Upon entering Meredosia High School in 1949 twenty-seven students answered the roll as “Green Freshmen.' The twenty-seven included: Donald Allen, Kenneth Browning, Virginia Dawson, Wayne Dickman, Bob Duvendack, Shirley Edwards, Yvonne Floyd, Donna Hobson, Billy Hulett, Glenn Janes, Marcia Koopman, Bonita Lewis, James McDaniel, John Miller, Marion Perry, Janice Pond, Jean Schneider, Norma Jean Simmons, Doris Smith, Erna Lee Staake, Gwendolyn Tegeder, Donna Mae Watkins, Barbara Yeakel, Layton Yeakel, and Paul Winkleman. In our Freshman year we were fortunate to have all our classmates with us, although Marion Perry moved to Chambersburg during the last half of the year. In 1950 we returned to school in September and when count was taken we still had all our classmates. Janice Pond decided she was tired of the old grind every day so she quit in the middle of the year. Paul Winkleman moved away during school time, so we lost two classmates during our Sophomore year.

Class of ’53 in the Future I am the spirit of 53 and the class has asked me to go into the future to see what they will be doing. We shall start near Meredosia. Looking to the North you see many herds of cattle grazing on thousands of green acres. This is the V-8 Bar owned by Billy Hulett. Slightly to the right you will see the V-8 Bar’s Research Farm and Laboratory which is headed by Bob Duvendack. Barbara Yeakel Ham is teaching second grade in the local grade school, while Virginia Dawson Simon is teaching Home Economics in the high school. Glenn Janes is chief machinist at the CIPS plant and is about to be promoted to a position at one of the new plants in Pisgah. But, most of the class is gone from the old stomping grounds so let’s move on to Chicago. Dixie Griebler, ace reporter for the Chicago Moon, has just cracked a nationwide ring of gangsters. Donna Hobson is head nurse of the Mercy Hospital, where Dr. Shirley Heitbrink is Chief of Staff. At Speedy Typewriter Inc., Jean Schneider has just been unanimously elected president of the company by the Board of Directors. Shirley Edwards has been recently hired by the same company to make movies on “The Correct Way To Type as she is now World’s Champion Typist. In the next block, where Marshall-Field once stood, is the Crystal Dome Roller Rink owned by Donald “Red Allen. Red decided to build this glass-roofed skating rink when he first became a floor manager. Before we leave Chicago, we must not forget to mention Wayne “Pooch Dickman, who is foreman of pipe insulators at the Snodgrass Company. But right now we can’t see him because he’s in a pipe In Champaign at the U. of 111., where Layton “Tub Yeakel is head coach of.foQtbaLLuhis team has won every game. Looks like another Rose Bowl Year for Tub. We arrive now in New York a little breathless from our journey so, let’s rest stop at the Rockefeller Bulding, where Doris Smith is chief accountant for the Empire Shoe- string Co. Incidentally, Gwendolyn Tegeder’s offices are in this building. She is national president of all Women’s Athletic Assiciations. Down the street is the Jonesonian Institute, where John Miller is an archeologist. His secretary, Yvonne Floyd, is handling his affairs now, as he is on an expedition to the North Pole. Norma Jean Simmons, Academy Award winner, is currently starring in the musical film hit, “My Favorite Grandmother. Erna J ee Staake’s new book on shorthand methods has revolutionized the teaching world, as well as the business world. Marion Perry, a top engineer, has just completed a bridge across Devil’s Pass in California. Galen Pool, now a pro football player, has been voted “Man of the Year by The Sports Writers of America. James McDaniel is a 4-star Air Force general in charge of the jet divisions in Alaska. Harlan Fuelling is private secretary for the Ambassador to Bolivia. Gary Perry is now a famous world news reporter traveling all over the world gathering material for his news-casts. That’s all folks. See you at the class reunion in 1966 to compare notes. 17

When we became up-and-coming Juniors in 1951 we found Donna Watkins and Bonita Lewis were not with us anymore. Donna moved and Bonita got in the way of Cupid’s arrow. During our Junior year we presented the play “Best Seller.” We were kept on our toes with the annual banquet and dance along with our studies. The theme for our banquet and dance was “Apple Blossom Time.” We received our class rings shortly before Christmas. Everyone was well pleased with them. Our Senior year twenty-three answered to the roll call. We found we had two new members in our class, Galen Pool and Marion Perry. In our Senior year we presented the play “Feudin Over Yonder” with every member of the class in it. The second semester of our last year at M. H. S. we found we had a new classmate, Gary Perry. We now had twenty-four members in our class. We went to Kirkwood Lodge for our Senior class trip. At the end of the school year we shall regret that it is our last year at M. H. S. and we will never forget the good time we had. 1
