O X 2 o MR. CHEL YOUNG Principal Superintendent PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE The students and faculty of Meredosia- Chambersburg High School should reflect on the past years with a feeling of great pride in the accomplishments that were made. The past year has seen the fruition of many months' planning by the Board of Education in the expansion of the high school building. This should enable our school to broaden educational offerings and thus give an enriched program. HOWARD SAVOIE Science Senior Advisor Assistant Principal Our student council has been active in promoting student welfare with the acquisition of such items as a PA system, water coolers, and increased recreational equipment. Our student group is to be praised for the increasing number who make one of the various honor rolls and for the increasing number who plan to further their education beyond high school. We are headed in the right direction. Our athletic squads are to be commended for the improved attitude shown and their willingness to go all out in order to make a creditable showing. To the members of this year's class I extend, on behalf of the Board of Education and of the Faculty, best wished and hope for success in your future undertakings. Your careers will be followed with great interest Chel Young PEGGY CHAPMAN Girls' Physical Education - FRANCIS PANKEY Band Chorus CHARLES RUEB Agriculture Junior Advisor MRS. As we begin our trip, we see Mardell McDaniel, husband, and twelve little beach combers basking in the sun at Miami Beach. After flying around the Gulf of Mexico, we see the Rancho Grande of Marilyn Schneider. Standing in the midst of her yellow rose garden, she greets us with a hearty Hi Ya'll. Upon entering Oklahoma, a swift rush of air greets us as Rex Tracy whizzes by in his jet propelled plane counting his oil wells to pass the time of day. As we go to Arizona, we find Sandra Little training her cobras to do the Cha-Cha ? Her favorite snake, a giant Boa Constrictor, looks curiously at us as we pass by. Upon entering California, we see Judy Hobson on location making her new picture entitled, The Lieutenant wore Garters. Flying leisurely onward, we suddenly enter a thick cloud of smoke. Thinking it to be smog, we descent to a lower level and find that it is only Curtiss Muntman smoking a ten foot cigar. As we fly along the coast of California, we see Marcella Gregory Floyd and the little Louies I, II, III, surf-board riding behind their huge yacht. Passing the yacht, we fly onward to Hawaii and are entertained by Harriett Thompson and her school of hula dancers. Our time is limited, so we hurry onward to Japan only to find the 17 largest circus in the world which specializes in the performance of fleas, under the direction of Jo Ellen Steinberg. As dusk falls, we find ourselves in China where we are greeted by the tantalizing smell of Chop Suey from Fonda Petri's Night Club in the Aristocratic section of Singapore. We cannot leave Europe without stopping in Gay Pari. Here we see Betty Lou Allen Dior, designing faboulous clothes for the Cor- onation of the Queen of France. Flying on to Italy, we see a beautiful house on the Mediterranean. To our surprise, Vera Kay Fricke lounges on the veranda, and she waves to us as we pass over. Onward we soar on the fulttering folds of our magic carpet toward the vast jungles of Africa. Whom do we see? Tarzan? No! It is none other than Du Wayne Rausch and his trusty guide. Tucker Ruyle. We find them enjoying a hearty meal of bananas and coconut juice. Thinking it isn't safe to hang around, we meander over to Arabia; and, as we look groundward, whom do we see but Warren Dickman being entertained by his beautiful harem. Once more upon our merry way, we travel for a short period and soon arrive in Australia. We see a hopping herd of kangaroos being rapidly pursued by Norma Workman, The Kangaroo Heiress , driving the herd to a nearby water hole. While still in the hopping mood, we jump right over to South America and stop to see the annual Fiesta and the ensuing Bull Fights. Charles Allen takes top honors as the Brancho of Bull Patch ? Embarking once more upon our journey, we glide leisurely around Cape Horn and direct our magic carpet toward Alaska, the Land of the Northern Lights. Here we find Darold VanHyning and Ed Scheer employed at the largest artificial icycle plant in the world. Shouting mush , we quickly depart from this land of snow and ice into Canada which 18 proves to slightly warmer. Here we see a long column of red-coated mounties led by none other than General George Allen. Our magic fuel almost exhausted, we turn again to the U. S. A. As we come in view of the Statue of Liberty, we see the familiar face of Rita Petri busily polishing the torch of this famed statue while studying her play part for the South Atlantic . Suddenly a silver streak whizzes by; and, as we look into the cockpit, we see none other than Professor Doris Potter taking her second trip to the moon. From this point of view it seems that the old class of 1956 has been successful in gaining fame and fortune for themselves throughout the world. Everyone is looking forward to a reunion in the near future. Without further adieu, we hereby declare the Class of 1956 officially exiled from the Meredosia-Chambersburg High School until the year of 2000 , when they will again be reunited for a formal dinner to be sponsored by John D. Rockefeller III. By Doris Potter Marilyn Schneider Vera Kay Fricke Meredosia Nation Wide Store Bradley Implement Co. 19 Meredosia, Illinois Meredosia, Illinois C LASS W I L L We, the Seniors of M. C. H. S. being of half sound mind and body do declare on this twenty-fifth day of May, nineteen hundred and fifty-six, that the following is a true and correct copy of our last will and testimony. We, the Seniors, will to the faculty our regular habits, punct- uality, and the excuses we are so good about bringing from home. To the Juniors, we will our ability to hold quiet class meetings and all our Senior dignity. To the Sophomores, we will our ability to hold long arguements that never get us anywhere, and our extreme quietness in the halls. To the Freshmen, we will our fondness for cokes and candy bars, and our skill for hitting the waste basket with our chewing gum. I, Betty Lou Allen, leave my volleyball ability to Bonnie Edlen. I, Charles Allen, leave my hot-rod ability to Ronnie Potter. I, George Allen, leave my ability to sleep in classes and get by with it to Ronnie Potter. I, Warren Dickman, leave my basketball technique to Ronnie Ellett. I, Vera Kay Fricke, will all the sour notes in chorus to Mary Jean Steinberg. 1, Marcella Gregory, will my ability to argue to Rebecca VanDeventer. I, Judy Hobson, will all the gum wrappers from Democracy class to Mark Unland and Mr. Major. I, Sandra Little, leave all the cob webs in the corners to Spider (Mary) Gregory. I, Curtiss Muntman, leave my membership card in the alcoholic anonymous club to Jim Rausch. I, Mardell McDaniel, will nothing. I need everything I have. I, Jo Ellen Steinberg, will my ability to get along with Miss Chapman to Alice Barbier, who might need it next year. I, Norma Jean Workman, will my bashfullness (which I haven't) to Alice Barbier. 1, Darold VanHyning, leave my ability in football to David Hawkshaw. E. F. That is what might have been heard from some of the Freshmen students in September, 1952, when they all came back to school to start their high school career. High School meant settling down, working hard, and trying their best to act like, or rather be, ladies and gentlemen. If you had looked this group over well, you would have found thirty-three Freshmen enrolled. They were Betty Allen, Charles Allen, George Allen, Marilyn Allen, John Barfield, Norma Dale, James Myers, Fonda Petri, Rita Petri, Bobby Dawson, Delbert VanHyning, Darold VanHyning, Stella McDannald, Marcella Gregory, Sandra Little, Doris Potter, Mardell McDaniel, John Ruyle, Rex Tracy, Jo Ellen Steinberg, Norma Workman, Vera Kay Fricke, Judy Hobson, Marilyn Schneider, Warren Dickman, Du Wayne Rausch, Roland Ransom, Billy Nunn, Curtis Muntman, Virginia Miller, and Donald Hannel. During the year of 1952, Chambersburg High School combined with Meredosia High School to form Unit II. Due to the combining of the two schools, we gained two more pupils, Harriett Thompson and Virginia Sims. During our Freshmen year, we lost five students. Marilyn Allen, John Barfield, Virginia Miller, Billy Nunn, and Roland Ransom. At the beginning of our Sophomore year, twenty-eight students registered. The end of the Sophomore year found us with a total of 22 twenty-four students, having lost Norma Dale, Stella McDannold, James Meyers Donald Hannel, and Bobby Dawson. We pained one new student, L icille Kennedy. The Junior year found us half way through high school. Out of the twenty-three students enrolled in September, two did not finish. They were Virginia Sims, and Delbert VanHyning. Lucille Kennedy did not return to school after summer vacation. Edwin Scheer also joined us that year. On August 29, 1955, twenty-two Seniors embarked on the last step of their twelve-year journey. During our Senior year, only one student, Fonda Petri, did not finish. Out of thirty-three students enrolled in 1952, a graduating class of twenty-one remains. Hill's Radio TV Phone 1890 Jacksonville, Illinois Hopper Ham Furniture Co. Our football team, although largely inexperienced underclassmen, did not live up to my expectations. Injuries to some of our key players had a lot to do with our poor showing. Our football record was one win and five losses. Senior lettermen were DuWayne Rausch, Rex Tracy, John Ruyle, Ed Scheer, and Darry VanHyning. In basketball we weren't expected to do very good, but we ended with a respectable season. Our record was twelve wins and twelve losses. The loss of George Allen early in the season hurt us tremendously. The only other senior on the squad was Warren Dickman, so the prospects for next years team look bright. Our baseball season is now half over. Our record to date is two wins and four losses. Our chances are good to end with a . 500 season. Seniors playing on the baseball team are Ed Scheer, Rex Tracy, DuWayne Rausch, John Ruyle, and Darry VanHyning. We have tried to teach in our athletic program the idea of sports- manship as well as the desire to win. We wish the best of luck to the graduating athletes and hope that they can continue their athletic careers in some college or university. 34 FOOTBALL Back Row: Warren Dickman, Mgr., Bill Likes, Mark Unland, Jim Rausch, Ted Clark, Archie Hunter, Larry Edlen, Darrell McDannold, David Hawkshaw, Ray Wilhite, and Coach Cooper. f ront Row: Parry Vanilyning, Richard Seymour, Ed.
