Communication and the ability to understand one another is a growing concern for successful business, politi- cal as well as for personal reasons. The Foreign Language Department strives for students’ mastery of a particular language, through reading, writing and conversation. Offered to students was Spanish, German and French, ranging from first to fourth year. Com- prehension and pronounciation are stressed, and later, novels and in-depth cultural reports are done. For the col- legebound or just interested student, the Foreign Language courses repre- sent a good background which can prove to be an asset in anyone’s future career. 26 Foreign Language

Class Discussions Highlight Social Studies Social Studies is a broad field that offers many opportunities for growth. And our Social Studies Department is no exception. Besides the required U.S. History, Government and Econ classes, there were courses which delve deeper in historic and social events. Dis- cussions urging class participation have replaced demanding names and dates. Instead, instructors placed the accent on concepts and ideas, and thus, making history more interesting for students. Some more specified classes included Values and Issues, History of War and Psychology. Such courses took a closer look at the development of men and nations. So no matter where the questions came from, the is- sue could find answers in the Social Studies Department. Upper right: Taking a breather after Mr. Metcalfs exam, these Juniors make the most of their free time. Middle left: Mr. Johnson’s explanations seem very intriguing to these attentive Sociology students. Above right: “Oh no, not a quiz!
