The Most Reverend SEBASTIAN G. MESSMER Fourth Archbishop of Milwaukee Archbishop Messmer was born on August 29, 1847, in Goldach, Switzerland. He came to the United States in 1871 and studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington. On February 10, 1904, he was enthroned in St. john's Cathedral as the fourth Archbishop of Milwaukee. He governed the archdiocese for twenty- seven years. Of the fifty-five religious communities in Milwaukee, more than one-half were established during his regime. In his time, also, twenty- three charitable institutions were organized. Archbishop Messmer is known to have personally contributed much financial aid to these organizations and, as a result, he was known as the Archbishop of Christian Charity. Because of his intense interest in education, it was quite appropriate that while he was Archbishop, Marquette achieved the status of a university. Mount Mary College was established, and Messmer High School was built and named in his honor. In 1930 he returned to his birthplace for a visit, and there he died on August 4 of that year. He was both a scholarly pro- fessor and a firm promoter of Christian Education.
