School dismissed, for- ever. Officers, Dan Simic, President; Marla Anderson, Vice-presi- dent; Jan Jergens, Treasurer; Carol Brugos, Secretary Valedictorian Paula Ferkull As the class of 1968, our past is now behind us. It is evident that we have achieved much in these past four years. Yet, just as when we were freshmen awaiting this our senior year, we now have but to look to the future. The past cannot be changed. It can, however, be remembered with either a sigh of relief or a glow of fond remembrance. This recollection is all that we can hope to achieve in regard to the past. Now we must each set out on separate paths to find the place in life which holds what we are seeking. We will each be on our own awaiting the forever approaching future. The future can be viewed in two ways— with fear or anxiety. It is only natural that each of us has a slight fear of what awaits us in life; yet, this fear should not overpower our anxiety and eagerness for the future. Longfellow seems to have expressed the ideal outlook about the future. He said: Look not mournfully to the past — it come s not back again; wisely improve the present it is thine; go forth to meet the shadowy future without fear and with a manly heart. So it should be with each of us. We should meet each day with the hope of improving ourselves and our surroundings. In this way we will find a meaningful place in the world. 7 QxjuJLou 143 Salutatorian Cheryl Lynn Bublitz 1968— the year all of us have been looking forward to: the year of the open door. High school is finally gone. We ' re now ready to step through that open door into the adult world. It’s been a lot of fun, (remember those Saturday-night TP parties?), but now after reaching this first goal we’re setting our sights a little higher. Many of us will be going on to college and other higher education. Some of us will be taking jobs. Still others will be starting families. But no matter what we do, we all follow the same path; we all step into society. We can look back on our four years to see how well we’ve prepared ourselves, but we should be looking ahead. We have the world given to us, to do with as we please. We’re the ones who future generations will look back up on and say, “With wandering steps and slow through Eden they took their solitary way,” for we’ll have left them a better world than we found it. We wish to dedicate this poem to them. Remember Christina Rossetti Remember me when I am gone away. Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand. Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay. Remember me when no more, day by day, You tell me of our future that you planned; Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterward remember, do not grieve; For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad. 181 Seniors receive top awards Cheryl Bublitz, National Merit Semi-finalist Paul Ferkull, DAR citizenship award Girls’ and Boys’ State: L to R. Janis Clement Typists Lilann Burke Kay Litherland Adviser Marilou Carlson Thanks for the memories As I think about my senior year I realize how much this yearbook has been a part of my life. Being chosen as editor of the yearbook was a great thrill. One of the honors given with this job was a two-week workshop at Indiana University during the summer. Plans were made in July for the entire book by Tina Mussie, copy editor, and me. I d like to thank Mr. Murphy, American Yearbook advisor, for helping the stalT complete these plans in September. Scotty, photographer from Walinger Studios, went from class to dances to capture just the right poses. Without the patience and cooperation of the faculty these pictures could not have been taken. I’d like to commend Walinger’s for their fine photography on all of the Senior portraits, and the cover. As our work progressed many people contributed and deserve thanks. This is our yearbook and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help from all of them, including you, the subscriber. Mrs. Lewis did an excellent job on the title page and division page. These drawings seemed to make our yearbook that much different. The addition of pages, color on the cover and new paper would not have been possible without the approval of Mr. Bovard. I personally would like to thank him for helping us with the many problems that could have never been solved without him. , Most of all, I would like to extend a special thanks to my staff and to Miss Carlson. I couldn t have done it without their great help, patience and cooperation. Miss Carlson and the staff deserve a lot of credit for giving up lunch hours, staying after school till 10:00 p.m., trying to answer ten questions at the same time, checking over and correcting page after page and neglecting home- work. In spite of all the frustrations and disappointments it was an adventure and an experience that will never be forgotten. I hope that you enjoy this yearbook as much as we ' ve enjoyed putting it together. I hope that we have accomplished telling the story of students at Merrillville High School in 1967-68. Editor-in-Chief
