We, the class of'56, dedicate this edition of our yearbook to Mrs. Raymond Space and Mr. Edward Sebastianelli. To our most beloved teachers and advisors who have been so pa- tient with us for the past three years and have helped us in every way they possibly could to solve our many problems. 54 ma Wafer Oh, the years that are gone have been happy, And the years yet to come but a dream, Yet the friendships we formed here together Will be sweet as we sail down life's stream. May the lessons we've learned from our childhood Guide us all through the day and the night And in dream days to come, we'll be proud, every one, As we sing to our heart's delight: Here is to our Alma Materl Purple and white our hearts enfoldl For the years we spent together In our memory'll ne'er grow old. It requires the mastery of those things which the vast major- ity of people call the fundamen- A, As members of the graduating class of '56 you go into the world to take your places as citizens of a proud nation. You have received the best in- struction and training available. Upon your shoulders will fall the duties of citizenship. What you accomplish for yourselves and your country will depend upon each of you. It is not enough that you, as citizens of a freedom- loving coun- try, should protect just your own personal gains and libertiesg you must be strong and united to pro- mote peace and prosperity through- out the world. Your country's true strength lies in the character of her citizens. You, the citizens of to- morrow, must not betray the trust that has been invested in you. tals. But there are many other things which you must learn that are equally fundamental. These things include: Playing fairly and being a good sport. Knowing how and where to find facts you need to know whenyou need to know them. Being a good citizen of the place where you happen to be. Being self-reliant: as someone has said. Walk your own path--do not be a carbon copy of anyone. I trust that the Class of '56 will prove that they have mastered all of these fundamentals. MR. MERRITT M. LIGHT, Principal MRS. MORAN VIRGINIA LAFRANCE VIRGINIA MCGAVIN Qsenzbz' jlglsfofy On September 3, 1952, our class entered the doors of Meshoppen High School to begin our four years of high school. We assembled in room 25 with Mr. VanLieu as our home room teacher. As roll was taken we found thirty-five members in the class, twenty coming from the Center, thirteen from Meshoppen, one from Jessup, and one from Tunkhannock. The following officers were elected: President. Ben Cole, Vice President, Harold Craigeg Secretary, John Hardingg Historian, Raymond Manning, Treas urer, Bill Carter. After Mr. VanLieu left us in October to teach in New Jersey, Mr. Heinrich and Mr. Marhafka were our home room teachers. During our freshman year two members of our class left us: Joan Ladner, who moved to Tunkhannock, and Carl Hoffman. In September 1953, we began our sophomore year. Looking around we found one member of our class missing, Ellen Kocher, who had moved to Lawton, but we were happy to welcome Phyllis Hampsey in her place. We assembled in room 22 and were very happy to have Mrs. Space as our class advisor. The following officers were elec- ted: President, Sherry Buttonp Vice President, John Hardingg Treasurer, Regina Bankog Secretary, Raymond Manning, Historian, Harold Craigeg Representatives, Buddy Lutz and Evelyn Smith. This year we picked our class motto, Always Travel In High: Never Shift Gears g our flower, Lily of the Valleyg and our colors, Green and White. Before our sophomore year came to a close five of our members left: Sherry Button, who got married, Duane Root, Clarence Marbaker, Shirley Teetsel, and Margaret Faux. During the year we had two class parties. We entered our junior year in room 22 with Mrs. Space again our advisor. As we looked over our classmates, we found that we had lost one of our members, Timothy Sheldon, who had gone to Staunton Military Instituteg but we were very happy to wel- come four new members to our classy Runyon Purdy from Wyalusing, Esther Carter, Daniel Newhart, and Harlan Sherwood from West Auburn, this giving us a total of thirty-two. The following officers were elected: President, John Harding, Vice Pres- ident, Raymond Manningg Treasurer, Phyllis Hampseyg Secretary, Regina Bankog His- torian, Arlene Cainesg Representatives, Evelyn Smith and Bill Carter. At last our long awaited day came when we ordered our class rings. We were all very pleased when they arrived in time for Christmas. During our junior year four members of our class left us: Alberta Truesdale, who moved to Vestalg Janet Peet and Charlotte Rogers, who got marriedg and Daniel Newhart. We had a Halloween Party which was the big- gest success ever. In April we presented our play, The Big Blow-Up, showing our outstanding dramatic talent. Our other money making projects for the year were a raffle and magazine campaign which were both very profitable. On May 7, the annual Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the South Auburn Grange Hall which proved to be a memorable evening for all of us. On Some Enchanted Evening in May we had our annual Junior-Senior Prom in the Meshoppen Gym. Through these activities and a few class parties we really had a wonderful year. It was on August 29, 1955, that twenty-nine thoughtful but happy seniors en- tered Meshoppen High for the last of their twelve years. Among those were, Shirley Teetsel, who came back from Tunkhannock High School and John Barnes. We were certainly very happy to find Mrs. Space, once again, as our class advisor. The fol- lowing officers were elected: President, Raymond Manning: Honorary President, John Barnesg Vice President, Evelyn Pointekg Treasurer, Phyllis Hampseyg Secretary, Regina Bankog Historian, Ruth Ann Love, Representatives, Bill Carter and Evelyn Smith. On October 20 and 21 we presented our play, A Feudin' Over Yonder, which filled the house for the three performances. The closing highlights of our year were: Class Night, May 115 the Prom, May 185 Baccalaureate Service in St. Joachims Roman Catholic Church, May 20g and our long awaited, COMMENCEMENT, May 25. Then came OUR TRIP T0 WASHINGTON, AND THUS ON INTO OUR FUTURE. As you climb the hills of the coming years, May you travel in high and never shift gears, With plenty of spark and never a knock, And a joyfilling station in every block.
