KKKKXKXKYFK TX Page 28-Fall-Sports Expect the unexpected is an ap- propriate phase for the 1973 Varsity Football team. The year was one of extreme change. Included in this change were upset victories, a hu- miliating loss to Westwood, and a change in team philosophy: playing football for fun. This new philoso- phy relieved the rabbit team of un- necessary pressure and enabled them to play their best football. This year's Jackrabbit team ex- celled greatly in the area of indi- viduality. Those boys leading the team in these areas before the league games started were, Kim Kerstetter, first in rushing with 66 attempts, a total of 347 yards, and an average of 5.3 yards per carry. Cary Palmer with his outstanding passing ability, had 52 completions, 95 attempts, and a total of 867 yards. ln pass receiving, Mickey Hatcher was way out in front with 29 passes received for a total of 592 yards. Leading the team with scor- ing points were Kerstetter, 36, Hat- cher next, with 30, and Rod Smith, also on top with 24 points. The 1973 Mesa High Jackrabbits were a team to be extremely proud of. Other than their excellent playing ability, the team's spirit and drive was one of which will be remembered for a longtime.
