To one who for ilze past six years by his zuztiring eforts and ill'lJrlill,UiJl6 contributions has led our Col- lege steadily forward . . . to one who represents for ns in o most iniinmre capacity the perfection of our Christian ideals and has ever been devoted to the cause of Christian Iiklzuraztion . . . to the President of Wlessifziz Bible College . . . we sincerely dedicate this book. 'Madaqe THE BASES OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Observation confirms the truth of St. Paul's statement that those who are without God are also without hope. The cynicism and pessimism of atheism and agnosticism is its own condemnation. Is it too much to hope that the plight of many who have politely bowed God out of the universe, will compel them to return to the conclusion of the philosopher Kantgthe universe demands Cod? God has revealed Himself to men through a living personality-Christ, and by written revelation-the Bible. These constitute the bases for Christian education. The Bible and Christ reveal to us the origin and meaning of life, the true end of life, and how to be made adequate for life. Edwin Lewis in 'lThe Christian Manifesto says to the shame of modern Chris- tians that when facing forms of thought antagonistic to the meaning and purpose of Christianity, they have weakly surrendered. Nowhere has that surrender been more marked than in the field of education. Faced with the assertion or implication that it is not intellectually respectable to believe in revealed religion they falter and apologize-very fearful of being considered ignorant. America pushed the Bible out of the public school because of her passion for democracy. The rights of the minority had to be respected so the Bible and religious instruction had to go. Church schools and colleges have pushed the Bible out because of their passion for recognition and accreditment. Their curriculum, program and product in all too many cases has lost all distinguishing marks. Life situation, edu- cation. and a child-centered religious education have pushed absolute truth and the Bible into discard. Against this background and in this setting lVIessiah Bible College and institu- tions with similar ideals and purposes fill a challenging need. Ulf the foundations be clestroyeclf then what? But the Mfounclation of God standeth suref' 'G0ther foundation can no man lay than that which is laid which is ,lesus Christ? Therefore in our principles and in our practice we recognize the matchless per- sonality of Jesus Christ, the worldis greatest teacher-the Son of Cod. Therefore, in our curriculum and in our college consciousness we place the Bible, the written revelation of Cod, as fundamentally essential. These are the bases of education at Messiah Bible College. We welcome all that is new upon its own merit. We aim to build upon this foundation-Christ and the Bible-that which will stand forever. For this, we are indebted to a concerned faculty member, and efficient advisor, Miss Ruth Taylor. We are indeed sorry that the picture of one of our number, Robert Eltherington. cannot appear with our group. His stay with us we appreciated very much and re- gretted that he had to be absent from us for a portion of the year. While the first semesteris activities of the organization were somewhat limited, with the coming of the second semester, the students awakened to the need of several changes. Together we made plans for the spending of Sunday afternoons in helpful lines of Christian entertainment. With l'lOllCSt endeavor and common loyalty, students co- operated in organizing and maintaining a system of patrols to the end that our traffic on the halls might he more orderly and the common safety greater. These few examples point out the good will of our ever-growing student group and the practical leadership of its ollicers. May Hapantes in years to come continue to function for the benefit of our Col- lege and the training of our awakening youth as it has done this year. ' yefhcle The Missionary Circle has had a vital part in stimulating the missionary spirit at Messiah Bible College. At its weekly meetings an effort has been made to have speakers who are in active Christian service. The prayer bands that this organization maintains have been a means of keeping us in close touch with God and have brought us to a fuller realization that He does answer united prayer. The Correspondence Committee, which is a part of the Missionary Circle, has also helped to create an interest in foreign and home missions. This is done by the reading of letters which the committee has received direct from the missions. IL is the privilege of the Gospel Team which functions under Missionary Circle, to spread the Hgood tidingsn to the nearby communities. It has been our privilege to Hll ten regular appointments each month beside a number of special programs. This work is carried on by approximately thirty young people definitely interested in Christian service. Being divided into four groups with a leader for each, it did not place too heavy a responsibility on any one person. We endeavor to fulfill Christ's command by conducting services that make the way of salvation plain and draw those already in the Way nearer to their Creator. Joy, ministered to us dur- ing the fall revival meetings. His kindly manner and gentle voice endeared him to the hearts of the student body, and as a result of his Cod-blessed ministry souls were inspired to yield their lives in consecration to God. The keen understanding of youth and a passionate desire to see them won for Christ, characterized our Vifinter evangelist, Bish. Henry Schneider, of Merrill. Mich. nService and Love were the keynotes of his life and ministry to us and linked with these this humble servant of God painted for us the Suffering Savior, and His redemptive power. He lives long in our memories for our spiritual lives have been deepened through his ministry. As students we look forward for each of these two revivals, for during these weeks we live in an atmosphere which refreshes and feeds our spiritual lives. These are green spots in the lives of every one on the campus. THE 1940 CLARION FORTY-FOUR ALBERT WAGNER, Plz.iladelph,ia, Pa. M. B. C. 1938 Houghton College A.
