F.H.A., which stands for Future Homemakers of America, is a very active organization all over the United States. Students in H.E.C.E. and P.E.L.E. make up part of F.H.A., although any homemaking student may be in it. F.H.A. had a Christmas project that worked out very well. The F.H.A. group called the Mesquite Social Services to request a group project. The F.H.A. students were given the name of a family in need. This family had suffered a terrible tragedy last November. The 26 year old father had died of a heart at- tack, leaving his wife with three young daughters. The daughters were Christie - eight, Deana - three, and Lisa - 11 months. The family had moved from Louisiana to Texas to live with the chiIdren's grandmother. The F.H.A. members collected donations of clothing and money for the family. The money was used to buy the children presents. The mother later sent a letter of appreciation to the M.H.S. Homemaking Department, enclosed were pictures showing how happy the children were while opening their presents. The F.H.A. had a project in January for Cystic Fibrosis, which is the disease that affects the digestive system and the lungs. This disease is the number one genetic killer of children and young adults. F.H,A. received donations for the research into the carriers of this disease. They had hoped to reach 1,000 in donations. They ended up with over S 100.00 lf a person donated a dollar or more, they were to put their name on a card and give it back to the F.H.A. Person. On Wednesday, February 8, 1984, there was a balloon lift off for Cystic Each card was tied to a separate helium balloon and sent up. Balloons landed all over Texas and also other states. The cards were then sent back to M.H.S. with the finders name, address, and where the card was found. This was an interesting and helpful project. Other activities that F.H.A. had were: October 17, 1983, a Pot Luck Supper and Installation, February 6th-10th, the National F.H.A.fH.E.R.O.
