Volleyers renewed Sectional title The 1977 Volleyball team suc- ceeded in winning the IHSAA sectio- nal title for the second consecutive year under Ms. Joanne Schafer. The Pi- rates compiled a 10-9 dual meet record including an impressive 5-1 conference record, their only loss to conference champions, La Porte. The team advanced to the Region- al by beating Lake Station and Gary Roosevelt in the Merrillville Sectional. In the regionals they were defeated by Hammond Morton. Golfers finish fifth in conference The girls’ golf team under the direc- tion of Mr. and Mrs. Wiles, wound up with a 4-12 season record and fifth in the Duneland Conference. After win- ning the opening match to Knox, the girls then lost four in a row only to bounce back against conference rival, Chesterton. The other highlights of the season were the matches against M.C. Marquette and against Hobart where the girls kept their scores low enough to come out ahead. Julie Wallin went on to win the duneland conference award. At the awards banquet, Karen Ius- sig and Cheryl Sweat both received the best mental attitude award while Kathy Jannasch was presented with the low medalist award and Kari Anderson was voted most improved. Harriers struggle to 4-6 season Under the direction of fourth year Varsity Coach, Mike Miller, the Pirate harriers led by seven senior lettermen finished with a 4-6 dual meet record. The Bucs posted their first dual meet victory over Wirt but saw no vic- tories in the Duneland Conference. They won some late meets to bring their season mark to 4-6, then finished sixth in the conference meet and eighth in the sectionals.
