MESSMER Fourth Archbishop of Milwaukee Archbishop Messmer was born on August 29, 1847, in Goldach, Switzerland. He came to the United States in 1871 and studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington. On February 10, 1904, he was enthroned in St. john's Cathedral as the fourth Archbishop of Milwaukee. He governed the archdiocese for twenty- seven years. Of the fifty-five religious communities in Milwaukee, more than one-half were established during his regime. In his time, also, twenty- three charitable institutions were organized. Archbishop Messmer is known to have personally contributed much financial aid to these organizations and, as a result, he was known as the Archbishop of Christian Charity. Because of his intense interest in education, it was quite appropriate that while he was Archbishop, Marquette achieved the status of a university. Mount Mary College was established, and Messmer High School was built and named in his honor. In 1930 he returned to his birthplace for a visit, and there he died on August 4 of that year. He was both a scholarly pro- fessor and a firm promoter of Christian Education. .-gf. .. 3 is S1 .f 1 -'23 . C A x JY ef Q X A E , 'I K i fi Quits? sims' 1, Board of Directors Rt. Rev. Msgr. OTTO A. Father Velte was a true Messmerite, having served as a member of our board of directors for thirteen years. Former students and teachers will remember him for the sincere interest he displayed in all our endeavors. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. A, .N REV. JOSEPH R. STEHLING Ifimzncizzl A 11 ministrnlor Here's a man who is always on the run. Trying to find him in one place for any length of time is almost impossible. It takes a person with real ambition and much energy to accomplish the good that Father Stehling has brought to our school. As pastor of St. Nicholas, his time is divided between Messmer and his parish. His long stay at MHS has proved him to be very competent in deciding our financial matters. Father Stehling- a man of sound judgment and quick wit. REV. LOUIS E. RIEDEL Principal, Counselor This time we caught Father on the way out. Being the head of SUMA sometimes takes him from our midst, but who of us hasn't found him always ready to assist his Messmerites both spiritually and scholastically? Father's the kind of per- son whose virtues need not be depicted in words. A capable principal and a suc- cessful priest-that's our own Father Riedel. REV. CARROLL A. GUNTHER Director of Religion, Teacher, Counselor Who says faculty members don't laugh? We have proof that they do. Sure, Father Gunther is the man we mean. He doesn't spend all his time figuring out how to keep us happy, though. Cheerfulness seems to be one of his natural attributes. Father's example of facing things with a smile will remain foremost in our minds after we leave Messmer - when the old road of life starts getting rough and we need something to keep us from giving up. REV. VERNON J. KUEHN Director of Athletics, Teacher, Counselor Father Kuehn is a man of many duties. He is spiritual director of our Catholic Students' Mission Crusade and Ecclesi- astical Assistant to Young Christian Stu- dents. As athletic director, he has done an enormous job of carrying the tradition of Messmer into the world of sports. Father's casual attitude has made it easy for us to become attached to him. Father Kuehn is an able teacher, a reliable coun- selor, and an all-around good sport. REV. GEORGE HUBER Sts. Peter and Paul Parish REV. GERALD SCHMITZ St. Boniface Parish Y' Y? HUBERT MAIKOWSKI Head Coach, Teacher of Co-Homemaking Hub speaks little of himself, but we always hear a great deal about him. To know him is to realize what a good sport is. As a former Messmer star himself, he's the right man to take charge of our athletics. Hub knows what the Messmer spirit is and he tries to keep it alive in our teams. Hub Maikowski-a skillful coach, a highly es- teemed alumnus, and a Christian gentleman. MR. WALTER FRICKE Assistant Coach Why does Mr. Messmerite seem so eager to get to his physical education class every week? The answer probably lies with Wally Fricke. He's always ready to show the boys the ropes. There are times when he gets right out on the basketball court to show how I did it in my day. Call it luck, but he can still sink 'em. Together with the boys, everyone agrees that Wally, with his lengthy patience and his cute short haircut, is a welcome asset to Messmer. MISS DOLORES HANSER Miss Hanser has been with us for two years, guiding the girls in their quest for healthful living and worthwhile play. Gym, swim, and health classes make up her busy day. Training our viva- cious cheerleaders, preparing a water pageant, and supervising girls' teams in various sports round out her full program. '4m MR. However, here are some facts that you may like to know. The figures quoted are approximate. The first class of the Diocesan High School was composed of 26 sophomores and 140 fresh- men. They met in a ten-room school build- ing, located on the property of St. Elizabeth Church and made available to us through the generosity of the Capuchin Fathers. Chorus 3. f if Junior - Senior Prom You had your picture taken in front of a lighthouse . . . You took your place in the line of the grand march . . . You danced to sweet music beneath the silver stars . . . You and your date had a refreshing drink at the prow of a big ship . . . And all the while you were thrilled by the HARBOR LIGHTS in the nauti- cal setting of this year's junior-Senior prom. For years to come, you'1l remember this social event as one of the biggest in your high school years. Ah, memories . . . Extensive preparations by these swabs, Ioan Lemkuil, Ann Plashal, Allen Hindfleisch, and Don Swetzig, transformed the gym into a perfect setting tor the theme. Y 'X 1 Allen Rindtleisch and Iim I-leger set up the silent beacon, guiding tower . . At the end of the grand march 4- and into an evening ot mirth and irolic, The juniors probably looked forward to the same event next year. The seniors would look ior- ward to their dreams beyond those deeps where ships sail on and on. 'S l i The big moment! Royalty for an evening! Varsity Football Dismal weather and unfavorable preseason comment cast a bleak shadow over the coming season as sixty-five Bishop hopefuls turned out for the first practice session of the 1950 grid year. Bolstered by only five returning lettermen it was not long before most crystal gazing sports fans had picked the Blue Wave to a lowly rank amid strong conference opposition, nevertheless, under the expert coaching combination of headcoach Hub Maikowski and his assistant, Walter Fricke, the team soon took shape and literally upset the dopester's applecarts in accomplishing the follow- ing feats. 1. Took second place in actual conference com- petition. 2. Sent four players to All-Conference berth- first team, guard Ernie Argentati and half- back Dan Hanrahang second team, guard Al Hahm and end Tom Kelley. 3. Guard Ernie Argentati won a much cov- eted berth on the First string All-State team, with Dan Hanrahan who gained an hon- orable mention in that division. 4. Adding further to his laurels, Argentati- for the first time in Messmer's history, rep- resented the school on the National Catho- lic All-Star team. Players from as far east as Rochester, New York, and as far west as Los Angeles, California, won nomina- tions. This was the 1950 grid season, its ups and downs, wins and losses, bumps and bruisesg hats off to a swell team, to Hub and Wally, to the four Fathers of Messmer, and to all who played a part in this successful year. By maintaining a good average while collecting honors on the gridiron for himself and the school, Ernie has shown most skeptics that a good athlete need not be a poor student. At the guard spot on Messmer's sec- ond place football team, Ernie gained the reputation of being the first Catho- lic Conference player to be chosen on the All-Catholic All-American high school team. Congratulations, Ernie! On the field and off you have shown sportsmanship and a spirit of fair play befitting a true athlete. All Conference Guard A1 Huhm Varsity Basketball Messmer, defending champion of the Catholic Conference, was thrown for a big loss this year by ending the season in a seventh place tie with Notre Dame. No encounter this season was an easy victory for the opposition, but weakened by inexperience the Blue Wave could not withstand the seasoned attack of their opponents. Messmer's most de- cisive losses went to this year's co-champions, St. Catherine and Marquette, who comprised the bulwark of power in the conference. The '50-'51 season saw the Blue Wave hoop- sters get off to a good start in winning 3 out of 4 non-conference tilts and then completely reverse their upward stride in losing many closely contested games. Don Bugalski, stellar Bishop guard, was chosen to a first team spot on the all-conference team as the result of a vote by coaches and players of the Catholic Conference teams. Six seniors stepped out of competition with the end of the '50-51 season: CENTERS: George Kamrath and Tom Hanrahang FORWARDS: Ted Baumgartner and Ken Steibg GUARDS: Tony Bova and Gene Steffen. The '51-'52 season poses a much brighter bas- ketball picture with a promising array of athletes up from second and third string berths, together with needed help from the ranks of the B Team. This was the six- teenth annual boxing show in which Messmer's Dempseys and Tunneys were made manifest. Twelve young pugilists received letters, and ten more won championship trophies. Outstanding Boxers Voted outstanding boxers in the two box- ing shows were Tom Flahive and Tom Kelley who gained the distinction by virtue of their very fine boxing style and punch, together with sportsmanship of the highest caliber. The silver jubilee year of the G.A.A. introduced ice skating as a winter feature and later in the season renewed an old favorite, ping pong. Regular activities consist of bowling, volleyball, basketball, softball, and the annual swim meet. Com- petition is keen among friendly rivals. We groan and moan, we ache and pain, but, oh, how we love our gym classes! The juniors were not left out of championship running: they captured the crown of the silver jubilee swim meet. Noel Nevin, Marilyn Cooper, and Iohn Roethle. l Training for the experiences of life, the development of leadership, self- confidence and poise before an audi- ence, perseverance and industry, the proper use of the tools of voice and language- these are the goals of Messmer's forensic group. With competition unusually keen in the Wisconsin Catholic Speech League, jim Sullivan took first honors in non- original oratory. Library Club Messmer's library, in charge of Sister Mary Idlephonse, can easily be termed a bookworm's delight. In fact, our li- brary containing 11,000 books, 2,000 pamphlets, and hundreds of magazines would be enough to send any book- worm reeling with indigestion. Student librarians help keep the library in run- ning order. SENIOR left to R. Axt, N. Otto, B. Thelen. G. De Chant, I. Roethle. Standing: E. Gieseke. N. Grc P. Bower, D. Domorch, M. Penske, C. Practical Homemal-ring Seniors Diane Zimmer, Donna Bochek, Doro- thy De Rycke, and joan McKernan used their talents and really enjoyed the last quarter of the homemaking course. They had lots of fun filling their hope chests. Some lucky boys are going to enjoy a half interest in their pillow cases, sheets, kitchen towels, guest towels, and rugs. Architectural Drawing Another first at MHS this year was a selective course in model homes. With mechanical drawing and a semester of drawing house plans as required background, some of Mr. William Baer's boys dreamed their plans into minutely figured work and produced beautiful little models. Yes, boys dream too! Here are joe Steppe, Don Trispel, Bob Schedler, and Ray Gierszewski with their model homes. 74 Clothing Kathleen Ellmaurer, Janice Anderson, Constance Mangen, Sheila Berth, and Shirley Gaffney enjoyed making their own dresses. Patterns and materials, darts and gathers, seams and button-holes showed the initiative each girl had displayed in her com- pleted dress. Foods When Patricia Ryan, Mary Hanus, and Dona Wolf get together to mix a cake or make a meal, you can bet your last penny it's going to be good. Many of the classes are sup- plemented with movies on canning, selection of meats, meat-carving, and table-setting. Cleanliness and neatness in this department's kitchen and dining room are a password with the girls. Camera Club Messmer's Camera Club is by far one of the most progressive as well as one of the busiest clubs at school. In its extensive program mem- bers supply both Foursquare and Capitol staffs with pictures, they find time to supply the stu- dent body with interesting movie assemblies, and at the same time reap handsome rewards in almost every type of photographic contest available. Sister Mary Lauretta guides these exponents of darkroom and developer as they work to preserve for posterity a pictorial record of life here at Messmer. At Mass in the chapel or the auditorium, at Thursday Benediction. at services in October and May, you will find some of our fami1y's boys serving - serving Christ Himself. Sodality Among the many organizations at Messmer, the Sodality is one of the few to which every Mess- merite belongs. To be a member, we need not be outstanding scholars nor do we need extraordinary qualities or talents of any sort. The only thing ex- pected of us is sincerity - a willingness to carry out the duties of a Sodalist by living as true Christian students. Through the Sodality, under the guidance of Father Riedel, we have a wonderful opportunity to practice a special devotion to Mary as our Lady of Messmer. The untiring efforts of Sister Mary Ernestine keep Sodality functions moving smoothly. we gg. N U I my The family that prays together is portrayed here in Messmer's Living Rosary. To most of us the click of a bulb, the rising sun, and the scratch of a match-all bring light and expel darkness. Yet there are those who live in perpetual darkness, those who will never again thrill to a beau- tiful sunset or hearken to the intensity of a good book. A Q1 Foursquare The Foursquare, Messmer's monthly publication, has become as much a part of our school life as the welcome sound of the dismissal bell at 3:15. But once a month at 3:15, the school does not empty so quickly, as groups of students, clutching their copies of the Foursquare gather together to exchange scuttle- butt and discuss the various eye-catch- ing pictures and thought-provoking write-ups in the four-page publication. Long hours, gruelling preparation, and downright hard work are to be found in the pages of this paper, as the Four- square staff brings forth a monthly written record of the news and happen- ings that typify life at Messmer. In like manner, in order to appeal to the students, a school must have a wholesome, pleasant atmosphere. The brunt of this arduous task falls on the shoulders of three of the most industrious men at school, who really go all out to provide a clean, orderly home for Mess- mer's family. Our Cooks Sugar and spice and everything nice is used to pro- vide Messmer's hungry hearties with well-balanced meals. Before some of you tumble out of bed, our cooks have begun to prepare the day's menu. It must be their mother hearts that prompt the love they put into their work. Ackeret, Doreen C1093 308 W.
