Did you say you wanted to know about the Class of Fifty-one? Well, I'll tell you all about it. In the fall of 1940, six small children seemed lost standing in the doorway of the first grade at Meriwether Lewis School. This being the fir st day at school they didn't know what to do so they started crying as if they had lost their last friend. Katherine Patterson, the girl with real long pigtails, fair complexion and blue eyes, was one of the six. Katherine was the studious type and always came through with flying colors. Jim Gibson, another who has been with us for eleven years, is a very small boy who is always getting into some kind of mischief and getting caught. Jim has very cute ways and always has funny things to say. His ability to tell tales gave our class many happy hours. Mary Ann Gibson, the light-haired girl with pretty blue eyes also started with us. She is a very quiet girl and is always willing to help everyone. She is very fond of reading.. Whenever we couldn't find Mary Ann, we knew to look behind the covers of a book. Nellie Cash was also one of the six who started with us. She is a great friend of Mary Ann's and she has naturally curly hair. Aleyce Price, the blonde-haired girl is one of the big six. She is one of the bashful- type girls, but she has changed during the eleven years with us. The other little girl who started at M. L. S. was me. I had long dark hair and big brown eyes. I found my greatest interests in athletics. I couldn't let down the reputation of my brothers and sister. We were found the next year in the second grade. By now we had gotten accustomed to our school and teachers and began to like it much better. No one joined us that year. We found that the nine short months of school had ended too soon and summer vacation was here again. Our next great step was the third grade. This is another year no one joined us on our journey through school. In the fourth grade we found a new member had joined our ranks which we were very pleased to have with us. The cute little boy with dark complexion and hair who always had funny interesting things to say was none other than Peter Morris. Peter, in his seven years with our class, hasn't changed a bit. He might well be named the Romeo of our class. Lewis Harmon also joined us that year. Lewis has real pretty dark wavy hair. He has kept us cheerful with his wonderful singing. We were very glad to have him with us. As we entered the fifth grade room, we found it like the second and third grade. No one had joined our group to make the journey with us. This year we were very proud to have Miss Adams as our teacher and we all thought a lot of her. 17 The sixth grade found us a group of very happy-go-lucky children. No one joined our class again, but we still had a wonderful time together. Barbara Breeden, a small girl with blonde hair and blue eyes greeted us at the door of Miss Dunn's room. Barbara had come all the way from Stanardsville to join our group and we were very proud to have her with us. We found out she was the Principal's dau-ghter and she warned us to be very good. We found Barbara a big asset to our basketball team as well as an excellent student. Mr. Breeden was our new Principal that year and all of us thought the world of him. He loved to tease everyone and give them all kinds of nicknames. That year no one could decide whether we were grade or high school students, for we were in the middle of them both. We finally reached high school. You should have heard us shout as we enter- ed the door of the Freshman room. By now we had to get out of our childish ways and act like young ladies and gentlemen for we had to set good examples for the smaller children. Our first day we were all mixed up. We had been used to having just one teacher, but now we had four or five different ones. It seemed like all we did was change classes. By the time we got used to one class and teacher the bell would ring for us to go to another. This year six new members joined our group and increased the number greatly. They all were from the big towns of Free Union and Boonesville. Katherine Carr, one of them came from Boonesville. Katherine was the cute little girl with pretty brown hair and eyes. She was full of giggles and funny things to say all the time. She will also be remembered for artistic talents. James Yowell, the bashful boy with dark blond hairlis also one of the group from Boonesville. James is one member of our class who never got in a hurry. Jean Burruss another of the group has long blonde curls, her nice personality brought her plenty of friends especially of the opposite sex. Georgie Roach. the tall blonde who wears glasses also joined us that year. She was bashful at first, but has changed since she joined us that year. 'We have also heard that Georgie is very susceptible to spoiling. Phyllis Herring, one of the Boonesville girls, has pretty coal black wavy hair. She has added plenty of life and laughs to our class. Ann Wood, is the jolliest of all the crowd from Boonesville. She always has a big smile on her face. Julian Via, the bear hunter of our class also joined us this year from Boonesville. He is tall with dark hair and always ready with a tall tale about some of his bear hunts. Toward the end of the year, we were used to our class changing and our new classmates who had joined us that year. The next year found us as Sophomores. We were all very happy to meet again for nine more months of school. Dorothy Morris joined us that year. Dorothy had pretty dark hair and sparkling eyes. We were very proud to have her with us. 18 O Juniors! What a year! We had two new members to join us that year. Allen Dunn was from over near Ivy., He had dark eyes and hair and always liked to have a good time. Russell Ray was another who joined us that year. Russell has real blond curly hair and big blue eyes. He is always telling things to make us and the teachers laugh. He has added a lot to our class the two years he has been with us. We enjoyed ourselves very much going on the Junior and Senior picnic with the Seniors and also on the trip to Washington with them. The next year was our final step. We had all longed for and looked forward to our Senior year. We were very glad to have Freddie Frazier to join our class and to graduate with us. Freddie is a good-natured boy and has very quiet ways. Miss Whitted was our Senior teacher. We were very pleased to have her for our Senior year and we will never forget all the good things she has done for us. We know we will miss being with her in our ,future years. There is not long before we will all part, but I hope someday we will meet again and talk about what good times we had at M. L. S. We want to thank all the teachers that have taught us for what they have done to help us for I am sure the things they have taught us will be a great help in whatever we undertake in the future. A There you have it, the history of the Seniors of '5l. Joyce Hicks Historian 19 Class Prophecy One warm spring night in late May, I dropped in a chair, exhausted from a hard day's work at the office. One of my office assistants had been sick and naturally Mr. Rockfish decided to catch up on all of his back correspondence that day, so I had double duty. I picked up my magazine to finish a stony I had started reading but somehow I couldn't get interested in the story and found my- self thinking back over the ten years since our class had graduated. Before very long my magazine had fallen to the floor and I was asleep and dreaming. It seemed all the members of the Class of '51 from Meriwether Lewis my old alma mater, were working for one man, whose name was Mr. R. T. Rockfish. Mr. Rockfish, by the way, was the husband of Miss Whitted, our home room teacher back at M. L. S. Mr. Rockfish, as the name suggests, had a large home and all that goes with it--including the money. He also owned a clothing factory, which employed a great many people. On the door of the main office was painted, William Morris, Manager: Lewis Harmon, Assistant Manager. They were doing agreat job with this factory. In fact, instead of drearning of the latest fashions from Paris, the girls were willing to give their right hand for one of those Morris and Harmon creations. As well as I remember, William--or Peter as he was known in those days--always had an eye for ladies' clothes. Anne Wood, Phyllis Herring, and Georgie Roach were three of the buyers for the factory, but Phyllis was thinking of quitting and getting married. Anne was already married but enjoyed the work so much that she persuaded her husband to let her continue her job. Among the secretaries for the factory, I found Mary Ann Gibson and the bookkeeper was Joyce Hicks. Joyce was still spending her spare moments hitting home runs, and keeping the basketball court occupied. She was coaching a team of her own on her spare nights. The factory sponsored a weekly program on television and, of course, Russell Ray was the announcer. The script was written by Aleyce Price, who had been to New York and taken a course in writing scripts of all kinds. In the home of Mr. Rockfish, there were many people working. Among them were a beautician, nurse, dietition, chaffeurs, and private teachers. Dorothy Morris was the beautician and everyone had the latest hair styles-- except her. Her husband was rather conservative and refused to let her dye her hair purple and have it styled in the who done it manner. Z0 Jean Burruss was the nurse. She used to be a secretary in the factory, but after a few years decided to be a nurse. She found the doctors more interesting than the business executives. No one was ever sick. How could they be when Jean was around and Nellie Cash to plan the meals. Nellie was married, but came to the home every day. Mr. Rockfish's two little nieces lived with him. He hired Miss Barbara Breeden as their private teacher and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Katherine Carr, who was married soon after our graduation, came to give them art lessons. James Yowell was the handy man and kept the lawn mowed. When he wasn't mowing the lawn, you could bet on finding James asleep in the cornfortable chairs on the lawn. Mr. Rockfish was very fond of hunting so he invited Julian Via to go hunting with him because Julian could always carry him to the spot where the big game could be found. Between hunting trips, Julian was trying to invent a gun which would kill bears on one side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, when the hunter was standing on the other. Jim Gibson and Allen Dunn were the chaffeurs, but Mr. Rockfish was think- ing of getting a plane so Allen could do a little high flying instead of his usual low flying. Jim enjoyed being a chaffeur. He usually entertained his passen- gers with a favorite hillbilly song or one of his long-winded stories. Freddy Frazier was the private policeman to protect the big estate. Very few people got by without some kind of identification. This dream aroused my interest in my classmates and since Mr. and Mrs. Rockfish were taking a two weeks vacation in Florida, leaving me with a little spare time, I decided to do a little investigating., I have come to the conclusion that I must be psychic. Through the aid of the newspaper, telephone and the ones of our class that were working in the same town with me, I found that my dream was almost wholly true. I found Miss Whitted and the rest of the class in various parts of the world-- but all engaged in the jobs I had dreamed. Katherine Patter son Pr ophet . Z1 Seniors of 1951 It seems now the time has come, When those who're so close must part, The tough days -they were often called: But here is where real days just start, The Senior Classmates of '51, With their minds so very bright, Will go out in this wide, wide world, Each to brighten the free America's light. There is Katherine Patterson, Who in all studies can do very well, And the way she gets along with classmates, Makes her personality swell, Next comes Barbara Breeden, The glamorous girl of the class, When it comes to hard work with classmates We just couldn't leave her last., And then there's Jim Gibson, Whose nickname is often known as trouble.' Just ask a teacher about him, And watch her blow-a-bubble.. Peter Morris is one of those boys, Who gets along with girls as easy as gravy, If you don't know what I mean, Just compare him with the Navy. ' Next we have a little tomboy, But a very nice little girl--Joyce Hicks, The way she plays ball, You might think she is from the sticks. Next is little Katherine Carr, Whose face is always bright, She is a talented artist, You can bet I am right. And next we find a well-known boy His name is Russell Ray, Folks, if you don't want to be embarrassed, When he is around--don't stay! ZZ Fred Frazier is our quietest member And very nice and polite, He's the only married one of us But he claims it is quite all right. Then there's Julian Via, Who tells a bifg tale once in a while To add more fun and joy, And leave everyone with a big smile. We cannot forget James Yowell, The boy who studies the hardest of us all From the way he studies, He shows all of us up in the fall. Lewis Harmon is a lot of fun Wherever he might go, He adds much to the life of a party, As we all do know. We must not forget Jean Burruss, The cute one with bangs cut in her hair, A girl of her disposition Is very, very rare. A girl from way up Boonesville, Has the name of Phyllis Herring, She has to be present in crowds To keep things always stirring. Nellie Cash is next on my list The quietest of the girls around school, A very nice girl for someone But I hope not any old fool., Ann Wood is one who once gets started Doesn't know when to stop, If you try to tell the biggest tale, She, most of the time, ends on top. Mary Ann Gibson is the girl, Who tries very much to do right She clears herself of troubles Without even starting a fight. And more like Aleyce Price, We could use in this world, If you don't believe me, Ask most any boy or girl. Z3 Georgie Roach is the little blonde, Who lives on main street of her town, And whenever you don't hear any bragging You know she isn't around. Next we have a very nice girl, Dorothy Morris Who is very smart in her books, If you don't know how sweet girls are Just take a peep at her looks. And I, Allen,Dunn, the guy from Ivy, And I'm not bragging, but it's fine, I was so bright in all my subjects, The teachers just called me Sunshine. And now each one of us, Will be soon without a teacher, Upon our own in life, To help the younger reacher. We will drift far apart but , Memories will linger with each girl and boy, How we worked and played together And shared each sorrow and joy. 24 Last Will and Testament We, the Senior Class of 1951, being of unsound rnind and disintegrating memory after four strenuous years, do hereby make, publish anddelcare this as our last and best will and testament. hereby revoking all former wills, bequests, and devices of whatever nature by us already made.
