The Merna Basketball team of 1951-52 was banking on five lettermen from the year before, Although they were not very tall, 'what they lacked in height, they had in initiative, They started out the season very successful by defeating Mason City 43-19, at Mason City, The next game was one of the Coyotes dread to see come every year, the game with their jinx Comstock, The Merna boys seemed only to make mistakes as Comstock won 38-25, Callaway was the next victim of the Merna five at the annual celebration of 'Color Day', The score was 40 to 26 in favor of the home team, and Ruth Stevens was crowned queen of 1951 -52, Merna then met the always strong Arnold five on the home floor, This proved to be a very exciting game with Arnold leading at the end 4.1-38, This was the last game until after Christmas vacation, Then Merna came back after Christmas vacation and met their old rivals Anselmo in one of the roughest games of the year, Anselmo led all the way and when the buzzer sounded the score was Anselmo 41, Merna 33, One of the games which has always proved exciting for the Merna fans is the game with Mullen, Merna got off to a slow start and Mullen was off to a fast one, but at the end of the game Merna had caught up with Bronco's, but they won the game 43 -40, The Merna five again played Arnold in a very fast game in which Arnold won 56-41, Merna went to Oconto on january 25, where they defeated the Oconto quintet 37 -31, Then the Broken Bow reserves came to Merna and fell in defeat to the Merna boys 45 -43 , Mason City was Merna's next victim as they trounced them soundly 51-35, The Anselmo Eagles came to Merna and stopped a three game winning streak by defeating the Coyotes 47-34, Merna then went to Sargent for their worst defeat of the season, The tall and fast Sargent team defeated the Merna five 76-23, The Custer County Tournament was February 12 to 15 at Broken Bow, Merna won their first game by defeating Callaway 44 to 43 in a thriller, Then the second night they lost to Arnold 71 to 49, The Ansley Warriors defeated the Merna boys 55-38 for third place, The Merna quintet had one regular game left with Mullen when this book Went to press and the District Tournament February 27 to 29, at Anselmo where they I play Brady,

Thomas, j, Bigbee, D, Hickrnan, Coach: Mr, Rischling, The grade school basketball team, consisting of the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders, was coached by Mr, Wm, Rischling, They held their practice sessions from 1:15 to 2:15 every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, The fact that this was the first year of basketball for some of the boys and that they weren't very tall didn't seem to hinder their spirits any, because what they lacked in height they made up in school spirit, Their regular schedule was interrupted by the Weather but they played the following games, Merna 6 vs, Arnold Z5 Merna 16 vs, Anselmo Z4 Merna 16 vs, Callaway Z8 Merna 11 vs, Arnold 2.1
