One of the most outstanding repre- sentatives in the history of Mesquite High School Music Department has been David Polk. He began his interest in music at the early age of three, when he received his first drum set. David began studying percussion privately at the age of six. Throughout his high school years David's many hours of study and practice have earned him numerous awards and recognitions. As a freshman he was a member of All-Region Band and All-Region choir. For the next two years he earned a position in All-Region Band, All-Region Choir, and All-Region Orchestra, qualifying for Area in all three his junior year. This was an accomplishment never acquired before at Mesquite High School. His junior year he achieved the high ranking of a member of the All-State Band, performing on typani. David's senior year he was a member of All-Region Band and All-Region Orchestra and he received the ultimate honor as the best high school typani player in the state of Texas by earning first chair in the All-State Band. During his stay at Mesquite High School, David earned six first-division medals in percussion at region Solo, and Ensemble contest and three gold medals at the state contest. David was section leader of the Mighty Maroon Drum Corps for four years. He was also a member of the Dallas Youth Symphony, Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, Sky Riders Drum and Bugle Corps, Jazz Lab, Kantorei, Contempo, and Chorale. He had a leading role in the musical Carousel,' and was a soloist at numerous performances. David will be a percussion major at Texas Tech, with education emphasis. N-1? ii Thomas Swanson, a 6 ' 4 senior, led our Skeeters to a great basketball season. Thomas 5,2-V if 'lv led the team in scoring, averaging 14 points per game. Besides leading in scores he also led in rebounding and field goal percentage. Thomas was on varsity for two years and was captain his senior year. As Thomas left M.H.S. his last words to the ..l.V. and Freshman players were, Stick with it and don't give upl Just as he never gave up. He's improved greatly since last year. His at- titude provides good leadership for our team, he's really an all-around playerl Coach Hall said. This improvement helped Tom make the All-Star Tournament in Duncanville this past year. Also, Thomas has received letters from many colleges, but hasn't made up his mind to where he would like to continue his future. SeHlOl'S 29 1
