In Memoriam BONNIE SURRATT Bonnie, with her quiet unassuming per- sonality, shall long be remembered at M -C H. S. All the students and faculty were greatly saddened by her sudden death from an illness of only four days. July 1. 1951 - September 30. 1969 SENIORS WHO’S WHO SUSAN KING was chosen to receive the DAR Award for the year 1968-69. She was chosen on the following basis: Patriotism, dependability, leadership, service, and citizenship. Among the many awards given to students, The Outstanding Teenager of America award was given to three students at our school this year: Kathy Allen, Allen Chrisman, and Jack Howell. RODGER HANNEL was selected to attend Boys' State held at the State Fair grounds in the summer of 1968. His selection was based on loyalty, leadership, and scholarship. COLETTE BOGUE was selected to attend Girls' State held at MacMurray College in the summer of 1968. Her selection was based on loyalty, lead- ership, and scholarship. BETTY STAAKE was named Homemaker of Tomorrow by receiving the highest score on the Betty Crocker test given on December 3, 1968. Helen Hughes, Secretary Jack Howell, Corky Lemmon, President Rodger Hannel, Vice President Linda Lovekamp, Treasurer JACK EUGENE HOWELL July 20, 1951 - February 18, 1969 JACKSON Pet Peeve: Mo-Ped Basketball, 3; Football, 1, 3, 4; Baseball, 1, 2, 3; Track, 1; All School Play, 3; Class Officer, 4; Jr-Sr Play, 3 RUSSELL BROWN RUSS Pet Peeve: Sitting in geometry and listening to corny jokes if 1X1 Jack had the quiet dignity to be a person of consistent, sincere accomplishment. His Class of 1969 has unanimously voted to award, in his memory, the first annual 'Jack Howell Memorial Athletic Award. The award requires participation in three major sports and Jack was outstanding in baseball and football and also had participated in basket- ball. Jack fully possessed the other stipulations of the award: high character, co-operative personality, inspiring leadership, and high academic achievement. Asa sophomore. Jack led the M-C H. S. baseball team in batting average. He was a leading hitter during his junior year. In football he was regularly a top blocker-tackier. Despite his illness during the first semester of his senior year. Jack maintained consistent interest and support of the teams and he put forth high academic accomplishment de- spite 52 days of absence during the semester. He was also named as an Outstanding Teenager of America by the faculty. We salute Jack. We dedicate many of our higher efforts to him. MISS MARY ANN SCHULTE is Year- book Advisor and Co-Advisor of the Sophomore Class. She teaches Shorthand, Clerical Office Practice, Typing I, Typing II, and Bookkeeping MRS. MYRTLE JOY IS F. H. A. Advisor, and Co-Advisor of the Senior Class. She teaches Home Ec III, Home Ec I. Home Ec IV, Home Ec II, and Jr. High Home Ec. Q MR. NORMAN DEMING is Co-Advisor of the Science Club and Co-Advisor of the Junior Class. He teaches Biology, Chemistry, General Science, and Al- gebra I. MR. KENNETH DEFRATES is the Li- brarian and Co-Advisor of the Senior Class. He teaches American History, English Ia, English III, and World History. MR. ROBERT RIGGLE is the Coun- seling and Guidance Director, and Director of Dramatics. He teaches English IV, Speech and Composition, and Civics. MR. RICHARD JAMES is Co-Advisor of the Freshman Class and Instructor in the Building Trades Program. This year Bluffs High School is also participating in the program. MR. JAMES HENDERSON is Co-Advisor of the Science Club and Co-Advisor of the Sophomore Class. He teaches Algebra I, Geometry. Algebra II, Math IV, and Physics. k A MISS DOROTHY MAAG joined the faculty after Christmas to assume Mrs. Morton's duties. MRS. GEORGENA MORTON was GAA Advisor and Co-Advisor of the Junior Class. She taught all the Grade P. E. classes, and Jr. High and High School Girls' P.E. MR. PRYOR BENTLEY is Jr. High and Sr. High Band and Chorus Direc- tor and also gives individual lessons the rest of the day, with additional time taken to prepare for contests and concerts. MR. TERRY WILSON is Head Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track Coach. He teaches Drivers' Education, American Problems, and High School Boys' P.E. MISS LILLIAN HESS is the Student Council Advisor, Co-Advisor of the Freshman Class, and Assistant Director of Dramatics. She teaches English IIfc , German II. English 1 , English na, and German I. ALL SCHOOL PLAY The Man Who Came to Dinner was the second all school play presented at MCHS Broken hips, broken hearts, notorious convicts, and famous actresses contributed to the subtle humor of this Broadway play. This fall the Juniors and Seniors gave a double performance on the new MCHS stage. The House Three young girls and their teacher, stranded on a mysterious island with a haunted house, become the victims of three escaped convicts. JUNIOR-SENIOR PLAYS 39 PARADISE BY NIGHT The Junior-Senior Prom was held on April 27, 1968, at the Dunlap Motor Inn in Jacksonville. The music was featured by the Top Brass which mystified everyone from 9:00 till the last stroke of midnight. LOOK! A small eruption took place about the middle of September with the awakening of the minds to the possibility of a Homecoming Victory. Each class, along with school and town organizations began pre- paring for the annual event. Floats, depicting victory, wound their way through the town, hoping their theme would win the prize. The Freshmen class took 1st place followed by the Sophomore class, and the Juniors. Miss Teresa Caldwell, escorted by Dan Little, was chosen by the student body as the 1968 Homecoming queen. Miss Vickie Gobel and Miss Susan King, escorted by Corky Lemmon and Bruce Dawson, were runners up. The Underclassmen attendants were: Chardy Walker, escorted by Gary Staake; Connie Allen, escorted by Ron Summers; and Cheryl Lovelace, escorted by Allen Chrisman. The science project, The Effect Morning- Glory Seed Solution on Paramecium, was exhibited by Colette Bogue and Joan Breckon at the following Science Fairs: MCHS Local, Jacksonville District, and U of.I State. The girls received a First-Select at M-C and the district, and a First at the State Science Fair Illinois Junior Academy of Science 56 Gary Irvin, Kirk Browning, and Gary Gregory made a computer controlled vehicle, which they exhibited at the Local, District, and State Science Fairs They placed second in the State Paper Session among eight other papers in Physics. They were also awarded a First at the Auditorium at the U of I at Champaign. One of the activities of the MCHS Flag Guard was a Veteran's Day Program on November 8, 1968. Mike Hegener performed the Call to Colors. followed by the Reverend Alfred Schlorke, who offered the invocation. Bruce Dawson acted as Emcee throughout the program. The high school chorus sang 'Oh Shenandoah'' and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Allen Chrisman gave a reading. The American Flag.
