How did our annual come to be called this? When the first MHS annual was published in 1920, the most important question was: What shall we call our annual? At last they selected the name Mana Ha Sa . Mana Ha Sa was an Indian runner who was famed for his swiftness in carrying mes- sages for his tribe. As the Indian warriors met their defeats and gained their victories, Mana Ha Sa carried the news across the plains to the villages. It is our hope that this Mana Ha Sa will carry memories back to you over the years of this year at MHS. We hope it will keep fresh in I 964-65. rhesfuff M I X wi X W Mig I ' fmt, I CMA, . Elected to guide us was President Denny Billman. Mary Bales was our Harvest Ball candidate. Arriving at school in the fall of our Junior year, we realized that we were one step closer to our goal. President Denny Pitkin led us through our iunior year. We also supplied one student body officer, Mike Mikesell, and one varsity cheerleader, Mary Bales. Lura Morgan was our Harvest Ball candidate. As our last service for the seniors, we sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme of the Prom, which was held in the Crystal Ballroom ofthe Boise Hotel, was Graduation Day . Seniors-at last! Barbara Green was crowned Homecoming Queen during half-time ceremonies of the Bishop Kelly game. Judy Mitchell reigned as Queen of the Harvest Ball in November. We chose Winter Wonderland as the theme for the Christmas Formal held in the Eagles Ball Room. In late October tragedy hit our class, for Ron Woods was sud- denly taken away from us in a motorcycle-car accident. Although he is gone, he will always be in our memories. As we graduate on May 17, taking all our memories with us, we hope that the underdlassmen will cherish the beloved Senior Section as much as we have. Starting the year off right was the participation of the Juniors in I-Dued week. During this week well over half ofthe Juniors paid their dues. Many Juniors attended the Harvest Ball and the Christmas Formal. The queen candidate of the Junior Class for the Harvest Ball was Jerrene Tomkinson. The Junior Class's candidate, Janet Sales, was chosen Tip-Off Queen. Rings, this seemed to be the talk of the Junior Class 'For about a week. Eeny-meeny-miny- moe, the American Beauty , was selected to be the ring for the graduating class of '66. We took part in the annual Hal- loween food drive and class assembly. The Junior Class is honored to have Kitty Conner, Polly Ambrose, and Teresa Mitch- ell as varsity cheerleaders. The Junior Class has succeeded in making this year a big success at M.H.S., and we plan to make our Senior year the best ever. Lee Abbott Linda Allford Polly Ambrose Gwen Bass Gary Bass . Meridian faced a very tough schedule this year. The SRV-A Conference always pro- vides top competition. Usually there are one or two outstanding teams in the league, but as we write this article every team seems to be having a good season. Emmett, always a good team, is picked to be the winner, however, Meridian, as well as other teams, are working toward upsetting them. This year the team, for the second year in a row, made a trip to Twin Falls where they played Jerome and Twin Falls. Many of the students made the trip also. As we go to press, the team has an over-all record of six wins and six losses. The Warrior's conference record is four wins and two losses, placing them in second place. The M-Club has changed very much this year. This year the school adopted a new constitution and a new set of attendance and membership rules. To add a little color and zest to our school athletic club we voted that girl lettermen could be members and hold office. The M-Club queen candidate, Barbara Green, won Home- coming honors. To aid the coaches in their iob the M-Club has bought a new screen and proiector. The M-Club has been very beneficial in boosting school spirit. lt spon- sored a Warrior Day during football. For the basketball season a cheering section composed of M-Club members was organized. Also M-Club was in charge of the bas- ketball intramurals during noon. The M-Club has been a big success this year under the direction of Mr. Charlton, our adviser. 1 XXX ,I ' K4 35 W fy fly MAX - ,lf ,W N . XX. 'X XV! , X Y V4, A 1 Il Xia: In N. lf? XXV? MANA HA QA STAFF The forty-nine member Mana Ha Sa staff has spent a great deal of time on the annual this year. Some of the iobs which must be done to make the yearbook complete are: taking pictures, selling annuals, selling advertisements, typing copy, drawing layouts, and writing stories. On September 20, Wanda Bolen, Corinne Ostroot, Craig Shipley, Wren Harris, and Mrs. White attended a yearbook workshop at Idaho State University. lt was very interesting and suggested several new methods to be applied to yearbooks. The staff worked together to produce a new and quite different yearbook. For the first time in several years the book has a hard back instead of a padded one. ln the Spring the students waited impatiently to receive their i965 Mana Ha Sa. At last the day ar- rived. Everyone spent the day signing books, some sitting on the floor, others standing, some sitting on chairs, some sitting on each other, but all madly autographing their friends' land sometimes by mis- take their ownl books. WAR WHODP STAFF This year the Meridian Warwhoop Staff has put forth a special effort to get an all-American rating from the University of Minnesota. The paper has had a First-Class rating in past years. Members of the staff attended many conferences and clinics to enable them to make a better paper for the school. Ginger Hansel, editor-in-chief, and Judy Gibson, associate editor, took a master course in iournalisrn at the University of Idaho in Moscow during the summer to help in improving the paper. Four of the editors-Patty Wood, Ginger Hansel, JoAnne Hansen, and Hal Rossow-attended the Idaho State High School Press Association annual fall con- ference in Pocatello. The Warwhoop staff started out the year by holding an all day workshop for area school publications. The staff has tried to publish stories which are of interest to the student body. They include school, community, and national news stories. Their adviser, Miss Elizabeth R. Williams, has been an appreciated guiding hand during the year. The delegates are chosen by the faculty advisory committee according to the student's scholarship, leader- ship, personality, and participation in extra- curricular activities. Attending the 1964 Gem Boys' State at Boise Junior College, June 7-14, were Mike Mikesell, James Scott, John Dewey, and Craig Brown. Mike was chosen Treasurer of Warren's City and State Senator from Nez Perce County, James was chosen State Representative from Nez Perce County, John was chosen State Representative from Alturas County and Chair- man of the House Highway Committee, and Craig Nwas chosen State Representative from Shoshone County. Each delegate enioyed the course thoroughly and learned much about the functions of the city, state, and national government. It was not all study, however, as there were recreational activities to participate in and many opportuni- ties to meet new friends. These boys are to be commended for their fine accomplishments. Lp. , GIRLS' STATE During the past summer three MHS girls-Melodie Hoffbauer, Connie Rupp, and Janice Mittleider- attended Girls' State, one of the greatest honors given to any high school girl. Melodie, Connie, and Janice were among the 243 Girls' Staters from all parts of ldaho who spent the week ot May 31 to June 6 on the College of Idaho campus. The girls spent this exciting week learning about government on the city, county, and state levels, cam- paigning for offices, competing between the Federalist and Nationalist parties, and legislating at the Capitol Building. Melodie was a member of Nationalist Party, and Connie and Janice were both Federalists. Janice was a citizen of Wolverine City, Melodie lived in Deer City, Connie's residence was in Antelope City. As legislators, Janice and Connie served in the House of Representa- tives while Melodie was in the Senate. All three girls heartily agreed that their week at Girls' State was one of the brightest highlights of their high school career. The Declamation group is composed of two parts. The Debate Department takes charge of the forensic nament at Boise High School for competition in debate and declamation.
