IVIERIDIAN, last September, we began another journey toward our treasure - our diploma. The Freshmen started at Freshman inlet and journeyed to Sophomore Cove. The Sophomores progressed to Junior Bay. The Juniors reached Senior lsland. And the Seniors found the treasure on Senior Island. Our Captain expertly steered our ship through the rough waters of our journey and helped guide us toward our treasure. The ship ran smoothly with the help of our admirals, our commander, the lieutenants, the chief petty officers, the ensigns, the warrant officers, the seamen, the nautical notes, and the sea nymphs. 1 Cu 9 xl G' 'O OWBVC G Enix ore lrm 7 Qi Na? - 'U 55 ' X Q Q' S sk, ' NSU Nfofef . There was no insub- ordination on our ship. Ervin Granahan, Petty Officer First-Class, attended Whatcom County lnterhigh Council meetings. He helped set up an all- county school activity calendar. Miriam Martinsen, Petty Officer Second-Class, managed the finances on board ship and could be seen every morning in the cabin writing receipts and checks. Julia Johnson, also Petty Officer Second-Class, was busy recording the minutes or orders at Student Council meetings, therefore, the ship's log was always up to date. Petty Officer Third-Class Jean Meyer was busy creating ways to advertise the crew's activities. She wrote weekly for two local newspapers and saw that the road sign was changed accordingly. The Student Council consisted of A.S.B. officers, class presidents, and one representative from each class. Among their duties were the assigning of parking spaces and the okaying of dates submitted for activ- ities. Meridian was host for interhigh Student Council in November, the topic was county sportsmanship. Ctrl? ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY OFFICERS: SITTING - J. Johnson, Secretary, B. Gilda, Pres- ident, M. At first they were rather lost and awed at the thought of being in high school but soon began joining in the activities of the school. A. Holtz J. Johnson and M. Hayes were elected to represent their class as officers. Judy Pike was chosen as to represent their class as carnival royalty. They ended their freshman year by having a picnic at a local park. Being sophomores, the class of '59 had the privilege of initiating the fresh man. Elected as class officers for the year were: D. Wright, K. Ritchie, S Gansler, M. Hanks, D. Abbot, and D. Hammell. Chosen to represent their class at the annual carnival was Maxine Hanks. Jean Meyer and Deanna Megard were cho sen as student body song leaders. During their junior year J. Meyer, R. Upper, W. Sheppard, M. Johnson K Ritchie, and J. Pike served as class officers. Myrna Johnson was chosen to rep resent their class as carnival royalty. Paul Sires was elected as chairman of the annual Junior What-What. General chairman for the junior-senior banquet was Brenda Baldwin. The class of '59 started their final year off by going to the Puyallup Fa-lr for their senior sneak . Class officers for the year were B. Jarvis, B. Mandott, C. Oser, K. Anderson, and J. Oltman. For their senior play they presented a three- act comedy entitled Hillbilly Weddin . Lovely Sharon Anderson was elected to reign over the annual carnival. Given a wonderful farewell in May in the form of a banquet and prom, the class of '59 received a grand send off. Baccalaureate and graduation were the final rewards for their four trying and exciting years at Meridian High School. 3 U? Yi Y-14-AV. . 7 Motto: Conduct and courage lead to honor I I , . Wm .Timm- 651.9 The junior year is an active one and it proved to be exceptionally busy this year to the fifty-one shipmates. lt started out with a very successful dance, followed immediately by the election of the junior princess who was pretty, blue eyed Janet Ableman. She represented the class with honor. The next big decision was the selection of class rings. The Junior-What-Not of 1959 will be long remembered. The results showed that every- one did his best. The seniors felt that the Junior-Senior prom and banquet was the best ever. The class also took part in other school activities such as the carnival. The ensigns of the class were president, Eob Austin, vice president, Art Forman, secretary, Sue Lindaas, treasurer, Janet Melos, and junior student body representative, Gary Erickson. Helping to pep up our games were Helen Boyd, Diane Stout, and Judy Edin as school yell-leaders, and Carolee Jarvis and Bev Drury as school song-leaders. On September 2, 1958, the forty-five shipmates of the sophomore class returned to M.H.S. still thinking they were freshman, but eager to carry on. The first thing accomplished was the election of the ensigns. They are president, Maury Blondheimg vice president, Marlys Granahan, secretary, Kathleen Lovel I, treasurer, Donna Holz, sergeant-at-arms, Wally Davieau, and sophomore student council representative, Judy Aker. The next duty was the choosing of a sophomore princess. Popular, vivacious, Judy Fjellman was chosen. Contrary to custom the sophomores adminis- tered a mild freshman initiation, and after school a party of dancing and games was held in their honor. Throughout the school year sophomores Marlys Granahan, Sarah Richardson, and Frances Watts sang in a trio, and Judy Aker and Judy Fjellman sang in a duet for some of our programs. After worrying about finding classes and avoiding seniors, the sixty shipmates of the freshman class got off to a good start. Besides school work, most of the class joined clubs, went to the games, and bopped at the dances. For ensigns, the class chose Ed Gilda, president, Dennis Williams, vice president, Patsy Brackett, secretary, Donna Baucke, treasurer, and Irene Johnson, freshman student body represent- ative. Several girls were in the drill team and two freshman girls, Sharon White and Sandra Miner, were chosen majorettes. Most of the boys played on the junior high sport teams. Popular, brunette, Donna Baucke was chosen to be freshman princess at the carnival. A chorus of thirty-nine freshman girls sang for some of the school's programs, This was the largest girls' chorus M.H.S. has ever had. The girls were under the direction of Nlr. Don Sires, music teacher. Avalea Sprague was pianist. Mr. Holland is the freshman class advisor. FIRST ROW: L. Franklin, C. Minaker, S. Miner, J. Eckert, G. Blasdell, J. Hawks, L. Forbes, A.
