'Phe Hlgh School Novv and Then The first High School of this C1tX was bullt in the year 1873 or 1874 This building still remams and IS known as the Third VN ard School Some addltlons to the origlnal building haye been made The school at first was compused of only the grades Later in about the vear 1900 an examlnatlon under the State Educational Sy stem was g1v en to several students who wlshed to pursue the higher studles Those passing th1s examination were admitted 1nto what was known as a tl1168 vear course 1n Hlgh School where only a few of the fundamental studles were taught In the vear 1883 the first class of seven graduated Wh Porter now Judge of the County Court was the principal and he had but one assistant to help him 1n teachlng A state examination had to be passed before anv one recelved a diploma The school did not progress ramdlv at first but later new mterest was shown and larger classes graduated The student bodv finally grew to such an extent that a new bu1ld1ng was needed Durlng the Christmas vacation of the year 1909 the school books and equlp ment were removed to the present Hlgh School where the number of the faculty was lncreased and a larger curriculum of studies was given In the year 1912 domestic science and manual traimng were lntroduced 1nto the Hlgh School At first no room could be found to place them but finally they were put down 1n the base ment The student body has now grown to such an extent that some puplls are requlred to sit in recltatlon rooms The graduation class has grown from seven to fifty and mole while the Freshman class has twlce th1s number The total number of graduates up to date IS about elght hundred and S1XtV six Years ago athletics was not glven very much thought in the High School and so It was not considered necessary to provlde a place for practlce Now every thing IS changed The gy mnaslum in most Hlgh Schools IS as much of a class room as any other room Some form of athletic games are necessary to promote better work in the other class rooms We are somewhat handlcapped by the lack of a gvmnaslum and an addxtlon to this building May those who read thls annual take such mterest 1n our Hlgh School that our requests for a well equlpped gym naslum and a larger blllldlllg w1ll be granted a Y 1 i ' , 's ' v v ' ' ' s - v v 1 1, 1 V 1 1 1 - 9 v ' ,.
