SENIOR PLAY OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY First Row, left to right: Bob Holz, Monsieur de La Croix , Pauline Joneli, Madame Elise , Pat Hawk, Stewardess , Jackie Aker, Therese , Marilyn Baker, Mrs. Skinner , Barbara Johnson, Emily Kim- brough , Joann Meyer, Cornelia Skinner. Second Row: Alida Erickson, Mary Jane Billman, Make Up, Joyce Hayes, Inspector , Judy Ruzicka, Winifred , Bob Little, Purser , Dennis Lord, Admiral , Tom Tabor, Mr. Skinner , Ron Hillmer, Leo , Jerry House, Steward , Jim Horgen, Dick , Jack Mooney, Window Cleaner , David Witter, business manager, Jim Hill, sound effects, Janice Pike, student director, Harold Jones, lighting, Rosemary Keith, prompter, Joe Brown, stage crew, Mary Jane Anderson, cos- tumes, Phyllis Simonson, publicity, Hank Gansler, stage manager, Mr. Riehl, director. Missing from picture, Jim Halderman, stage crew, Leona Fox, properties Elaine Bullene, programs, Larry Rodgers, lighting, and Nina Harrison, usher. From the opening moment which portrayed the sailing of Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough for France in l923, to the final scene where they leave Paris for home, the actors and stage crews did an efficient and colorful iob. Joann Meyer's portrayal of Cornelia was lively and amusing as she was alternately dram- atic and slinky, building to the monologue in the third act, which actually started the real Cornelia off on an acting career and climaxed the play. Barbara Johnson, as Emily, made a delightful foil for the dramatic Cornelia. She handled her line with deft humor. Tom Tabor, as the urbane Otis Skinner, delivered his wit in true theatrical manner. Mrs. Skinner, played by Marilyn Baker, was realistic as the doting ITWEHTUUB. Jerry House, in the role of steward, was effectively puzzled by the young ladies' behavior. Bob Little, as the ship's purser, and Pat Hawk, stewardess, were convincing. Competeritly handling the part of Admiral, actually the ship's band leader, was Dennis Lord. Jim Horgen and Ron Hillmer, as Leo ancl Dick, the boys Cornelia and Emily met on the boat, were believable as Harvard medical students. English accents of Betty Mills and Judy Ruzicka, as Harriet and Winifred, were accurate, and their interpretations of their roles skillful. Joyce Hayes was capable as the medical inspector, while Jackie Aker and Pauline Joneli, as Therese and Madame Elise, gave their characters poise and neatness, handling their French accents well. The importunate Monsieur de La Croix was vividly portrayed by Bob Holz, Jack Mooney, the window cleaner, added to the last act. Good staging was notable in every scene, with the ncw lights used for maximum dramatic emphasis. Mr. Riehl was director, with Janice Pike student director. Music between acts was provided by Elaine Sharp. The event in the year for the class was the traditional initiation of the Freshmen. The date chosen for the big day was September 24. A committee consisting oi Herman Joneli, John Bullene, Larry Tobiassen, Elaine Nelson and Wilma Patten was appointed to plan the initiation. With the girls dressed in gunny-sacks and the boys in long under- wear and girls' bathing suits, the Freshmen were quite a sight! Student Body Officers The student body officers, with the exception of two, are elected in the spring of each year by an all-school election, following a week of vigorous cam' paigning by various candidates for the positions. The students to fill the offices of secretary and vice-pres- ident are elected in the fall of the next year. The president this year, Larry Rodgers, had the iob of presiding over all meetings of the student council and all assemblies. The vicelpresident, Bob Holz, had as his duty to take over meetings and preside at events when the president was absent. Mericlian's system of handling money has proved very accurate and satisfactory. At the head of this system is Joyce Hayes, the student body treasurer, who takes care of the money from every organization in the school. Recorcling the minutes of each student council meeting is the iob of the student body secretary, Jackie Aker. Student Council Student Council consists of the stuclent body officers, class presidents, and representatives. Problems pertinent to the student body are brought uo in the meetings which are held each month, Aside from their regular duties, the Student Council co-sponsored a dance in the winter. Meridian is justifiably proud of its officers and the Student Council for the democratic student government and stability in financing school organizations which they provide. The boys pitched right in learning plays, block- ing and tackling for their first encounter ot the season against Nooksack Valley. The TROJANS lost to the faster Pioneers, but the score was respectable, 18-9. Blaine was next on our schedule and the TROJANS, after a hard fight in the second half, lost this one 32-l2. ln the next four games the team battled valiantly but failed to break into the win column although the TRO- JANS scored in every game. Seniors playing their last high school football game this year were: Bob Little, Jack Mooney, Jim Halderman, Herb Cole, Ed Hecock, Bob Ritchie, Dennis Lord and Ron Hillmer. This leaves a good starting field of fourteen returning lettermen. Another good omen for future years was the organiza- tion of the Junior High football squad. Jim Halderman was awarded the inspirational trophy for fine playing, good sportsmanship and ability to work with others. Cole catches a pass at the Blaine game! The squad was composed of seventh, eighth and ninth graders, coached by Mr. Taylor of the grade school staff, at the grade school playfield. ln its first year of competition, the boys played six county league games. With such a Junior High program to give the boys training and ex- perience, the Senior High set-up should more nearly approximate that of other schools in the county. The 1952-53 TROJAN basketball squad turned in a record of five wins to twelve losses for the season, with close scoring contests of good spectator interest, The Whatcom County League had two strong teams, Lynden and Blaine, which won all their games except one apiece lost to each other. MERIDIAN, Mt, Baker, and Nooksack battled for the third spot, the end of the first half of play seeing all three tied for the position, Partly because of a bad night against Ferndale, the TROJANS ended in fifth place. Oak Harbor, champions of the B loop to the south, provided Coach Rod Jungquist's boys with two contests, which, taken together, saw both the TROJANS and Oak Harbor come up with the same number of points. We had a one point advantage there, while Oak Harbor man- aged the same margin here. Senior lettermen this year included: Hillmer, Rodgers, Halderman, Cole, Ritchie, and Hecock. Herb Cole was voted the inspirational trophy. Others who saw action in varsity games this year were Senior Bob Little, who iniured his foot at the beginning of the season and was unable to play afterwards, Gary Morgan and Jim Galen, Juniors, and Ron Little and Lorry Tobiassen, Sophomores. The Girls' Athletic Association, with a membership of forty-five, started off the year by playing baseball, speedball and volleyball, followed by basketball and when the weather began to warm up they again turned out for baseball. Noon was the playing time for the G. A. A., whose members are iuniors and seniors and who do not have regular P. E. classes. The sophomores in P. E. classes belong to the organization, but do not play on the G. A, A, schedule except for play-offs. The girls enioyed speedball and volleyball playdays at Bellingham and Mount Baker, and baseball at Blaine. They were hosts to girls from each school in the county on February fourth for the basketball playday, which was under the chairmanship of Janice Pike, the Meridian club's president. Over eighty girls participated and they were divided up into teams for games and entertainment. G. A. A, activities are planned to develop sportsmanship and understanding between individuals and schools on a basis of the interests that all have in common, QP - '--- -' '--'- 1-- ' -- 1 - - -'Wi' l l I STAHlEY'S VARIETY STORE 5 I 1307 Commercial Street Bellingham, Washington -in ----- - -ttt ------- - - t- -t-tt- tttt - -ttt --t- - - - - - -14- T,--tt- t-tt- -t -tt- .tt. -1.1 - -. .t., .. ..t. -t,t....t..- .. - - . l l . ! i Q L E ' S i Schnetder's 5 Q . . l l 1 Q dlp hm, 1 l Corner Grocery , !
