Rarely are we given the privilege of knowing a person who awakens us to a keener awareness of the good things of life. Mr. Van Moorhem was such a man. His friendliness, genuine concern for others, and fine sense of humor added warmth to the lives of the people who knew him. His talent as an artist was coupled with an ability to communicate this gift to others, giving them pleasure and enjoyment. His strength of character required and inspired his con- tacts and associates to be better citizens. In our hearts and memories he is a permanent part of this school and com- munity. Though we were quite unsure of our future, we elected our first class officers. They were Dave Crnich, president; Nancy Viles, secretary, Gordon Neevel, treasurer; and Bill Freeman, class representative. Being underclassmen, we had many questions to ask and Mr. Holland, our advisor, answered them for us. Jill Geleynse and Don Boyd represented our freshman class at our first Football Homecoming. Finals along with springtime, moved us closer to our sophomore year. Beginning our sophomore year, we felt quite superior but we were quickly put in our place by the juniors and seniors. We elected our officers to lead us through this difficult year. They were Don Boyd, president; Dave Crnich, vice president; John OFFICERS: F. Sprague, vice president; D. Claxton, secretary; J. Zylstra, president; L. Johnson, representative; R. Fleming, treasurer; Mr. Kratz, advisor; Mr. Knudsen, advisor. Become Leaders Bartok, secretary; Bob Weatherby, treasurer, and Scott Fjellman, class representative. Our advisor, Mr. Knudsen, led us through the year with few problems. Alana Butenschoen and Dave Crnich represented our sophomore class at the Football Homecoming. Sharon Abbott represented us at our first Basketball Homecoming. Another school year was over and we stepped forward to one of our most formative years of high school. We began our junior year with Mrs. Kenoyer as our new advisor. With her help we elected our officers: Bill Freeman, president; Ron Fleming, vice president, Karen Myhre, secretary; Alana Butenschoen, treasurer; and Don Boyd, class representative. Kris Holliday and Bob Weatherby represented our junior class at our Football Homecoming. Shelley Burkhart represented us at the Basketball Homecoming. We had three major events in the spring. These were all successful under the chairmenship of Shelley Burkhart, Jr. Whatnot; Randi Parker, Jr.-Sr. Prom; and Kris Holliday, Jr.-Sr. Banquet. By the time the year was over, we felt prepared for our final and most important year. When our senior year began, we were the leaders at last. Through-out the year, we kept busy with our many activities. The excitement of the year made it pass quickly as graduation grew closer. Don Boyd Dave Crnich A.S.B. President A.S.B. Under Head Coach John Abbott and Assistant Coach Bruce Taubenheim, fired up from last season, the team started out looking for a W.C.L. title. In preparation for the season, 17 boys went to football camp during the summer. The season came on with the Trojans having 33 boys turning out, 11 from each class. The first game was with Stanwood, who was rated third in the state last year. The game was a Trojan victory which was followed by more. The Trojans strong line was an asset to equally strong backs which gave them a well balanced attack on the ground or air. Then the team suffered an extreme loss to their attack. Senior flanker, Bill Freeman, threw a key block in the Concrete game and broke his arm. After this, the squad was plagued with injuries. Terry O’Hara, team quarterback, broke his ankel which took even more sting out of the Trojan attack. Homecoming was for the home team and the Trojans took Lynden 25-0 which brightened the night. Three backs received jerseys for gaining over 100 yards. They were Seniors Bill Freeman, Don Boyd and _ Dave Crnich. Halfback Don Boyd was star ground gainer with blocking from a fine line and fullback Dave Crnich. Boyd gained 1200 yards, a goal never attained by a Meridian High School grid star. Honorary Captain was Don Boyd and the Inspirational Player was Dave Crnich. McDonald, B. Guitteau, S. Granahan, M. Clark, J. Bartok, T. O’Hara. SECOND ROW: J. Smith, B. Weatherby, D. Manthey, G. The squad was sparked on by the high scoring of captain Ron Fleming, outstanding rebounding of Dave Crnich, who averaged 14 rebounds per game, and very strong defense of guard Don Boyd. These three players helped contribute to the season’s games of seven wins and eleven losses. Also contributing a great deal to the team were the efforts of Dan Manthey, Bob Bird, Mike Buchholz, Jeff Beard and Gary Shannon. Those players, except for senior Dan Mathey, will help make ‘up the nucleus of next year’s ball club. Although they missed a berth at the district playoffs by one game, they came up with a first place trophy at their Christmas Tournament.
