Avw Elflnm Beside the Timeless ripples of the sparkling Min- nemingo there stands a symbol of assiduous prepa- ration and dynamic force. The chapel steeple, a bold white protrusion into an infinite universe, sug- gests a stable growth and a devoted and directed proiection into the vastness of men's dreams. lt sym- bolizes sharp passage through the clouds of despair and the shadows of anxiety. Breakthrough - the symbol of forceful eruption from limited surroundings into unlimited potentialities . . .a line of progress, piercing the barriers thrown be- fore it, breaking through the suffocating shadows into the freedom of dawn . . . an eager projection into the intinitude of the future, fed by the energies of relentless sacrifice. A college awakes to a new day. The great barrier of academic recognition has been shattered. Beyond the satisfying present, however, lies a vast, limitless unknown. As in the past, we must respond to the future with enthusiasm and dedication. Sensitive to the basic purposes and ideals of the college and challenged by the demands of society, Messiah Col- lege will continue its breakthrough into the excite- ment of the new era. ALVERA HERSHEY busily takes notes while Dr. Lee Chestnut lectures in a Science Seminar. Thy calling to fulfil, Oh! may it all my powers engage . . . Messiah College aims to train young people to face the world with conhdence in their ability and in their Master. Increasingly, our students have sought to combine intel- lectual inquiry with the Christian perspective. Many influences have deepened and broadened the outlook of the college. As part of this endeavor to keep pace with the increasing desire for knowledge, Messiah College has not only expanded the physical plant of the campus, but also increased the number of fully qualified faculty members. But the growth of Messiah College will not stop here. There are other barriers we must pass if we would serve the present age. CONFERRING with Dr. Wittlinger after a United States History lecture are David Willard and Lucille Wolgemuth. AHA! exclciims Stun Eshelmdn. B The division of Language, Literature, and Fine Arts offers two maiors, one in English and one in Sacred Music. The English maior has been greatly strengthened by recent developments both in curriculum planning and in library. A clarification of the obiectives of the English major estab- lished the approach to an intensive curriculum study under- taken by the Division this year. Five courses which survey the historical development of English literature have been arranged as the central core of the English major. Other essential courses have been retained with little change. In the future, courses will be added to allow the student to pursue his interests further in such fields as the English literary masters, literary types, and European literary backgrounds. The English literature collection of the library has wit- nessed a great expansion. Emphasis has been placed on the acquisition of critical editions of the complete works of the great English authors, and on a good representation of critical studies. Gifts specifically designated for the purpose have made possible the growth .of an outstanding collection of books on Milton. ln the Music department important developments have been the organization of sa band and the installation of a pipe organ in Hill View. To Professor Miller must go much of the credit for the tradition of fine music which Messiah College has maintained for so many years. Next year his responsibilities as Director of the Department of Music will be assumed by Mr. Ronald Sider who returns after a leave of absence for doctoral study. ln addition to the two maiors, the division offers a minor in speech, a program initiated in 1962. Pro- gress toward this obiective is evidenced by significant expansion of the history book collection in the library, by restatement of the major requirements to assure more advanced course depth and better distribution of pre- scribed courses, and by the provision for more adequate options for depth study in United States and European history, as well as in other area studies. ' An expansion of teacher personnel paralleled the above development. A second professional historian came to the faculty in l962, and a third ioined the group for the current college year. The division also concerned itself recently with the development of the other social science disciplines. Li- brary development and curriculum enrichment have gone forward in all areas. Offerings in psychology. were expanded in l962 to provide a minor in the field. This development was facilitated by the addition of a new faculty member trained in psychology and counselling. The curriculum has been further enriched by the addi- tion of a new depth study in economics, pOliTiCGl science, and sociology. ,. DR. Within the past two years all of the full-time faculty in the division have either completed advanced degrees, taken acldi- tional work toward a doctorate, attended summer institutes, or participated in a summer research program. The general outlook of the faculty is one of alertness to current issues in their respec- tive disciplines. The first divisional major was biology. During the I96I-62 year a major in chemistry was implemented, and a major in mathe- matics was introduced in the I963-64 school year. An honors program was added to the curriculum in I962-63. In this program students with high academic potential and perfor- mance are permitted to do independent research under the direc- tion of an adviser. This is the second year for the Science Seminar. Weekly meet- ings give opportunity for the presentation of papers by stuClenTS and faculty. Most presentations deal with topics of current in- terest or topics which are not normally dealt with in the class- room. Two important outcomes have been noted: CID a breadth Of understanding through the exchange of ideas, particularly among the several sciences, and C25 the development of a closer relation- ship between the students and faculty. Prior to I962 the equipment and facilities in biology WSF? modernized and expanded. During the past two years the phySl- cal science facilities and equipment have been upgraded to accommodate high level performance in these areas. PRGF. The periodic student recitals al- lowed the students in music to exhibit their training. An expanded orchestra, aided by the influx of many freshman members, presented several concerts on the campus. Finally, the Grantham Oratorio Society, under the able direction of Earl Miller, presented Handel's Messiah in the spring. WH- 2 6. At the core ot the spiritual emphasis at Messiah College is the call to a commitment of faith in Jesus Christ. Even deeper than this is the command to serve our Lord. The college motto, Christ Pre- eminent, is brought home forcefully to the students, through the regular revival services, missionary conferences, chapel periods, prayer meetings and special days of prayer which are an important part of a year at Messiah College. The founTain has long sTood as a familiar symbol of Messiah College. To Those who have grown To love our College, This founTain has symbolized The source of all our wisdom, God. JusT as The Tounfain flows on quieTly and conTinuously, so The geTTing of wisdom musT be a process of unfailing efforr. ln our desire To achieve a greaTer individual academic excellence, we encounTer problems which someTimes appear insurmounTable. Success comes only afTer we have faced These issues fearlessly and have broken Through inTo a broader area of undersTanding. This achievemenT resembles The force and power wiTh which The founfain sends inTo The air iTs clear jeT of wafer. Many Times we are spurred on To greaTer achievemenT by The leadership given by our elders. AT Times The Torch of leadership is passed from one hand To anoTher. We are graTeful for Those who, afTer serving so well for many years leave behind Them a disTincTive TradiTion of academic excellence and ChrisTian characferz Professor Earl Miller, who reTires as head of The music deparTmenT, and Mrs. Frances SmiTh, who reTires from her Dean of Women posT. To Them, Clarion '64 wishes To express spe- cial recogniTion. So iT is ThaT we musT face life: wiTh a deTerminaTion and vision To overcome all The barriers To our ChrisTian growTh sTanding before us. The mighTy example of a dedicaTed college and dynamic leadership poinTs The way To our individual responsibiliTy as ChrisTians. WiTh ST.
