. Jung, silver medal, C. Grab- ner, silver medal. l l OFHCERS. L. Siegrist, president, E. Malphy, secretary-treasurer, J. McManus, vice-president. I SPEAK FOR DEMOCRACY Messmer was also represented in the annual Voice of Democracy Contest, which took place at the Milwaukee Vocational School. The students pictured to the right competed with students from the city schools. Our contestants were: Lewis Leh- man, Gloria Deia, Mario Carini, Rosemary Gas- peretti, Eileen Malphy, and Kathleen Kirwan. TOPS lN SPEECH Laura Siegrist was a guest entertainer at the Army Day Banquet of the Women's Auxiliary of the G.A.R. at the Elk's Club. ln an original oration, The Other Side, Laura brought to the attention of her audience the finer things achieved by youth of today as opposed to deeds of violence by de- linquents. She wound up her speech with a request to consider the Holy Father's four-fold positive program for youth. OTOGRAPHY - SCHOOL SCENES eerleaders lake over during a break in the Breaker Dance. CAMERA CLUB With the guidance of Sister M. Petrine, the Camera Club spends many hours developing, printing, and enlarging pictures. The group holds regular meetings once a month. Staff photographers supply the pictorial coverage of school activities for both Four- square and Capitol. The members also run the proiectors for assembly movies. Some of the members have taken prizes in pho- tographic contests, too. CAMERA ClUB. Bob Pipp, sin Rim., Tom Reis, Mark Scobey, Jerry Smaglick, Rick Rappl, Jim Hoffmann. PROJECTIONISTS. Dick Capella, Ken Schaefer, Mark Scabey, Howard Holtz, Bob Wittig, John Wagner. Unusually serious-faced, Mr. James Spitz heads for his 2:11 class. FOR KEEPS P FOURSQUARE Every Messmerite looked forward to his monthly copy of the Foursquare. And he got it, chock-full of school-events-toecome, honors won, sports accounts, and occasionally a funny story about himself. Backed by the excellent direction of Sister M. Madeleine Sophie and the cooperation of their entire staff, the editors produced a school paper that was anticipated and cherished by everyone. A nice follow-up occurred this year by means of letters from the Principal, short sketches of the coaches, and timely editorials. W Zwdmduzp S. Kub lEditor-in-Chiefl, J. Reis Ukssociute Editorl, J. A solid infield has been built around veterans Jim Aehl, Gene Kealty, and Tom Schramka. An early win over St. Bonaventure's sent the team off to a good start. The other games of the fourteen scheduled provided the Bishops with plenty of action, but a complete list of scores was not available when this book went to print. Dick Capello looks on as Gene Kealty makes the catch. Gene Keolty attempts cl bunt in the St. Bonaventure game Coach Bob Regent gives some timely tips to Neil Corcoranp Coach Norm Domach seems to be won- dering. GOLF Through the efforts of Coach Dick Romanski and Father Schmit, golf was brought out into its own as a maior sport. .W An intramural program was used to determine the team, with the pros demonstrating their skills. The hole-in-one men played eight conference matches and were entered in the state and city tournaments. Home matches were played at Brown Deer Park. Erdtmann, Sobotik, Zdurstek, Holtz.
