Most of us have been looking forward to this year since the first grade, and now that we have finally reached our destination, we are not too sure whether we are happy or sad about it. Probably a little of both. But we do know, that, as we have participated in many activities, our last year in high school has been our best. For Homecoming this year, we had thirteen Senior candidates from whom janet Sales was selected Homecoming Queen by our winning football team. Also to help the Homecoming spirit, the Senior class sold mums to young and old alike. The next big important event was the Christmas Formal, which the Senior class sponsored, and which was held in the Candlelight Room of the Owyhee Hotel. Polly Ambrose, Senior candidate, reigned as Queen of the Harvest Ball in November During half time of our first basketball game played with Boise High, Kitty Conner was crowned Tip-Off Queen. Senior class also sold class pins for Seniors, juniors, and Sophomores. Our Senior year has been busy and profitable. As we surrender our beloved Senior Section to another class, we wish all future graduates the same good that we have gained from our years in M.H.S . It began early with the collecting of dues to pay for the Junior-Senior Prom. We also had a slave sale of junior girls. This Was not only a good money-making project but was also a lot of fun. Other school activities that We participated in were Homecoming, pre-Bishop Kelly game activities, the I-Iarvest Ball, the Christmas Formal, and the Prom in the spring. Another highlight of this past year was the choosing of our class rings , which we received the first part of February. . Not only have We as a class engaged in many activities, but we also have junior girls and boys who have shown leadership in our school and out: In all sports our boys have been up top with the Senior boys , and We are proud to have Carolyn Lenton as a Varsity Cheerleader. Steve Mikesell was elected president of the Idaho State Student Council. We are all very proud of Steve. The junior Class has succeeded in making this year a big success at M. H. S. We are looking forward now to an even better Senior year. We showed our school spirit by turning out to the games, supporting school rallies, attending school plays , and--hardest of all--behaving ourselves! Our first money-making pro j e ct was the selling of stickers and emblemsg this was very successfulg We also sponsored Janice Grant as our Harvest Ball candidate. Our first project was an exhibit at the Western Idaho State Fair, depicting the knowledge gained through Home Economics. Membership week was held and climaxed by the Soph- omore Get Acquainted for Sophomore girls interested in FHA. For Homecoming, we sponsored jerry Tanner as queen candidate and used the theme of Beat 'Em for our float. Our chapter took pride in having two state FHA officers, Bessie Marshall--State Mother, and Donna Stevens --State President. We had one girl working on her State De- gree. Good Health--A Valuable Asset was the chapter theme this year, we had many projects based on this subject. Other activities during the year were cake sales, candy sales , the nylon drive, selling Meridian Warrior sweatshirts, a Christmas party, installation and initiation of jr. high and high school officers and members. YFC is a non-denominational organization Whose purpose is the spread of the Gospel of jesus Christ through the activities sponsored by clubs in the schools and invitation to rallies presented at the Columbian Auditorium in Boise on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Each year the rally brings in prominent guest speakers outstanding films, and vocal groups. The M. H. S. club plays a top role in all of these and other activities. The purpose of the Pride and Development Society has been to deepen pride in our school and to strengthen the school spirit among the students. The PDS- also dealt with controlling the litter problem on the grounds and in the halls and has tried to curb the noise during the assemblies. The Pride and Development Society sold pop corn at some of the basketball games to earn money either to buy a new trophy case for our school or to remodel the case that we now have so that We may have room to display our growing collection of trophies. M Troop is an organization created to help improve pep and spirit at Meridian High School. It was formed under the leadership of Mrs. Poteet and Mr. Lowe, advisers, and the club's council, which consists of the cheerleaders, mascot, and officers. The officers for the year have been Gary Felt-President: Pat Brown-Vice Presidentg Corinne Ostroot-Secretary-Treasurer, jerry Tanner-Girl's Representativeg George Gress-Boys' Representative . In Working to create pep and spirit, M Troop has been quite active in making signs and taking part in pep assemblies. M Troop's main project this year was selling Meridian T-Shirts. These T-Shirts were chosen to be the official uniform for the boys in the club, but non-members were also allowed to buy them at a slightly higher price. This has been the club's first year and it has been quite successful. The boys' and the girls' pep sections worked together in the cheers and really supported the team. It consisted of forty-seven members , most of whom were ready and willing to work hard, which was just what they had to do. Yearbook subscriptions were sold in the halls, advertisements were sold to businesses in the Meridian, Boise, Eagle, Star, and Nampa areas, several days were spent taking organization pictures, layouts were drawn, stories written, and pages typed. Staff members had to be both salesmen and artists, and proved to be just that. In September, the Idaho State High School Press Association held its annual workshop at Idaho State University in Pocatello. Its purpose is to suggest new methods and ideas for school yearbooks and newspapers. Mrs. White, Bill Cox, Ember Loveland, Laurel Shipley, and Corinne Ostroot attended the conference. Several new ideas and layouts were used in the annual this year. One new idea was the use of picture frames on some of the pages. These turned out quite well, as did the rest of the art, thanks to our fine artists. Finally after much hard work and the eternal last minute rushes before deadlines , the 1966 Mana I-Ia Sa was completed. When the books arrived in the Spring, students and teachers alike spent a day signing books and remembering the happenings of the 1965- 66 school year. 103 SEATED, LEFT TO RIGHT: Clarence Bolen, Typistg Linda Lamm, Typist, Lahna Peterson, Make-up: STANDING Polly Ambrose, Exchange Editor, janet Sales, Feature Editor, Calleen johnson, Assistant Editor, Robert jossis Sports Editor, Frank Thomason, News Editor, Penny Hansen, Make-upg Miss Williams, Adviser, Renee Shelby, Editor-in-Chief. To accomplish this, Renee Shelby, editor-in-chief, and Cal- leen johnson, associate editor, attended a newspaper conference at Brigham Young Uni- versity in Provo, Utah, August 9-14. Other weekend workshops were held throughout the year to help the staff put out a better newspaper. The staff has tried to publish stories which will be of interest to the student body. They include school, community, and national news stories. Their adviser, Miss Elizabeth R. Williams , has been an appreciated guiding hand during the year. 105 BOYS, STATE LEFT TO RIGHT: Bill Cox, Wayne Mittleider, Robert jossis, Gary johnson. Each year three outstanding junior girls are chosen as delegates to Syringa Girls' State. Last summer this honor was given to Donna Stevens, LaRee Lenton, and Caroline Brooks. Donna, LaRee, and Caroline spent an exciting week on the College of Idaho campus with 250 other girls from all over the state. During the week they engaged in activities concerning government on the city, county, and state levels- campaigning for offices, competing between Federalist and Nationalist parties, and legislating at the Capitol Building. All three girls were members of the Nationalist Party. Caroline was a citizen of Buffalo I-lump, LaRee's residence was Owyhee, and Donna lived in Teton City. In the Capitol they played the roles of State Senators. One of the challenging activities was running for office and these girls accepted the challenge. Each delegate enjoyed the week greatly and gained many new friends. Each year outstanding juniors from throughout the state are chosen to attend Gem Boys' State. The delegates are chosen by the faculty advisory committee according to the student's scholarship, leadership, personality, and participation in extra-curricular activities. Attending the 1965 Gem Boys' State at Boise College, jrme 6-13, were Gary johnson, Robert Jossis, Wayne Mittleider, and Bill Cox. Presenting the resolve under both the affirmative and the negative stand, the debaters came to know both sides of the issue. Debate tournaments were staged at several valley schools and at other schools around the area. Meets were held at Borah, Nampa, and Payette. Meridian hosted two such local tournaments. In addi- tion to these, the debaters traveled to Idaho State University and Rexburg. They also attended the district III declamation meet. Other debaters attended the YMCA Youth Legislature held in Boise in April. Debate coach for Meridian is Miss Elizabeth R. Williams. Declamation is a group of speech activities comprised of two parts. The Debate class is charged with forensic activities, while the Speech class is in charge with interpretation of speech functions. Various departments of the whole group include original oration, original essay, retold story, radio speech, one- act play, poetry recitation, panel discussion, dramatic interpretation, and humorous interpretation. Students participating in declamation included the debaters who traveled to Idaho State University in january, and the debaters and the members of the speech class who attended SRV declamation held at Ontario in February. Whittaker, D. Morten- DIRECTOR Mr. Peterson Janice Grant, Jeanie Gardner, Vicki Mangum J V CHEERLEADERS By attending all the games and Working hard to boost school spirit, the 1965-66 cheerleaders have done a good job of representing the student body. They were in charge of all the pep assemblies and the Bishop Kelly parade as Well as making pep signs. A new style of cheerleading was added this year in the form of splits and cartwheels. These Were practiced three mornings a Week under the guidance of Mr. Williams and presented at the first basketball game. This added a lot to the girls style of cheering. Here the cheerleaders would like to express their thanks to all the students who participated in school activities and helped to make the year more successful. This is a heart-warming story of the very poor Ruggles children who are invited to Christmas dinner at the home of rich and kindly Carol Bird. This is a joyous occasion for them. The actors portrayed anticipation, joy and fullfillment in the play, blended with a touch of pathos and a sublime faith in God.
