The artes Ubcralcs come from the Imperial Roman idea of the knowledge that must be imparted to free citizens in order to equip them to exercise the highest functions of society. The student is led to an understanding of his dignity as an indi- vidual and of his responsibility as a member of society. He is taught to .think clearly, logically, comprehensively, to e.xamine facts under the light of true reason, and to act according to ethical principles. All the glories of the past and of this twentieth century are his for the full life if, by self-discipline of hard work and moral courage, he will translate this knowledge into high and noble action.
