U. -,,, we know you will continue to protect and guide 1 , . N us-that we may attain our eternal goal. You I will help us live truly Christian lives. With 'gf your loving care, we can obtain everlasting happi' ness by taking the right road. Keep us always under your mantle so that we may find that road-the road to heaven. I ,ff 1 'X . 0 O fl At the dedication of our St. Thomas More Chapel on the eve of Memorial Day, 1946, we felt that it would not be complete until we had in it something to honor Our Lady. After considering several ideas, a composite of pictures was sent to Europe for completion. The placque shows the school in the haekground, with angels to wateh over us. Two students were chosen to represent the family of Messmer. Virtus et scientia-fthe motto of our school ---- is quite evident in the rosary in the hoy's hands and the hook at the girl's feet. The picture of Our Lady, drawn hy a Messmerite during the war years for the honor roll which listed those who were serving in the armed forces, seemed destined for the plaeque of Gur Lady of Messmer. Maybe the reason our shrine is so precious is the knowledge that there is not another like it in the world. kv 6 325,96 The Must Rcrcremi ROMAN R. The championshipfhungry Bishops were determined at the outset of the season to add a title to their foothall fortunes: hut were sidetracked once again and ended with a season record of 1 Win, 1 Tie, and 5 Defeats. Hampercd hy numerous prefseason injuries to key players, and with hut six returning letter- men on hand, Coach Huh Maiktmwski and his assistant, Norm Domach, put on the gridiron a wellforganized and spirited eleven despite its very limited victories. Seven Blue and White gridders received all' conference rating for their individual efforts from the Milwaukee Sentinel, Milwaukee journal, and Catholic Herald Citizen. Backs: John Cummings, Ken Adisek, and Toni Pokwinski: Guards: Gary Coates and Clary Ostrowski: End: Ken Bushekg and Center: jim Herget, received honors for their consistent hard work throughout the '51 pigskin season. The junior Hilltoppers from Marquette High proved the class of the league for the second consecutive year and waltzed into the champion' ship. The lone victory was scored against Notre Dame in the oftenfpostponed homecoming en' counter. St. Catherine of Racine played the home griclders to a tie. These two bright spots in a rather dismal sea' son along with a heartbreaking loss to second' place Don Bosco closed a quarterfcentury annif versary season for Messmer's Blue and White Bishops. Nowicki was on his way, but Bugs just couldn't resist getting this one. B9 The Diamond b rc il k i n g away. M1'ss1111'1' . . R ML'SSI11t' 1' . . fm M1'ss1111'1' , I1 ML'ss111 0 r . Basketball The tremendous scoring ability of Messmer High's hoopsters was not effective enough to bring a Catholic Conference championship to the trophy case of our school. A series of heart' breakers at the conclusion of the '51752 season found a well-balanced Don Bosco quintet on top of the heap. After winning four pre-season tilts and com- piling an average of 60 points, the team found itself winning and losing alternately for the next three weeks. With the loss of joe Poehlmann, Messmer's towering center, the future of the season was in doubt. At the outset of the second round of play, a previous on-off win ability was put to rout. The next four games were impressive wins in which Messmer proved to be a title contender. How- ever, on February 3, a strong St. Bonaventure team felled the Bishops from their position as the league leaders. The next two games were lost to inspired teams, namely Pius and Cathedral, but the Messmer team figured as a logical con- tender 'til the final gun had sounded. Finishing among the league's top scorers were Guards Don Bugalski and Bob Neja. They were further honored for the sportsmanship and ability by being rewarded with all-conference honors. Seven players have retired from highfschool basketball with the close of this season, but under the expert coaching of Hub Maikowski, the com' ing basketball season will prove to be outstand' ing in Messmer's sports story. 5 X P 'X ' L. Fortyfsix lwasehall candidates answered the call for the opening of Ivlessmer's season. After a week of workouts, the squad was trimmed to fifteen with these survivors representing the Bishops' title hoxes in the first ofhcial Catholic Conference League. Seven schools, namely lviessmer, Don Bosco, Pius, Notre Dame, St. Catherine, St. Bonaventure, and Catholic Me' morial formed the conference. Defensive hasehall was the Blue and White's major weapon with good fielding and strong throwing featuring in the team's victories.
