had never known many Augustinians before I came to Merrimack College. I had never known the warmth. the understanding, the helpfulness that emanated from these men dedicated to God, these men whose entire lives are given to us. And the lay faculty — those learned men who have come from far and near to instruct us, to confer upon us some small parcel of their knowledge. As I sit here, I can still see the green ties on Saint Patricks Day, I can hear the Priests cheer at a basketball game and the Deans quiet hello. I can ' hear a shout for a field goal, and the expounding upon the merits of Teddy Roosevelt or Teddy Williams. These men, who wear the varied, brilliant-colored degrees from universities the world over, were our guides, our inspirations, through the years that we spent at Merrimack. They thundered at us the principles which underlie our lives and our faith. They encouraged us to ‘ Tolle lege ” — ‘ Take up and read.” We can only pray that we will one day show ourselves worthy of the hours that they have spent in trying to impart to us their wealth of knowledge.
