MAssAl:HusE'r15 U2l35 F May 27, 1967 My dear Father McQuader Twenty years have come and gone since the founding of Merrimack College. During all that time this higher institution of learning has surpassed the fondest expectations of those of us who were identified with it since the days when it was only a dream. You and I can recall its first beginnings: the pur- chase of the land, the appeal for funds, the breaking of ground for the first building, the first entrance class and the first com ence- ment exercises. I can go back further and recall that on becoming Archbishop of Boston, about twenty-three years ago, I was impressed by the great need of another college under church-related auspices. Contacts were made with practically every teaching order of men in the Church in the United States, hoping that some group would be interested. All declined our invitation to build and staff a college with the assurance of our aid within the Archdiocese of Boston, on the grounds that they had no sufficient personnel. There was one excep- tion, the Order of Saint Augustine. Despite the demands from other institutions your confreres graciously responded. All agreed that the new institution should be in the area of Greater Lawrence where the Augustinian Fathers were well known and loved. This is the background of all the Hfirstn in the history of Merrimack that we can recall on this twentieth anniversary. You became the first President of the College. You had the responsibility, with the aid of your fellow religious and lay mem- bers of the faculty, of leading the institution into the unchartered' territory of the future. I deem it a great honor to congratulate you for your tireless efforts over the past two decades. All others who have worked with you or under you merit also a tribute of praise on this happy anniversary. There is no need of me narrating the various phases of the growth and development of the College. They are well known by you, the administrators, the faculty members, the alumni, the friends and benefactors of Merrimack College. Private colleges today are faced with many problems. The charity dollar that helps to maintain them cannot compete with the tax dollar invested in State Universities. But there is a great need for these private colleges and those identified with the business, professional and industrial world should do everything within their power to encourage these private colleges to meet the educational demands of modern times. G overnments, local and national, should do likewise. A college education is costly but it must be made available to all who qualify for it. I pray that in honor of the twentieth anniversary of Merrimack benefactors shall be prompted to come forth and give generously to this young college. Older institutions have many sources of aid, in addition to a large alumni. Youthful Merrimack is still struggling to complete its necessary facilities. It deserves to be helped by those who admire the Augustinians for their courage in starting a new college only two decades ago, and by those who are grateful to Merrimack for making higher education possible in a sector of the Archdiocese of Boston where a college was greatly needed. Tuitions alone cannot maintain a college. Additional aid must come from people and sources capable of giving financial assistance. This is a good time for all of us to help Merrimack. I know that you will find this year's book completely different from those of past years. This is the first year that we have had William I. Keller Inc. of Buffalo, N.Y. This company has enabled the yearbook staff to employ new techniques. This has been the first year that color has been employed to such a great extent. This has been the first year that the cover has been changed. This has been the first year that we have done our own layouts. All the changes that you see in this year's book has been done after careful consideration by the staff.
