MERRILLVUE 1974 Printed by students of Merrillville High School Opening 1 I AM ME. I take pride in the fact that I am totally different from anyone else in the world. I ' m not super special, but I ' ve learned to take what I have and work from there. 2 Opening I HAVE MY OWN values, beliefs, and ideas. I want to do what I want to do and I want to be what I want to be. 4 Opening Opening 5 6 Opening WHAT KIND OF PERSON AM I? Am I good? Am I kind? Am I honest? Am I loving? Do I have talents? Judge me on these things; but, that I am a teenager tells you so little. MHS ..... THAT ' S MY SCHOOL. Do I say it with pride? Well, sometimes. We have the new auditorium and swimming pool. I think this school is the only one in the area that comes complete with buckets in the halls for rainy days. 8 Opening DOflRST «■ i s’ie • V PH «DFhEE Opening 9 — THE INNER ATMOSPHERE of the school portrays a constant struggle. Do we demand too much freedom and complain when we receive half as much as we wanted? Is that apathy, or is it growing up? Opening 1 1 12 Opening THERE ARE THOSE WITHOUT purpose. There are those who merely want diplomas. There are those with a purpose. There is a secret to finding the purpose. I just wish someone would tell what it is, to make it easier for us to find the purpose. Opening I { I LOOK AT M Y LITTLE BROTHERS with hope. Hope that they will find and have a purpose. How important it is that they should walk this age-old path with some purpose that they can call their own. LOWER RIGHT: Subtle music cast a romantic at- mosphere for couples dancing. LOWER CENTER: A successful Grand March fol- lowed the announcement of King and Queen. 20 Prom Some Enchanted Evening Couples danced to soft music at the Junior Prom of 1972-1973, being held for the first time away from school. The prom was presented by the Class of 1974 at the Creek Orthodox Hall, break- ing the usual tradition of holding prom in the high school gymnasium. The theme, Some Enchanted Evening was cho- sen by the juniors and was carried out by deco- rations of flower-covered pillars with a water fountain surrounded by a trinkling river with gatherings of lily pads. The high point of the evening came when prom royalty gathered on the stage to await the an- nouncement of King and Queen. Last year ' s Prom King Dan Absher crowned a surprised Perry Taber and a beaming Cay Peters as King and Queen of the Junior Prom. The couple then led the Grand March around the ballroom. Slowly, the dance began to break up to head for the Post-Prom Party sponsored by the P.T.O. Most prom-goers were up until 4:30 a.m. to fin- ish the not-to-be-forgotten weekend with a cozy picnic at a state park. One of these changes was Community In- volvement Day. This was a day to re- place the traditional open house. ' ' On Community Involvement Day, some adults came to school for stu- dents and resembled sophomores on their first day of high school. They needed assistance with lockers and other everyday tasks. As for the fac- ulty, they conducted classes as al- ways, some even going ahead with scheduled tests. UPPER LEFT: Detailed instructions are given by Mike Luptak to Mr. Maresko. Community Involvement Day 23 - A Football Memory highlighted season An excellent football season set the mood for the homecoming dance. The parade, powder puff game. Bonfire and our victory over Lake Central were all in the past, but still fresh in our minds. Free Verse, the band who entertained, put the finishing touches on the dance as couples danced the night away and the homecoming festivities drew to a dose. ' V - Juniors placed first in homecoming parade The night before the parade is always most hectic around midnight. It seems as if the float will never get done and all nerves are at the breaking point. Everyone wishes that they would have cut out a few nights at Macs and helped more on the float. As pieces of the float are scattered about the floor, getting it together on time looks hopeless. Suddenly as if by magic all of the pieces assemble themselves and as you stand looking at the finished product you feel very proud. This year it was the junior class that felt the proudest of any. Their float, “Pirates Will Get A Head , won first place, and they found that all of their hard work was worth it. TOP LEFT: Adding finishing touches fo the first place junior float is Rick Talmadge. TOP CENTER: Working diligently on the senior float is Jim Perko. ABOVE: It takes group effort to get chicken wire stuffed, as shown by Joni Hansen, Kathy Na- dolski and Cindy Zimny. Powder puff practices seemed well worthwhile for the junior players as they beat the sophomores and dumped the senior girls. Excitement built for the homecoming game that was played on a chilly, but rewarding night. Jackie Smith was announced as the 1973-1974 home- coming Queen and Ken Dike received the honor of being named Mr. Football. It was the ladies ' turn as Turnabout, the annual dance where girls turn the tables and choose the boys, was held on a balmy December 1 in the school cafeteria. The Christmas mood was felt for the first time as couples danced to the theme “Starlight and Moon Shadow. It was the girl ' s turn as they searched about for dates and filled the cafeteria for a liberated evening. In the fall the Band, which is composed of 92 students this year, marched during all home football games. After football season was over the band practiced for their annual Christmas Concert. When basketball season started a group of band members were selected to be in Pep Band. They played at all home basketball games and a few swim meets. At this time the band also prepared for their winter concert. The work got a little tougher when they got ready for State Band Contest. This year the MHS Band was the best band in the State. The band also took a trip to St. Louis on a nation-wide scale which proved to be a new and useful experience, educa- tionally. At the end of the band year marching was again on the agenda for pa- rades with Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Homecoming. This year May 11, was designated Merrill- ville Band Day, which was a first for the growing town. An all German Band took the place of the Stage Band and it ' s achievements turned out to be successful. The biggest organization backing the band was Band Boosters who sponsored the sale of calendars and the Smorgasbords. The money was used to pay off the new uni- forms. Other people also helped out with donations for the trip to St. Louis and band members worked as slaves at the Police- man ' s Ball and at the )aycee Spaghetti Dinner. They sponsored the Homecoming Dance which was a success. The council attempted to gain longer lunch hours, soap in the restrooms and they gave money to the mentally retarded. Many hours were spent by a few people to organize the school ' s first Athletic Day (Olympiad), May 18, 1974. The Olympiad kept the council alive and tried to keep things happening. The semi-formal affair lasted but an hour, as the seniors were en- tertained by Dave Neal and awards were handed out to those who did not receive theirs on awards day. Cof- fee, milk and doughnuts made up the meal. After the traditional instructions con- cerning commencement, a mighty cheer led the way for the seniors to depart the building. After much horn blowing, some shouting, and many smiles, the seniors were gone, to re- turn only for Baccalaureate and Grad- uation exercises. Despite a broken leg and drums, they were well received. 48 Convocations Speakers helped to break monotony A guest speaker doesn ' t happen by MHS too often. Through the efforts of Mr. Nabhan and several other social studies teachers, we were able to have Mr. Floyd Fithian talk to history and government classes for a day. Mr. Fithian is a history professor at Purdue University. He is also very interested in politics and is- sues facing our government today. The fact that he has run for U.S. Congressman and will do so in No- vember again, shows his concern for better government. His talk centered on the three branches of govern- ment, their rolls historically as well as in present day and their ability to work together. There was also a question and answer period in which students asked a variety of questions. Another subject presented to MHS students through a special speaker was This Atomic World . Speakers Mike Vale, Cindy Kiburz, and Martin Neuliep recapped this class ' s years in high school and wished all the members well. For some members of the class of 1974, school was out forever. For some, school had just begun to get inter- esting. In either case, it appeared that the clouds of that evening, holding off their rain until the seniors were safely on their way, was a good omen, a sort of good luck wish from mother nature. For the Class of 1974 it is now history, and it is up to the members of that class to go ahead and rewrite more of the history they made by graduating from Merrillville High School. Seniors 161 President, Dave Atzhom Secretary, Cathi Haberkorn 162 Seniors Treasurer, Kris Kloth We ' ve finally made it! The class of 74 faced its final year of high school with much anticipation of the days ahead. For some, college was to be the stepping stone after high school. Filling out applications, taking aptitude tests, and making the grade seemed so important. Others, either em- ployed or seeking employment were more concerned with work loads and pay raises. No matter what the future would bring for the class of 74, they were living now and participating together in the ex- perience of high school. Anticipation about the future as well as memories of the past prevailed in the minds of the se- niors as they closed the door to high school.
