THE PRI CIPAL7 MESSAC To the Class of 1960: World-shaking events are the order of the day. A wave of nationalism is sweeping over many quarters of the earth. A struggle is on, greater than ever known before, for the control of the minds of men. America stands as the greatest power in the world today dedicated to the task of preserving human dignity, or keeping men free, and of promoting a trust in God. Well-respected writers and observers of world events say that the emerging decade will be a decisive one in many respects concerning the future of civilization. The majority of you are moving out upon the threshhold of this decade into employment, while some of you will enter the armed forces and others will go on to institutions of higher learning. In view of word events, it seems to me that all of us have a responsibility deeper than ever before to support and promote in any way we can the great fundamental ideals and principles upon which our democracy is founded. How you will employ your talents to implement these great principles, what use you will make of the skills and knowledges you have acquired, how seriously you will take your responsibility of keeping a breast of world events are some of the questions that I would like you to reflect upon. The answer must be made by you as individuals. Obviously America needs to retain its good influences and powerful leadership in the world if men are to remain free. We need to recognize more and more our moral and spiritual re- sponsibilities as individuals in the light of our national heritage. Great leaders of today are reminding us of our inability to cope with the problems facing all of us apart from an abiding faith in God. If this be true, we need to take a good look at ourselves. We need to rededicate our lives and fortunes in a deeper senseg we need to take our eyes more off pleasure and ease, and learn anew the meaning of personal sacrihce. Our great national resources and scientific advancements tend to cloud our vision and cause us to forget that it is not by might but by My Spirit, saith the Lord. As you leave Mergenthaler, the future lies before you. XVhat it holds no man can say, but as you leave always keep in mind the precept and the guide that I have occasionally brought to your attention, namely, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to thine own understanding, In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths. Congratulations and best wishes to each of you. Sincerely yours, Howard E. Ziefle Principal
