FRESHMEN The 328 DGDDY freshmen were distributed in nine homerooms. During the year, the organization of clubs, both for educational cnd entertainment purposes, constituted a large portion ot their extra curricular activities. One ot these was the Cheer 'Em Up Club Whose function it was to visit students in hospitals and cheer 'em up. Two other lively groups Were the Model Airplane Club, initiated by boys interested in model airplane building, and the Culture Club. Not to be outdone in any field, the treshman homerooms worked especially hard to help the missions. During the Christmas season they sent boxes of supplies to the Indian orphanages in Harbor Springs, Michigan, and New Mexico. Their year tor contact with celebrities was satisfied as a result ot an English project in which they wrote to tarnous authors. t40l Room 7fTop Row: A. Bauer, I. Firkirrs, E. Chmielewska, M. Neal Schlosser improved rapidly as the season started under way and joined the first team with Eckl, Lawrie, and Ed Posluszny. Ferd Meyer and Bay Schneck acted as alternates. BOXING Bringing to a close the l938 boxing season, l4 champions were crowned in the open and novice classes of the fourth annual boxing show. Three boys retained their crowns which they won last year. These boys were lerry Lenartz, Ray Orlikowski, and lerry Toschik. Orlikowski scored a first round knockout over lack Kortsch to win his third straight crown in as many years. He was easily the outstanding boxer in the entire tourna- ment. ln the heavyweight class, Bob Masters was dethroned by lohn Weiss in a slugfest. Masters had to give away too much weight to Weiss and tired in the third round. The bout in which the most science was displayed was in the l26 pound open class between Bob Shanahan and Ierry Toschik. Toschik emerged the winner by a close margin. Art Kaszuloowski outpunched Don Ptaschinski in the 97 pound novice class as did lohn Wetter over Dick Wronski in the novice ll8 pound class. After scoring technical knockouts in every one of his previous bouts, Erv Sutschek completed his string by stopping Bay Newell in the novice l35 pound class finals. ln a fast bout Sylvester Miller outpointed Fred Synold in the l05 pound novice division. Roderick Stemo disposed of Bay Sommers to win the title in the 112 pound novice class. Among the bigger boys, Hank Blasczyk outpunched Ioe Lococo for the 160 pound novice title. Val Ielacic was too clever for Matt Gross in the l75 pound novice class and won easily. Charles Ielacic upset Charles Struck in the l60 pound open class finals to dethrone last year's champion. Probably the two fastest boys of all the contestants in the tourney met in the open class ll2 pound division. They were lerry Lenartz, who took the decision, and Dick Schwoegler, runnerup. This year a record for attendance was set with the total number of fans well over 3600 for the shows. Messmer is fast acquiring a name as a center of amateur boxing. FATHER STEHLING'S FIRST 3Vz YEAR GRADUATES GRADERS These graduates had the unusual experi- ence ot being accompanied through twelve years ot school lite by the same priest. They entered iirst grade at Holy Angels when Father Stehling became an assistant there. When they were ready tor high school Father Stehling became financial ad- ministrator at Messmer. l70l These hard-Working students completed the regular tour-year course in three and one-halt years. To do this it was necessary for each student to either carry tive subjects a year or attend summer school sessions. Despite this added Work, each found time to participate in extra-curricular activities. 713 LESTER AND LARRY What DiMaggio is to the New York Yankees, what lonson was to Boswell, what a mother is to a home, that is what Lester Simons and Larry Sossonq are to Messmer. In 1928, one year after the school was founded, Larry and Les were added to the personnel. Any- one likes a clean, comfortable place in which to live. That's how these two men have kept the school. What would The Capitol staff have done without them when the Morrison Studio men came to take the pictures? How'd we ever have movies if Les dicln't operate the machine for us? What would the football men do without the truck-and Les? What would happen to the school if Larry and Les didn't report on time every day? 3 Le GIRLS OF ROOM 302 IN CROWNING OF THE MAY QUEEN It to Right: 'W Wolterlin, B Bykowski, L. Barnes, C.
