It Was All-Conference By winning five of the nine confer- ence sports, Merrillville captured the all-conference trophy for the 1977-78 school term. The traveling trophy, which is sponsored by the Duneland Confer- ence, includes the following sports: cross country, tennis, football, wres- tling, basketball swimming, track, baseball and golf. Merrillville won: Football, Coach Ken Haupt; Wrestling, Coach Tom Cameron; Basketball, Coach Jim Ver- million; Swimming, Coach Lee McCloud; and Baseball, Coach William Metcalf in a tie with LaPorte. Coach Banas leads team to 12-6 season Overall the 1977 boys tennis team finished up with a 12-6 record and third place finish in the Duneland con- ference with a 7-5 mark. Led by the team MVP, Jeff Markle, the netters were 1-1 before going on to a four match winning streak, the longest of the season. Helping Markle improve the record over last year were under- classmen Mark Mumaw, voted most improved by his teammates, and the doubles team of Andy and Todd Spear.
