After several years of planning, the satellite campus became functional this year. This campus provides a unique opportunity for Messiah students to further their education in new directions, in a new setting. Messiah students enroll in the Temple courses and receive the advantages a large, urban, university offers, while they live in a more personalized setting than the university offers and study supplemental courses available through Messiah faculty. This was a year full of adjustments for the Messiah students at Temple. They had to take other residences until Messiahis Living- Learning Center at 2026 North Broad Street was ready for use. The daily ritual of fighting early-morning subway crowds to get to classes Was an experience for which Grantham residency had provided little trainin Classes with profs who g had written their own texts were frightening but instructional. Messiah has taken a great step forward, the years to come will show how great. The challenges involved are many, the awards available are great, Jr I s , a S z gf 'N . f 'K ,. 4 . ff., Y' ' ' 4 , , A , 3 .I - 'E 6 l Lug i l ,YL Q I 1 ' , A Q I , Z . I 1 ' , T 4 'af 1 . K . It is everywhere around us, yet seems to evade us when we reach out to grasp it. The look- the very essence-of life is seen so many times, yet understood or communicated so seldom. In a way, trying to describe the look of life is like trying to see love or hope. It is in abundant evidence and its effects may be often observed, but it defies definition. f 1 gn--Q The look of life visits a soccer game where players concentrate on the ball and spectators concentrate on the players. It is present when the basketball moves quickly around the court and the cheers of the crowd fill the room with resounding support. The look of life may be noticed in the anticipation that marks the gathering faces before the mailboxes and then in the mingled frustration and satisfaction that soon results. Life is open to view as scores of people descend upon the dining hall causing the disappearance of much food to the accompanying at some facets of life as . bgl' babble of many voices. And even the weary face of the diligent student, his eyes still reflecting the Slow of burned midnight oil, also reflects the look of life. Perhaps it could be Said that this look of life is exhibited wherever people are. People playing themselves in large gf0Llps, in pairs, 01' 5in81Y, are fairly overflowing with life and display it quite openly, l l Doubtless each individual has a unique impression e of the look of life, 1.53.1313 s onsored by the action P , around him and conditioned ,. by the action behind him. , -4 f 42 But erhaps, by word or Q P picture, that impression can be recalled to the fore ound savored once -.. intervening events and scenes and then fondly replaced in the mind's I library of treasured memories. I -fi For that purpose the 1969 Clarion was produced. YO REPUBLICAN Although a new organization this year, the Young Republican Club has generated much enthusiasm among both students and faculty members. The club attempts to articulate the principles and philosophy of the National Republican Party. In its initial year, the club participated in the state and national political campaigns and has sponsored the appearance of several prominent state Republican leaders. YOU G DEMOCRATS The Democratic Club was conceived in an effort to aid in the seemingly desperate uphill struggle of Hubert Humphrey for President. Stirred by the urgency of the cause, the small club was disproportionately active. An assembly was arranged with candidate Myers of the 19th Congressional district. Literature was distributed. Members heard George Wallace at the HefShCY Sports Arena and afterwards distributed HHH literature. The club arranged trips to outstanding cultural events including dramatic productions and musical performances. One of the most exciting activities the club sponsored was a weekend trip to the Stratford Festival in Canada which presented Shakespeareis 'gRomeo and Juliet. To stimulate creativity on campus, the club held the first student art show. The club also engaged in the first publication of a student anthology. The climax of the year's activities was the Israeli Art Festival which focused attention on the culture and art contributions by Israel. Named after the muse of history, the Clio Club creates and stimulates an active interest in history among its members They are able to dwell on specific points of interest which are not extensively dealt with in classes. Besides having discussion on these subjects of interest, speakers are invited to the campus to give lectures on various topics. This year the club members attended a lecture by Abba Eban, foreign minister of Israel, and also co-sponsored a trip to Franklin and Marshall College to see the Restoration comedy, The Country Wife. PL TFoRM ARTS SOCIETY The techniques of acting can best be understood through participation in dramatic productions. The Platform Arts Society gave students the opportunity to learn the handling of stage effects, the art of make-up, the portrayal of characters, and the over-all basics of stage production. Student directors insisted on correct voice inflection and interpretation. The groupis dramatic productions consisted of two student- produced and directed plays by Ionesco, The Bald Soprano, and The Lessonj, and a musical For HeaVen's Sakef, their spring production. w H--.--.,.,,-4 PLATFORM ARTS SOCIETY-Priscilla Book, Readerg Gene Elfgle, Treasurer,' Judy Hurst, Secretaryg Howard Hall, President: Vickie Pilalis, Vice-President. The first step in the formation of the council was to designate each wing of Men's dorm and the third floor of Old Main as a house Each house elected both its own officers and representatives to Dorm committees. The presidents, with Dean Tyson as advisor, form Dorm Council. In action from Dorm Council, periodic meetings between faculty and students have been arranged, regulations concerning quiet hours have been formulated, and a certain amount of house pride, exhibited in inter- house rivalry, has been aroused. Sleeping, eating, laughing, discussing, and, of course, studying are all a part of the look of life on Woodlawn and Hoffman Residences. To establish understanding and cooperation among these girls is the goal of the Women's Dorm Council. Meetings function to formulate dorm policies, discuss and solve problems, and provide for dorm parties that always mean fun and food. This year a subsidiary goal was to raise money through a bake sale and the sale of stationary to equip the dorm kitchens with cooking utensils and the halls with drapes. In a time when unbiased, creative teachcfS are needed everywhere in the world, our college chapter of the Student Pennsylvania State Education Association provides a stimulus for enthusiasm in the teaching profession. Through 1 monthly meetings of this organization, students can get a better look at life in the classroom from a new perspective. Participation in regional and state PSEA conventions, special speakers, iilms, and discussion groups aid prospective teachers in their understanding of how to become better equipped to meet children with different backgrounds and experiences. The Messiah College chapter seeks to establish methods of correlating Christian values with goals of education. An exciting atmosphere prevailed as students hypocritically cleaned their rooms to prepare for families and friends to visit. For the returning alumni, Homecoming created nostalgic feelings as they visited familiar dorm rooms and reminisced how things used to be. Students and alumni became involved in the week-end activities and soon were absorbed in the college atmosphere. Activities began Friday night with the Founders, Fellowship Dinner, and an address by our new Dean of the College. Saturday was filled with the excitement of soccer in-the-rain when our team tied Shippensburg, a Homecoming Buffet Dinner where the student-elected host and hostess of Homecoming welcomed alumni and students to get acquainted with each other, and ended with a Convocation Service. A large crowd gathered outside Woodlawn Womens' Residence for the Sunday afternoon dedication, after which the dorms were opened for visitors. This year the Music Department has expanded to include a four-year music education major. This has facilitated the development of a more extensive music program. New courses added to the curriculum and an addition of two full-time and two part-time faculty members helped to give the students a wider course selection. Vocal groups involved many students of the college. Polyphonic Choir, comprised of sixteen voices, was under the direction of Dr. Ronald Sider. Together with Choral Society, they presented two Christmas concerts. Both Choral Society, directed by Mr. Ronald Miller, and Polyphonic Choir gave programs to the churches in the surrounding areas through the year. Chapel Choir and numerous girls, trios and male quartets were organized and sang at various times throughout the school year. String Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Pep Band were the major instrumental groups involving students and their talents. String Ensemble and Wind Ensemble each presented a fall concert. In addition, Wind Ensemble gave a spring concert and a pops concert. Pep Band, under the direction of Ben Stoner, provided support and enthusiasm at basketball games. Practice started in November under the coaching of Miss Garman. Aching muscles were the main complaints of the first few weeks as the girls dribbled, shot lay-ups, and ran hundreds of laps around the gym. Although the Falconettes were not always victorious, the combination of skill and many hours of practice made their season a good one. 2 - mil ti 'iss 9 Inc 4 le N ,, , Esther DCU' 9 R 5 VARSITY uAsKErnA1.L-Row ONE: ian Engle- Barb Snyiiivoz Janice B802 gf' Smith, Annelia Rorubaugh. After last year's 7-5 record, high hopes were held for the season. Thus, as early as February, baseball players could be found in the gym- nasium working on calisthenics states for se equipment, swinging Weighted bats, and tossing balls to each other. With this enthusiasm, Coach Tim Miller's accumulating experience, and a strong contingent of returning starters, the Falcons were ready to take on all opponents, including a trip to the southern veral pre-season games. . .Wa . ,, , , 'Q f ' ' 'fn 4 if at . f f- an ,aw-if ' ' 'ff-41 ,qw A -f , g , ,,,,, .Kb .a-, ' 1 f . 4? For most of us it was only' four Yeafs ago that we entered Messiah, inquisitive, anxious, and 3 little dizzy with excitement. For some of us college life was exactly what we had awaited- a whirl of activities and studies. For others it was not quite as glamorous as we had dreamed it would be-questions and challenges arose which we were not adequately prepared to meet. Consequently some of our personalities as seniors are little changed from what they were as freshmen. Others have broadened their horizons, and prepared themselves for future challenges so they will not be found defenseless again. It was a labyrinth of events which shaped our personalities. There were the socials where class spirit mellowed into Something soft and rich to be remembered years later-the moonlight reflected from the straw on an Amish hayride, the rip-roaring spirit of a carnival, tne human tug-of-war at a camp retreat. were the professors who stimulated our thoughts-thou h g ts which led to periods of depression uncertainty, but ultimate reconc'l' ' There nation. There were the a d ' ' ca emic geniuses in Morris Book and Betty Reed, the athletic stars in John enn Treece. There were many more events, events unique to the individuals which formed and molded the person l' a ity and ultimately the life of each Senior. Spurrier and Gl Now the ti individuals to prove the strength of the lives which have been molded. Each one of us will go from Messiah to influence those with whom we live and work. More mature, less vivacious, we returned to pursue our majors with renewed interest. The required general courses of our freshman and sophomore years were completed and we began to get a glimpse into the vast and challenging futures of our own major interests. We struggled over popcorn stands and Saturday workdays for money for the Jr.-Sr. banquet. We suddenly realized the importance and meaning of grade-point averages and their relation to our chances for student-teaching. We further explored Harrisburg and near-by colleges, meeting new and challenging people and ideas. We began to find ourselves and to look forward to the final year before graduation and a degree. We had left the whirl of the freshman year, and leaving it we passed its flush and excitement on to the incoming frosh. It is all a dream now which passes vaguely across our memories. As sophomores we have shared our love of fun through coffee houses, happenings, and just through our daily efforts to be a little friendlier. We have shared our problems and become stronger through mutual understanding. We are more adept and informed now, but we still have two years hovering over us and a lot of unanswered questions. FRESHMEN Vivacious, blindly excited, we bounded onto the Messiah Campus bringing with us Sunday afternoon football games, the excitement of dating, and fresh and rejuvenating ideas. We were met by unfamiliar faces and names, rules and standards, the havoc of registration and initiation, and the challenge of learning. With a headlong plunge we began our studies expecting enlightenment which would climax with our names under the limelight of Dean's List. Many of us were disappointed. But it was a year of experience-of learning to live with other people, to be more considerate of others, to respect the viewpoint alien to one's own, of learning to be independent and to accept defeat and success in stride. It was a year of intangible experiences, unmeasurable by grade averages-experiences which will only be fully valued in the future. 'S ,U I 'Y .PK ff? Since then many have come and scattered around the world in many fields of endeavor. Some have returned to leadership roles of Messiah College itself. Today some of you are returning as second generation students to the school your parents loved. T . . . . he college has grown greatly in size, number of buildings and people since those earlier years. But still I am impressed by you, the students, by YOUI' war th ' ' m , sincerity and eagerness to attack the problems of today and by the evi- dences of your convictions. It is my hope that you will, in the spirit of the founding Fathers of your alma mat k ' ' er, eep that trust given you and that you will pass the same on to succeeding generations. The pleasure was mine t h o s are in a small way of making this a photographic memory of your friends at Messiah College.
