'Madaqe THE BASES OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Observation confirms the truth of St. Paul's statement that those who are without God are also without hope. The cynicism and pessimism of atheism and agnosticism is its own condemnation. Is it too much to hope that the plight of many who have politely bowed God out of the universe, will compel them to return to the conclusion of the philosopher Kantgthe universe demands Cod? God has revealed Himself to men through a living personality-Christ, and by written revelation-the Bible. These constitute the bases for Christian education. The Bible and Christ reveal to us the origin and meaning of life, the true end of life, and how to be made adequate for life. Edwin Lewis in 'lThe Christian Manifesto says to the shame of modern Chris- tians that when facing forms of thought antagonistic to the meaning and purpose of Christianity, they have weakly surrendered. Nowhere has that surrender been more marked than in the field of education. Faced with the assertion or implication that it is not intellectually respectable to believe in revealed religion they falter and apologize-very fearful of being considered ignorant. America pushed the Bible out of the public school because of her passion for democracy. The rights of the minority had to be respected so the Bible and religious instruction had to go. Church schools and colleges have pushed the Bible out because of their passion for recognition and accreditment. Their curriculum, program and product in all too many cases has lost all distinguishing marks. Life situation, edu- cation. and a child-centered religious education have pushed absolute truth and the Bible into discard. Against this background and in this setting lVIessiah Bible College and institu- tions with similar ideals and purposes fill a challenging need. Ulf the foundations be clestroyeclf then what? But the Mfounclation of God standeth suref' 'G0ther foundation can no man lay than that which is laid which is ,lesus Christ? Therefore in our principles and in our practice we recognize the matchless per- sonality of Jesus Christ, the worldis greatest teacher-the Son of Cod. Therefore, in our curriculum and in our college consciousness we place the Bible, the written revelation of Cod, as fundamentally essential. These are the bases of education at Messiah Bible College. We welcome all that is new upon its own merit. We aim to build upon this foundation-Christ and the Bible-that which will stand forever.
